MSU billboard found in violation of NCAA rules

  • * Just thought this was an interesting story, given the stuff that's gone on between UK and UofL with billboards.

Some MSU billboards violated NCAA rules

Mississippi State’s billboard foray into Oxford ended in an NCAA violation after all.

  • Glad ours don't have any recruiting type messages to them...

  • Interesting....

I guess NC State's billboard is ok to.

  • I think it's awesome. Kudos to the ADs that have the balls to do it.

  • I enjoy the back and forth. Hopefully, UK is able to get some type of national championship billboard up in Louisville.

  • The board likely would have been fine if not for the stupidity of the assistant AD for marketing stating it was a recruiting tool....

    From the OP link:

The violation was "discovered" after school officials saw media reports about the billboards, including a story in the Daily Journal quoting Chad Thomas, MSU's assistant athletics director for marketing.

In talking about the billboard campaign, Thomas said it was a recruiting tool and that the football office had input on where to put the billboards, which also appeared in Aberdeen, Biloxi, Clinton and Morton.

    up and down

That violated NCAA bylaw 13.4.3.1, which prohibits advertising or promotional material "designed to solicit the enrollment of a prospective student-athlete." All five of the "Play with the Best" billboards were taken down within a couple of weeks or so of going up.

  • Louisville had one on New Circle Road in Lexington a couple of years ago that kind of did the same thing. It had pictures of former Lexington-area HS athletes who had gone on to play for the Cards.

really don't mind that a whole lot. Some of our more popular and better players have been from Louisville. Pryor and Peters were two of them. Eastern and Central. Central was a pipeline there for a while, just wish things would have worked out with Patterson and could have stayed healthy.

  • yep, and I think that's fine Jeff. It's a way to draw more attention to your school and IS a recruiting tool to kids in your rivals area. You don't go on record and tell the world that is part of your objective though...

I believe UK has done the same thing over the years in and around Louisville with the billboards showing some UK players that were from there.

It's so ridiculous that someone saying it's a recruiting tool makes it a recruiting tool. That UL billboard was nothing but a recruiting tool. It's marketing. Of course, it's recruiting. So is paying your athletes while they are in school like the Gamecocks do (without much of a punishment).

The NCAA is a complete joke. They're lucky they have a monopoly on college sports, so they can arbitrarily decide everything and not pay the people they make millions off of every year.

It does seem to be pretty inconsistent. I don't really have much of a problem with any of these signs.
