Morgan Newton calling guys out.

  • Via twitter

"Not enough of our guys want to get better. People don't want to work when it's time to work. Oh Well."

I'm gald to see Newton taking a bigger leadership role, but damn, I thought the program was past this. I'm still concerned about the lack of leadership on the roster. From the group we have, who will step up and be the Woodyards, Jarmons, Peters, Cobbs, ect....? Who will push the ENTIRE team to work their butts off in the Summer to get better? Thats the only way this team will improve on last season.

  • Well hopefully they get their tails in gear.

I wonder if he's talking about the WRs because I follow most on twitter and the only one that tweets about getting work in and stuff like that is Brian Adams.

In a way yes it is but this is what we want Morgan to do, show leadership and get on these guys to get out there with him. Calling them out on twitter may get them in gear.

  • Well this sounds more encouraging.

Morgan's tweet from a few minutes ago:
Better effort today, guys showing some pride and still out there working. Class in a few.

I didn't mean Morgan's tweet - just the fact that he felt he needed to tweet that. If you follow some of the players on twitter, you know there are a significant group much more interested in the next pool party right now than they are in workouts and individual practice.

    DACats86

  • When you have "veterans" like Ace Boogie tweeting about getting money, etc. & have never done a thing on the field, it's not surprising.

I agree and when they have some free time during the day he shouldn't have to get on them to be working out but I'm glad he's showing enough leadership to call them out.

As far as the pool parties I've seen those tweets as well but you do have to remember these are college kids not pro athletes, they have to have time to be a kid too.

  • Yeah, no doubt about them needing to be kids, but they shouldn't be turning down the QB1 asking them to run some drills to go partying. Plenty of time for both right now.

That is something that I have never understood. Maybe its me being 41 and not remembering when I was in college but if I were a div 1 football, basketball, baseball, etc player I'd be getting better all the time. You have no wife no kids no clock to punch. I don't get it. You can't spend 2 hours a day during the summer lifting and running routes?

  • It's early guys. They have only been back for a few days. Need to get in the swing of things and leaders need to emerge. Morgan is emerging...

To me, this is good news... Why? Because we knew we would need leadership to step up. Good to see that it is.

    hoptownukfan

  • I'm glad to see Morgan showing the leadership position and calling folks out about not working hard. Part of being a leader is being willing to do the unpopular thing (Such as call out teammates who would rather party than work hard).

They are all kids and deserve to have fun, but you should be having fun after you've gotten your workouts in.

  • This is a matter that should have stayed in the locker room............Joker needs to do like Cal and STOP all outside communication this summer for Newton and possibly ALL football players and HOPE that it has the same type of reaction from Newton that JORTS had.......DO IT YOURSELF AND SHOW PEOPLE THAT YOU ARE FOR REAL FIRST!!!!!

    lscatfan

  • Probably right on that, Iscatfan. I think Twitter remains a little dangerous for college teams. Kids are way too emotional and impulsive at times to avoid problems. And in this case, it could have been one guy who frustrated Newton. But it turns into a topic where people are wondering if there's a team-wide issue.

ALSO... Welcome to the site. Good to have you posting with us! cheers

  • I agree. Twitter is not the forum for calling out your teammates and then expect them to respect and follow you.

While Twitter is dangerous, its here and it ain't goin' nowhere. I like what Newton did. Call them out. It seemed to have worked. The next day more of them showed up. There are too many upper classmen in this recieving corp that are underachieving. They need someone to kick their tails. If not, they are wasting scholarships. Newton knows that he cannot be the QB he wants to be if his recievers aren't catching the ball. I think he is feeling the urgency he has not felt until now.

By the way I say all of this with a smile on my face. I'm not upset, just statin' the facts.

    lol

  • Thank goodness somebody is calling them out. Joker doesnt seem to be showing that kind of leadership that I have heard of.
So Morgan feels he has to speak out. Not good really.
    Joker, Its your move.

Uh dude Joker can't tell them to get off their butt and go workout on their own, it's against NCAA rules and stuff.

And even if he could, he probably shouldn't.

This way it is test of who will step up as a leader among the players.

  • I love this move by morgan. yes put the slackers on notice. let them know that the lack of effort is being watched. if they have a problem, they know who to see.

    kycatwclaws63632

  • Jeez. It's good to see Newton stepping up, but throwing teammates under the bus is not good. As far as leadership, I'd say Trevathan will be the one to push his teammates this summer and fall. McCaskill should also be a great leader.
