Mays chooses Kentucky

  • Damn he had some big games. Honestly I haven't paid that much attention to this guy but he really put up some big time scoring games. Looks like he can shoot the 3. I love our versatility at the guard spots now. Its going to be kind of odd having experience at the guard spots.

    tWhit

  • What I like best is that he shot 42 percent next season "Mays, who also shot 42 percent from beyond the arc next season". Chirs, Lets hope that he does shoot 42 percent next season.

  • He's a 2g/pg we don't need him to be physical with other players. His job will be to provide backup at the guard spots and shoot the 3 to keep teams from zoning us.

Exactly what I was saying in the above post. UK staff may just hold off until 2013 as opposed to going after Harrell.

I can't envision a Harrell signing hurting UK in any fashion. If he's good enough to keep someone from signing for 2013 then that's good for UK and if he's not, we have plenty of rides.

I say go ahead an take the depth now. If we sign Harrell or Trocha that will give us nine true scholarship guys.

    01. Harrow 02. Mays 03. Goodwin 04. Hood 05. Poythress 06. Harrell/Trocha 07. Wiltjer 08. Noel 09. Cauley-Stein 10. 11. 12. 13.

That leaves four open rides. Mays' ride makes five. And I would say that at least two of Noel, Poythress, Goodwin, Harrow and Wiltjer's rides will open (IMO at least three and probably four is more likely). That gives you at worst six rides.

Willis gets one, leaving five. Then (just for the sake of argument) the Harrison Twins would leave three and James Young would two. Add a PF and that would still leave a free ride for Polson's senior season.

Like I said, I would be willing to bet that (unless there's a switch to the 20 y.o. rules, I think we'll lose more than two to the league, but even if we don't, that's OK by me. The 2013 class is solid as far as perimeter guys go, but it isn't as flush with big men (especially with Taylor committing to Bama). If we only sign Willis, Young and the Harrisons, but return Wltjer, Trocha/Harrell and Cauley-Stein with experience under their belts, I'll be fine with that. There is a much better crop of big guys in the 2014 class.

    01. Harrow - very likely to leave
    02. Mays - has to leave, Senior
    03. Goodwin - prolly will stay but difficult to say at this point
    04. Hood - may leave due to graduating
    05. Poythress - very likely to leave
    06. Harrell/Trocha - should stay
    07. Wiltjer - should stay
    08. Noel - not likely at all to stay
    09. Cauley-Stein - should stay
    10. Beckham - has to leave, Senior
    11.
    12.
    13.

    Almost certain to return:
    Harrell/Trocha
    Cauley-Stein

After those the rest are all up in the air.

Poythress and Harrow are NOT very likely to leave. Noel is the only one who is certain to leave. Poythress and harrow might be 50/50.

It's not about "rides" it's about minutes. Cal doesn't play 10 guys. He plays 6-8.

He also doesn't want other coaches using pt against him on he recruiting trail.

    So bizarre.

    It sure is.

What's the downside? He gets to go to grad school for free while playing on the biggest basketball stage in the country.

Worst case--he doesn't play that much, but he furthers his education and has an entree in a state where everybody knows his name.

Best case--education, notoriety, and plays significant minutes in a deep title run--something he was never going to get at Wright.

Believe his coach is boys with Painter. Should pretty easily explain that. Was clearly pushing him toward Purdue.

Outside of Noel, very difficult to project who will go and who will stay from next year's team.

Poythress has an NBA body and NBA game for sure. He'll probably be a lottery pick at some point. But my point is a lot of that is projected on what kind of season he has next year.

  • Just my opinion but I think Poythress is more likely to go top 5 than slip out of the top 10.

Dudes a stud, it's a weak draft and he put on a show during the high school all star weekends with scouts in attendance.

He got a nice bump in his ranking and is still probably too low.

Goodwin and his speed and 6'10 1/2 wing span and 6'4 point guard potential probably won't last past the lottery either.

I kind of expect to lose our top 6 again.

  • Sometimes I wonder how valuable a deep bench is for Cal; and how much he is concerned about it. He's only going to play 6,7 guys anyhow--unless injury or other problems strike. I'd really like to see some great talent down to no. 8, 9 and watch Cal handle that "problem". He hasn't had talent that deep so far at UK and I'm not at all sure that he wanted it either. He sometimes admitted that he had difficulty in getting Miller and Wiltjer the playing time they deserved last season and they were only 6,7. But if he'd cut into the "heroes" time too deeply, there would certainly be morale problems. Oh such tough times for Cal and UK. :--))

I'm kindof baffled about this. A guy is worried about one of his former players going to a school that has had 7 first round draft picks in the past 2 years and will probably add five more this year (possibly 6). It doesn't make any sense at all.

Makes perfect sense. He wanted him to go to Purdue biggrin

  • Welcome to BBN Mays! Glad to land him.

  • I understood that part, lol.

I looked it up- Purdue has had one NBA first rounder since Glenn Robinson in 1998 and that was Jajuan Johnson this year.
