Maryland to the Big 10

  • UM Board of Regents just voted to accept invite to the Big 10. Rutgers will follow. If UM's lawyers have figured out a way out of that $50 mil ACC buyout, it will open the door for others to leave. I think it would be awesome for KY, TN, and SC fans to round out the geography with some new rivalries in VA and NC. Here's hoping #15 and #16 are Va. Tech and NC State.

  • I would not be surprised at all to see UL go to the ACC now.

  • Reporters are saying UConn will take Maryland's spot, but Louisville is suddenly looking a lot better, for sure. Louisville's academic ratings are way too low for the ACC, though. They are in the high 100's in overall rating, and the ACC average is just above 50. I think Louisville eventually ends up in the Big 12.

  • I think UL could easily end up in the ACC, I think this is more likely than them to the BIG 12.

    Virginia
    Maryland-on way out.

    The Hail Mary would be Notre Dame, a long term developmental project would be UCONN.
    The key people need to remember is that this isn't based on how GOOD your team is, but more on HOW MANY more eyes you can add to watching the conference games.

    Lousiville does not come with that big of a number, unless someone believes that they would move the needle at places like Indianopolis and Cincinatti.

  • ND has already joined the ACC in everything but football. I wonder how that plays in. They did commit to playing 5 games each year against ACC teams. I think it's just a matter of time before they go all-in.

    Not at all likely. Tons of factors working against them. Uofl is in deep trouble.

    Yep... The question is this. Does the acc want to have an odd # of football teams or an odd # of football teams or does nd join on both. Uofl does not fit the acc. Metro commuter schools really don't fit in any bcs conference.

  • Keep in mind that Pitt and Syracuse are also joining the ACC next year. After Maryland leaves, they will have 13 members if they don't count Notre Dame and 14 if they do.

    Im glad you mentioned the 50 million buyout fee when Maryland leaves the ACC because I mentioned it on another thread and was questioned about that point. Maryland cut some secondary sport programs due to a financial problem yet they are going to pay 50 million to leave the ACC. I think that is despicable to cut sport programs because of a lack of money but pay that much to get out of the best conference in America IMO. Be sure to let us all know if they get of paying that 50 million since it was just enacted not too long ago and the ACC will fight it all the way.

  • Interesting development as FSU is now pushing for Notre Dame in football and/or UL to strengthen football in the conference instead of UCONN. Sounds like FSU and Clemson are trying to influence the conference to add a school with a football program instead of it becoming just a bball conference, which is exactly what happens if they add UCONN.

    That $50 million would likely be fronted by the Big 10, and they would take a percentage out of Maryland's cut for the next 10-15 years. The ACC's TV deal was so bad that they will still come out way ahead. I believe that is how they handled Nebraska's transition to the Big 10 a few years ago. To Maryland's credit, the president's press conference yesterday was all about how they did this move for the financial stability. They did not give us the academic excellence BS that everyone knows is not why they moved. It was announced that this move will allow them to bring back those sports that they had cut. It is almost universally seen as a good move for Maryland by national reporters who know much more about the details than we do, so it will hopefully work out for them.

  • One thing we can agree on is our hatred for UL. However, I must say that I have a lot respect what Jurich has built with regards to football. College Football is a Heavy Weight Boxing Match. UL is at least willing to jump in the ring and attempt to throw a few punches. UK refuses to even step in the ring.

    I agree there. Jurich has done a nice job. He has the advantage in that the university of Louisville has sacrificed their academic funding and building projects for athletic building projects. they've put almost all of their bonding capacity to athletics whereas UK has put almost all of it to academics over the last 15 years.

    Barnhart, if he can get the funding this coming year could do some great things in the next 5-10 years.

  • Andy Katz now reporiting on twitter that UL may be positioning itself to bump UCONN from ACC bid at last minute much like WVU did to UL 2 years back based on what he's hearing from insiders.

  • time will tell. WVU didn't bump uofl 2 years ago. UofL was never a serious candidate. McConnell tried to help, but it was a lost cause from the begining.

    Katz exact tweet was - "UConn still in the dark on ACC next move. Don't assume Huskies. Louisville is a serious player here to bump out UConn for 14th FB Acc spot.

    Two things. A. Katz is a b-ball guy. B. UConn is still the pick that make more sense on a ton of fronts. Mostly TV market and academic standing. Remember, AD's don't make these picks and decisions. University presidents do.

  • Presidents will want to keep FSU and Clemson happy, make a move to really degrade their football standings and Clemson and FSU will jump to the BIG 12

    I'm up in the air on how much Maryland really moved the needle vs what UCONN can do.
    I agree that I don't think that it is a lock the UL ends up in ACC, but like I thought before, they are a stronger candidate then many want to give them credit for.

    In all honesty I would RATHER UL go to BIG 12, this would dry up their Florida recruiting advantage (assuming FSU and Miami don't end up there as well).
