  • "The Mailman" Sam Malone delivers again! Really nifty move there to get to the rim.

Being called a sprain. Very encouraging sign that he's back on the bench IMO.

  • I don't like how our two bigs aren't rebounding very high numbers

    4 by noel
    4 by WCS

Goodwin seems to be our best rebounder...with 6.

    Wiltjer worries me...

Poythress is going to get a lot of yelling..

  • Last year's scores, btw.

    Transy 1st: 23 2nd: 30 Final: 53
    Kentucky 1st: 37 2nd: 60 Final: 97 (Win by 44)

    This year

    Transy: 1st: 18 2nd: 10 Final 28
    Kentucky: 1st: 27 2nd: 47 Final 74 (Win by 46)

Let the unfair comparison to 2011-2012 team begin! :-D

  • Postgame presser notes:

    TRANSY COACH BRIAN LANE:

** 'When I heard they had been working on toughness I knew we were in trouble. We handled the pressure early, but defensively they're just going to get better and better and better.'

** 'Last year, we got off over 35-36 three-pointers. That's how we could stay in game. This year we couldn't get them off. They close so well. If one guy makes a mistake the next guy is there.'

** 'I saw them work out twice in preseason before practice and you could really see the potential. I was at those workouts and seen them practice, if you think they just recruit good players and roll out the ball, you're crazy. Those guys coach. Coach Cal is always instructing.'

  • MORE LANE:

** 'When they defend the three and make threes like they did tonight, they're going to be tough. When Julius came off that screen and hit a three (an assistant) leaned over and said, 'We have nothing to stop that.' I said, 'That's the most brilliant statement I've heard all night.'

  • JOHN CALIPARI

** We're still learning about ourselves. I thought we defended better. If one or two guys break down you can't play defense. It becomes demoralizing. I like how we started the half and flew around.'

    ** 'We're a November 5th team. It's going to be a process.'

** 'At the end I liked the fact we had 14 turnovers but we had 10 at halftime.'

**On Mays, 'I think he's fine. They knocked knees. He played good. Steady. Talks. Not afraid to lead a little.'

  • MORE CAL

** 'In the first half Archie was awful. In the second half he was great, but in the first half he was awful. That's what freshmen do.'

** 'Ryan was alright, but still didn't have enough energy. He's getting better, it's just a process.'

** 'We've got two tough games coming up. Neither one are you just going to throw the ball in the post and score. They're too good.'

** '15 to 18 teams this season will try to beat us at the three-point line. We're pretty good defending that.'

  • ** Cal says he thinks the rest of the players 'really respect' Julius Mays. Emerging as their leader.

** On Noel: 'I want him to be a basketball player who happens to block shots. I don't want him to be a shot blocker.'

  • Your game quotes Matt are exactly why I'm extremely confident about this team. I realize they aren't last year's team. I know a team like that doesn't come often. But with the state of CB this year and the talent and potential of this team I'm excited.

It was an exhibition game sure, but Cal got a point across at halftime. You play defense you win games. They'll catch on quicker than some think.

  • Oh, another thing that needs to happen more (which it will) is Goodwin getting to the line more. I thought on at least two occasions that he was fouled. He needs to shoot six to eight foul shots a game. Like Lamb, he's too good of a free throw shooter not to. Plus, Goodwin is a ferocious driver. I wonder if Cal's desire to convert him into a PG had something to do with his play tonight. Regardless, I'm not worried about Archie b/c I believe him to be our best player.

    Side Notes:
Cal really needs to figure out the switch to turn Poythress on. Once he does we will have Zeus himself playing ball for us.

Noel might end up with the best FG% in the country.

Once defense clicks with this team nobody will want to play us. You have a lockdown perimeter defender in Goodwin and the Twin Towers, plus AP once he gets it. Harrow and Mays can be solid too.

Last years team you could see what was coming very early. This year I see it, but it will take longer than last year. That is the virtue of having second year Lamb & Jones and senior Miller. The sooner Mays excepts a leadership role the sooner this team takes off. It would be nice to have a freshman follow his lead.

Wiltjer absolutely cannot shoot 2-8. This was a combination of being put in a position to take bad shots and just not playing within the offense. This team needs him to make at the very least one trey and shoot around 50%. He may not be the best defender, but he's crafty around the basket and should be used more around there.

Starting five at the moment: Goodwin, Mays, AP, Noel, WCS.

  • man...

we played helluva a lot better than i thought. LOL,

I REALLY like this team. But i am not going to say anything till we play some DI team, but that was some impressive showing, if you ask me.

BTW...Wiltjer didn't get blown by by anyone during the game. He missed the shots he usually makes. Not sure why people would be down on him. He played well, he defended well...

People won't like this but WCS got scored on the most, actually it's not even close. He got about 15 points scored on him, which is interesting because he played REALLY well too.
