Little Brother's Latest Strategy to Raise Spring Game Attendance

  • Little brother's latest strategy to entice their "line bearded" fan base to their spring game. An interesting combo of kids activities and $1 beer. I guess you call that "knowing your audience". UK's 33,000 pre-sold tix to our spring game must have worried them into this desperate move.

The 2013 University of Louisville Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Spring Game, is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. in Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. (Same date/time as UK's spring football game).

Pre-game festivities will be in Streetfest where there will be music, entertainment, food and drink specials; including $1 beer. The $1 beer offer will extend into the stadium, throughout the game. There will also be inflatables for kids as well as Spring Game posters available to the fans for a $1.00 donation to Wendy’s Wonderful kids.

  • Kentucky fans have forever griped about UK not doing something - anything - to promote the spring game or boost attendance. Not sure you can now make fun of Louisville's attempts to do the same. (Well, I'm sure you CAN because that's what the rivalry entails, just not sure it's all that different biggrinshrug)

Speaking of beer, is there a loophole in the SEC no alcohol policy where UK could sell beer at the spring game, since it technically isn't an SEC vs SEC contest? I'm sure that beer would attract a few more fans out to the game.

Also, isn't it about time for the SEC to revisit the no alcohol policy? I mean, what does it really say that SEC fans are the only ones incapable of consuming alcohol responsibly? It's not like there aren't already drunk people at the game anyway. Would there really be that many more problems if people had 3 or 4 more beers over a 3 hour period? It could even be argued that the type of drinkers that the no alcohol policy is targeted at actually creates drunker fans inside the stadium, because those people load up in the parking lot before going in. It also causes people to sneak hard liquor into the stadium and to drink it all before they leave. As far as I know they sell beer at every other sporting event in the nation. I think they even sell beer at all the high school games. Prohibition is just as ineffective today as it ever was.

  • My idea for years to increase the attendance at the UK spring game involved actually charging $10 to get in the gate.

I propose getting Mitch Barnhart to approach one of the Big Blue donors like Paul Miller Ford about providing a UK custom van or truck with all the bells and whistles to be raffled off. I don’t know what the vehicle would cost, say $50-$60K, but the $10 admission for 20,000+ fans would more than cover the expense.

I go to the game regardless, but I know of a lot of other people who would pay the $10 for the chance to win a wonderful prize like that.

NOTE: Must be present to claim the prize.

Sounds like a lot of fun! Selling tickets to the game, basically for free, does not guarantte that many butts in the stands. It just gives the UK marketing team something to sell to the fan base.
