  • Frank Martin to South Carolina. I think he'd be great for the league and a great hire by SC but am I the only one puzzled by this??

As Shaka Smart has shown, patience can go a long way. Just think it's a bad move.

  • Hope
He can strengthen SEC. Sick of the bad rep.

And maybe he likes football a lot. Lol

  • I can't speak well enough to K State to know for sure. I'm just not a Big 12 fan. He's done a nice job out there. I thought they'd fall off the map once Beasley left.

You just have to wonder what Shaka is waiting on? Dude seems to have the personality and style to recruit the Chicago kids. I get that OSU, Sparty and now Michigan seem to be rolling but you can win at Illinois.

yeah, thought he was tailor made for the Illinois job. Was really surprised he turned it down.

  • Bad move IMHO. We'll see how this works out but IMO Martin had a good thing going at KSU and I just don't see USC as move up.

  • Not a bad move. Its a horrible move if it happens. Just stupid. At the same time I'm hoping he does come to the SEC. Not sure if he can be successful but we'll see.

  • I agree Chris..totally puzzled with this move..Complete step down..Would love to know what he is thinking..

I don't see why people are calling it a step down. Lateral move, perhaps, but it's not a step down. The SEC is going to be just as good (or better) as the Big 12 with the addition of Mizzou and A&M. The TV contract is better. The facilities are better. The recruiting base is better.

See I look at it a little differently.

USC is an SEC program located in the heart of ACC country and it's not even the premier program (Clemson) in its own state. Hard to recruit to.

Just hard to win there. Eddie Fogler couldn't win there, consistently anyway, and he was able to win at Vanderbilt.

I don't think it's all that hard to recruit to. I just think they haven't had the right guy to do it. I'm not completely convinced that Frank Martin is that guy, but if you can recruit people to Manhattan, Kansas, you should be able to recruit people to South Carolina.

  • I don't think it is so strange. USC is not one of the premier programs in the SEC, but K-State isn't one of the better situations in the Big-12 either. It's a lateral move, except that it shows that Martin regards the SEC as the better basketball conference, going forward. With Missouri and Texas A&M coming in (esp. MO), I agree. USC also reportedly offered him quite a bit more $ than he is currently making, and he supposedly has had some disagreements with the K-State AD. Hope it happens. Always glad to see the SEC add good coaches or players.

  • South Carolina used to be basketball school. They were once in the ACC, if you remember, and had some pretty good teams. I can see the appeal. I'm sure Columbia is much nicer than Manhattan, KS too.

  • Why not Illinois or Miss St? Surely both schools would be interested in Frank Martin.

  • Being reported Martin will be introduced as SC's coach tomorrow, 6 years $12 MIL deal.

  • This is a completely horrible move. Huge step down. If you claim SEC is sexier because of the addition of Mizzou and A&M, that is just going to make it that much harder to win at USC. Frank Martin will not last there. South Carolina has zero tradition and K-State is at least relevant in college bball talks.

Kansas State= 25 tournament appearances- 32 Tournament wins
South Carolina= 8 tournament appearances- 4 tournament wins

    NO COMPARISON

Yep. The word is K-State did very little to try and keep Martin around. Never saw eye to eye with the administration.

Well in that case I can see why Frank Martin left.

I'm certain that Manhattan, Kan. is no Columbia, S.C. Also closer to Martin's native south Florida. Money's not bad either.
