Mays chooses Kentucky

Wright State transfer Julius Mays has committed to play for John Calipari and the University of Kentucky, Mays told CatsPause.com Sunday evening.

  • JMO but I think Mays will be the last addition to the 12 class. Along with Harrow, Goodwin, Poythress, Wiltjer, Noel, Hood, and Cauley-Stein that gives Cal an 8 man rotation.

  • LOL; These boys are on it!

  • Nerlens is just awesome. He is such a super UK fan: tweeting and texting and cheering for the BBN. Oh, and he happens to be the number one recruit in the country! I am officially growing out my flat top.

  • Hope people realize how big of a get this is for UK. Was getting down to the nitty gritty and Mays fills such a specific need for next year's team: senior leadership, shooting ability and backcourt depth.

Probably the equivalent of landing a 5-star freshman.

  • Agreed Chris, man great get for us! I hope we can get Harrell too and call it a day. How u like our chances there, chris?

No clue. Wouldn't be surprised to see UK heavily involved with Harrell. Also wouldn't be shocked to see them just call it a day.

That would be great! The number 1 need I saw was a player that could provide depth at either guard, and number 2 a player that can bang and rebound to provide depth on the front line. Mays fills the first need and Harrel could fill the second.

  • If we were heavy on Bennett then I can't imagine why we would not be interested in Harrell; UNLESS, they don't see him as elite enough and being in the way of next year's prospects.

I see your point Chris. There are possibilities that linger.

Unless they think Harrell can make an immediate impact, there's a ton of top shelf frontcourt talent in 2013 and 2014 so they may just choose to hold off and not clutter up the roster.

  • I don't think that this kid replaces the shooting of Lamb, but we don't need for him to fill Lamb-like minutes either. We have Archie too.
Lambs position gets filled by commitee. He was that good. Poythress equals Kidd-Gilchrist, but we still don't have a Jones replacement yet. Could Cauley be a swing between Noel and Wiltjer?

I say we go after Montrezl Harrell abyway. We need #9 for Noel!

    Kataclysm

  • Excellent,

Now we have backcourt rotation!! Would love to see some versatile 3 like Gilchrist/Miller.

  • I am so happy to have all the new Cats but lets be careful with comparisons. Having players like Jones Davis Teague Kidd-Gilchrist Lamb and Miller only happens rarely. They had great chemistry. If the one and done rule were not around those guys could easily have had a three pear.

  • Congrats to the newest cat, Mr. Mays!!!! Glad we got him, especially since Bennett went to UNLV. I really hope we can add Harrell too. rockon

  • We may look back at this next March as much bigger than it appears to be now.

  • A friend of mine who works at UK, called me today to tell me that Mays had committed to UK because he knew I was on the road for mother's day. He doesn't have real inside connections, just friends who tell him things, but he made me rethink some things about Harrell after I made the statement that we needed him. He said he was told that getting Harrell might just upset the apple cart for some players for next year and that the staff had really looked into this kid to see if they went after him, would he be a player that was better at his position then the 2013 guys they were going after. So I guess there is alot more going on then just having Harrell come aboard, there's also a situation you lose a great 5 star player if he comes. I'm just glad that Cal and his staff has to make these decisions and not me.

  • The kid's a solid shooter with D-1 experience. From what I've seen of him, he's pretty solid. Gives Cal the luxury of giving breathers to Harrow and Goodwin. He can also play three guards for short periods if he wants to rest Poythress. This was a vital get. Either Harrell or Trocha won't be as vital, but would give Cal a starting five (Harrow, Goodwin, Poythress, Wiltjer, Noel), a reserve guard (Mays), a reserve forward (Harrell or Trocha) and a reserve center (Cauley-Stein). Then, whatever contributions Hood can make will be gravy.

Exactly what I was saying in the above post. UK staff may just hold off until 2013 as opposed to going after Harrell.

Yep. Exactly why cal didn't go after Anthony hickey last year. Hickey would have been going into his junior year when the 2013 class got here.

  • With a last name like Mays we can pretend he's from Central City.

    tWhit

  • He played against some solid competition last year, including Ohio Sate, Florida, Ohio, Butler and UC. I think Cal liked that aspect a lot. The additions of Harrow and Mays give the Cats instant experience. Those guys have been in the battle before and will complement the freshman class well.

I say go ahead an take the depth now. If we sign Harrell or Trocha that will give us nine true scholarship guys.

    01. Harrow
    02. Mays
    03. Goodwin
    04. Hood
    05. Poythress
    06. Harrell/Trocha
    07. Wiltjer
    08. Noel
    09. Cauley-Stein
    10.
    11.
    12.
    13.

That leaves four open rides. Mays' ride makes five. And I would say that at least two of Noel, Poythress, Goodwin, Harrow and Wiltjer's rides will open (IMO at least three and probably four is more likely). That gives you at worst six rides.

Willis gets one, leaving five. Then (just for the sake of argument) the Harrison Twins would leave three and James Young would two. Add a PF and that would still leave a free ride for Polson's senior season.

Like I said, I would be willing to bet that (unless there's a switch to the 20 y.o. rules, I think we'll lose more than two to the league, but even if we don't, that's OK by me. The 2013 class is solid as far as perimeter guys go, but it isn't as flush with big men (especially with Taylor committing to Bama). If we only sign Willis, Young and the Harrisons, but return Wltjer, Trocha/Harrell and Cauley-Stein with experience under their belts, I'll be fine with that. There is a much better crop of big guys in the 2014 class.
