Matt, what was the true attendance tonight? People in seats.

  • I think of all the things we CATS fans wine about the only real thing that gets AD's attention is dollar signs. If he looks up in the stands and sees empty seats that is what makes his decisions. Joker can't survive this. So, Matt, how did it look tonight?

And, what can expect next from Mitch?

I don't know. I've always said I'm terrible at guesstimating that and can only see one side of stadium but I'd go 40-45,000.

  • I'll answer this honestly. Matt is a terrific person. Very high character. He means well and he is great at reporting news. However, the thing that separates him and guys like Matt Jones is honesty. Jones will call things like he sees it. May will sugarcoat things. The real attendance was probably 34,000, but paid and reported attendance will be 49 - 50,000.

  • How is saying he can't accurately provide the number of people in the stands "sugar coating?" After thinking about it, does it matter what the exact number was tonight? Everyone who watched the game could tell CWS was painfully empty.

  • 54,000 and change. They do attendance the same way they have for the last 15 years, so there is no need to guess. It is the number announced, that is what is has been, and that is what gets recorded. Really not up for debate as far as I can see.

  • I dont remember ESPN showing the upper decks even once but I could be mistaken about that since I had to leave the game a few times but I did see a fairly large corner of 1 of the lower decks that was empty. Its sad that a homecoming game that turned out to be a lot closer than I thought it would be wasnt seen by more fans. A change will be made after the Tenn. game and maybe next year will be a happier time.

  • I asked a few other people what they thought. One said 42k, the other said 43k, fwiw

This.^ Who cares what the attendance was? It should come as no surprise that there were thousands upon thousands of empty seats.

  • Thanks Matt. It was a good game. Its a shame that the season has gone the way it has. It would have been interesting to have seen the team with either Smith or Towles leading them with a true passing attack. I'm not saying we would have been world beaters but we would have been much more competitive. There is still that WKU thing though. We shouldn't lose to Western.

  • Regardless of how many fans were in the stands, I was extremely proud to be a UK fan today. Our guys played by far their best game of the season! Could it just be our kids are growing up? We played smash mouth football against a top ranked SEC team and guess what, we smashed some mouths. I'm proud of this young team and like so many UK teams of the past this team has no quit in them. That is on the coaches and the players and good for them. As far as the fans...they have a lot of quit in them and I don't mind calling them out for it.

  • I was there last night and i would of guessed about 42,000.

  • I was there as well and i was thinking around 45K. Unfortunately many were wearing red and black. I've been in the new coach camp all season, but hoping Joker and the staff would show us enough to change our minds. Last night was definitely the best the team has played all season, but there are no moral victories. It would be nice to see how this team would look with a true passing threat. Saw a lot of young guys growing up last night.

It would be great to see a win next week and then see how they could close down the stretch. I think 2 SEC wins and Samford would give this staff a shot at staying. However, that's unlikely and ultimately the WKU loss will keep Mitch from being able to use injuries as a reason for bringing them back. We're probably still a couple of weeks away from having a clear picture of what Barnhart will do. He has much more patience than the rest of us.....for good or bad.

  • Only at UK would a coach who went 6-7, 5-7, and now 1-7 with a win against a non-BCS school be considered as a candidate to stay in charge.

Last week it was reported that uk announces the number of tickets sold, not the number of people that enter the gates. Huge difference.

I think you got your Matt's confused.

  • I am not a good judge on guessing the number, but I asked a couple of people and they guessed 42K to 45K. For those that did attend, although UK came up short, it was a good game to watch. UK played with heart. A shame they came up short.

  • I like both Matt's......not that anyone cares. Nor do I care whether or not you agree.... I find both entertaining and as honest as they can be....with what they know. Jones has his audience and May has his....I really don't see the problem with either.

    PatWren

  • I'm guessing 35-40K was closer to the gate #...(w/ 55K being reported as actual tickets sold)...Upper decks looked fairly deserted... And then there were vast #'s of open seats all over the lower bowl. CWS looked as empty as I can ever remember. (and that's w/ UGA traveling a solid crowd!)
