Marquis Teague one and done?

  • Is it a foregone conclusion that he goes after his first year? I understand that he probably projects as a 1st Rd kid (I'm not sure where to find such things) but as I watch his maturation, I can't help but think that if he chose to come back, next years team could very well be "his" team. Two years under Cal and I think he would be a dominant PG, and recognized as such. Is it worth enough $$ to stay for another year to move up from the latter stages of the first round, to early picks (lottery)?

  • If I were a disinterested party, I'd have a hard time selling that to Marquis.

The real question is whether the extra year in college pumps his stock up enough to make it worthwhile to forestall his second contract for another year.

I don't know what his brother will say to him about it, but I doubt he'd push real strong for college. He is in what would be his senior year and has emerged as a very solid NBA player with a nice contract. Did his sophomore year at Wake make that happen? (and I understand that Wake is not UK and whatshisname is not Cal).

    Yeah but...

How many guys do you hear talking about they would have liked to stay? Or that maybe they would have benefyfrom more college, after they bolt?

With Jeff, it very well may be him being "big brother" and giving the whole "if I knew then..." since money is not an issue for their family. On the other hand, Jeff was kry in his choice to go to KY because of Cal, and that may have been because of the fact
Cal would help him reach the association sooner. Who knows?

But I definitely think Teague could use another year, but in the end I think he goes.

  • We'll see. That is the best answer that I can give.

Brandon Knight was not a first round pick at one point last year either.

You can say that about a few if his PGs. Rose hadn't made his bane until later in the year. Same as for BK. Those guys just kept getting better and better and by the end of conference play were the best (or top 2 or 3) PGs in college hoops. It just goes to further commend Cal's coaching ability.

What he has done with so many players in basically one year is ludicrous. I have never seen such development of talent in such a short amount of time with so many.

  • I don't see Teague coming back. People forget that to a large degree, players want to play for Cal because they want to be one and done.

Teague already has his brother in the league and the way he's playing now and the trajectory he's on, along with this draft class being relatively weak at the point guard position, I don't see him coming back. He could still potentially be a lottery pick for a team looking for a point guard.

  • He definitely needs more seasoning. However, if Cal brings in all the talent he is supposed to next year, and sharing time at point with Harrow, I don't see any difference getting more seasoning in college or in the NBA for Teague. He'll certainly play more in games in college than in the NBA, but I think he could develop his game in either place. If he leaves this year I see his path being similar to Bledsoe's.

  • I think all 5 starters are going to and need to go pro barring a major setback over the next two months; their stock will never be higher. From what I see, I would take Teague and Lamb over Jones if I am an NBA franchise.

    Davis - #1
    Gilly - Top 5
Teague and Lamb - #11-25ish based on team needs
Jones - I would not spend a lottery on him, maybe 15 to 25ish. A team that did not make the playoffs cannot afford to count on him to consistently contribute toward making the postseason, IMO. He needs to be propelled by a successful franchise where he is the worst starter or quick off the bench for his first year or two.
Miller - second round for a team that needs a competent wing off the bench.
Vargas - No Jorts feel good story, I'm afraid

  • By the way, if the Wizards hold the #1 pick and UK wins the NCAA title, I would not blame Cal a bit for going to coach the Wizards (more specifically, John Wall and Anthony Davis for the next 12 years). You know he would bring in Gilly as soon as he could make the deal, too.

  • I would think that Teague will go to the NBA just because I think he will have the support of his brother. I am not saying it would be the best situation for him in regards to being ready to step in and take over a franchise. I do not see him being a start NBA player yet. I think his situation will be a lot like Bledsoe's. I think Eric could have benefited from staying another year and becoming a starting PG for another team and not sitting behind C. Billlups(although I know C. Billlups is hurt and Bledsoe may now get his shot). And the same for Teague, I think if he stays he could increase his overally basketball IQ and get his game to the next level. But the kicker here is straight $$$$...how could you convince someone not to get paid to do what you love and especially when the money is almost guaranteed?

  • After seeing Orton go when he did, I won't be surprised at all to see any of these freshman go pro after year one - whether they have pt or no pt or based upon potential or current talent.

Hornets are getting that top pick. They could make the playoffs and still might get it. Stern picks lottery position, otherwise we would see the balls bounce.

  • He'll have a decision to make IMO. Someone is going to say he's good enough to get drafted. It will probably be toward the bottom 5-6 teams, but he'll have a shot. The big question for him is the money. If you're drafted down there, you're not going to make remotely close to what the lottery pick guys make on their rookie deal.

For example, if Teague the No. 29 pick this year, he would automatically make $883,800, $950,000 and $1,016,000 on his 3-year rookie deal. But if he came back and improved his game enough to be a, say, No. 10 selection, he would make $1,923,000, $2,067,000, and $2,212,200 on his first three years.

That's an huge difference in your initial salary, and given that nothing is guaranteed beyond your first three years in the league, that's when a lot of players make their money.

See Pitino and The Celtics for an example why he should not make an all UK NBA team.

Ewing theory... of course. Thanks for the reminder; not sure what I was thinking :)

JDrum, thanks for that info. That was the question I was trying to ask, but did so poorly. Based on this, he could clearly spend another year in school and by the end of his first year, have made the same amount of money as if he left early and was a two year pro. Yes, he would be one year closer to his second contract, but the question remains, where would he develop the best in the two years? Another year with Cal and one in the Pros, or two in the pros.

I see your reasoning, but Wall/Davis are consensus #1's only two years apart, which Pitino did not have. He had great first rounders, but nothing like Wall/Davis in terms of NBA potential. Cal going to coach the Wizards with Wall/Davis is more comparable to Dean Smith leaving in the early 80's if he had a chance to coach both James Worthy and Michael Jordan in their earliest years on the same NBA team. Not saying Wall/Davis are Worthy/Jordan, but the draft status would be similar.

Yeah I guess you're right. I just don't want him to leave. Unless this title drought continues.

Not a chance that happens. Likely you don't keep those two guys in Washington for 12 years anyway no matter who the coach is and while they would be a nice start to a franchise they'd still have a long way to go. If Cal leaves or when he leaves he'll only leave to coach the Lakers, Bulls, Celtics, Heat or somewhere like that. A place that attracts the best Free Agents. And in the NBA you don't go making deals whenever you want to. It has to make sense and Cal wouldn't be the only one making calls on something like that. Likely would take at least 3 years to get Gilly. Just not gonna happen. Plus I don't think Cal will leave until the recruiting dries up a bit and that day certainly ain't here. Right now he's got and will continue to get better players than everybody else. Go to Washington and thats not gonna be the case.
