Matt, Jeff D, anyone talking about the spread offense?

  • Recruit mentioned UK going to a spread, Joker mentioned changing our pass/run ratio. I want to know what the change will do for our production, or the hope. The Urban Meyer spread is meant for speedy backs and and great athlete at QB. Are there other versions of the spread.

  • There are many versions of the spread. They range from the spread option to the Leach "air raid" to the Patriots spread pro-style offense. It'll be interesting to see what Joker does.

  • Basically any team that increase the splits in the OL to spread out the defense can be called a spread. You could call it a spread if you ran on every down or if you passed on every down or if you ran a balanced offense. Spread is a generic term that fits a lot of offenses.

  • The spread is a vastly over-rated and over-used term. Just because you line up in the shotgun doesn't mean you are in the spread.

To my knowledge joker has never used the term the "spread".

I don't think we will use different plays or change our scheme much. I just think you will see is throw the ball more much like we have seen when we have the personel to do so.

As far as c1's assertion that the line's splits are what make a team a "spread" team... That isn't true at all.

In today's game the pop-culture or layman's use of the term spread usually means the urban Meyer/Oregon spread option. Before the onslaught of spread option teams the spread was simply defined as the use of 3/4or 5 receivers. Spreading the field out.

The offense that UK ran under Brooks was a pro-style, west coast offense. It wasn't a "spread" offense, but it was designed to spread the field by utlizing not only the wr's but also the te's to for this purpose. As a result, UK would spread the field out w/ the passing game, and then attack the defense with the run, once the secondary started playing the pass.

The main difference since Joker took over is that for whatever reason, we have not used our Tight ends to spread the field like we did under Brooks. I wonder if Joker may be telling recruits "generically" that we are moving towards the spread, when in reality, he means using the Te's and moving back towards the way we ran things under Brooks. I def have heard Joker say multiple times this year that we have to use the pass to set up the run. I imagine that he wants to throw the ball enough early, stretch the field, in order to give guys like Clemons an opportunity to get an extra step on the defense. I guess time will tell.

  • i think we finally have playmakers at wr rb and te. i think u will see the power running game kinda scrapped for mor draws screens and misdirection. between coshik sanders clemons u got three guys that can catch and get up field. and between collins robinson u got two wr that can run screens. u watch shields will get alot of te screens his way this yr he has plus speed for the te position

    quagmire

  • That's the only guy who has spoken of it in those terms yet. I'm curious to see what it will look like, if there are indeed significant changes. Remains to be seen.

  • I'm thinking the offense you'll see this year is more gear to a New England style passing attack, spread the field in terms of having multiple targets running routes ranging from short to deep routes giving on the defense. I think we'll still see some of a power running game but not a lot of it, as someone mention, I think we'll see more draws and misdirection runs.

    Why so serious?

Dude are you saying that you can line up in a 4 or 5 wide out set in the shotgun with tight OL splits that it is a spread? Really?

The reason for the spread is to spread the field both in the running and passing game and you dont get that with tight OL splits. Different versions of the spread have different versions of OL gap spreads but all spread the OL gaps more than you would see in a more conventional non spread offense.

    C1180

  • I don't care which "spread" he uses as long as it not easily detected by the opposing defense. I would like to shock a few teams with some new plays. Plus I have hoping for some unconservative play calling this year.

  • Spread meaning OL spreads, not WR's. Usually but not all the time most teams with OL with really quick feet can play the spread. However if you have OL who are slow and are not quicker than the DL then you will be killed. Size is not a real factor but quickness is so does UK have lineman with quick feet to play the spread. Playing it on a down or two is not the spread but when it is played perfect, nothing is more fun to watch as a fan.

Another thing people forget is that the spread is a good offense to run out of because the linemen are so spread they always have good blocking angles especially against the defensive LB's. The spread is basically an off shoot of the Veer run at UK by Fran Curci.

The Mumme system was WR'r driven with usually 5 WR's out on every route which gives the QB lots of options a la Tim Couch. Of course that system was and has been perfected by Leach so it will be very interesting how he does at Washington State with inferior talent against the likes of Stanford, UCLA, and USC.

  • I hope everyone knows that Joker calls the Andre Woodson offense a spread offense.... Righfully it is a spread offense because all spread offense means is that you force the defense to spread out. That offense also had the pass/run ratio that Joker had discussed in this off season as well.... Don't get fooled thinking its going to be an Air Raid offense...

    UKani

  • ^that's what I was saying. The mere addition of a pass catching tight end will help to spread the defense out, and I believe that is what Joker is likely refereing to.

  • a Spread offense can mean lots of different things. An Urban Meyer/Rich Rodriguez/Chip Kelly spread offense features lots of receivers and QB's in the shotgun, but will run the ball 60-70% of the time. A Mumme/Leach/BYU spread offense doesnt have the QB in the shotgun that much and lines up with a TE most of the time, but they pass the ball 60-70% of the time. When you say spread offense these days it is just a generic term for any system than isnt a pro/NFL style or old college option attack.

My personal favorite offenses currently in college football are Oklahoma St & West Virginia's modified Leach systems. Love the diamond power running formation developed by Holgerson to bring more of a rush attack into the air raid system. Also Petrino's scheme where power rushing is just as important as down the field throwing.

Question What does all of those offenses have in common. Let me help you wider OL splits. If you dont spread the OL the defense other than the defensive secondary has no reason to spread. The DLs and LBs would just remain in their normal sets.
