Moving forward...

  • What do you expect to see the next couple games as we move closer to our conference opener v. Florida? Any personnel change ups? Blowouts, tough games, or even a loss?
I think we should beat the next two teams comfortably, and hopefully our defense will get some confidence back before the Florida game. I originally thought mobley might see some more time than sanders moving forward, but I'm not sure about that if the reports of him complaining on twitter are accurate...? That would look like an opening for perhaps Taylor if the coaching staff gets wind of that and mobley does not make it right. Not sure what we can change at this point defensively, just have to play better, and hope that yestrday was not a true indicator of how bad we will play defensively every game the rest of the year... I thought smith looked great as a sophomore starting his 3 rd game, excited to see his play the rest of the year, especially the next two games at home!!

  • Guess nobody is ready to talk about the next couple games yet...

    shepp2700

  • Think UK will win next week by two touchdowns. I think the offense will carry over from UL (minus the turnovers) and the defense will look better with another week of work, film study and a lesser opponent.

  • I agree. I like our chances against kent state. I will not be surprised if our defense shuts them down and leaves us all scratching our heads lol...

    shepp2700

  • I'll get over this week as soon as I start packing the cooler for Saturday.

  • I think the next two weeks we blow them out by 3 touchdowns or more. I anticipate significant improvement from the defense. I do not think either of the next 2 teams can stop our offense. The O-line was really good. I think we will run all over Kent and Western. If the D does not come along in the next 2 games then we have real cause for concern. Lots of teams struggle on one side of the ball or the other in their opener.

  • I'm over it!!! Hell, we lost a game we were expected to lose... And as far as I know we came out healthy!! It doesn't do anything for me personally to spend any time analyzing a poor performance in week 1.. I find it just best to start focusing on our next opponent in a short week.. We need to get this one behind us quick and make sure we get these next 2 wins!!

  • I certainly hope the defense looks improved.

Kent State put up 266 yards of offense last week against Towson. They didn't have much success in the run game (2.7 YPC) or in the passing game (7.5 YPA) so, ostensibly, our defense should be able to pitch an absolute shutout.

However, given UK's inability to execute even one of the three defensive assignments (run stopping, pass rushing, coverage) with any consistency, I will not be surprised to see Kent State make this a close game or for UK to allow more than 300 yards of offense.

I may have a small sample size to base my prediction on, but our defense wasn't just bad on Sunday, it was downright disgraceful.

Gosh, I hope we don't give up more yards then Towson did, I don't think I will say we improved if that happens! Even if we win lol

  • 1. I hope to see Brause benched and maybe McDuffen (even though he completely whiffed on a tackle) or Rancifer at WLB. I think Brause was a total mistake by staff and hope they come off that decision quickly to get the talented kids reps vs. weaker foes.
    2. I hope to see Dixon/Faulkner (don't know where his high ankle sprain is at) play over Benton...I'd love to see if a kid like Tiller can take the CB spot and move Neloms back to safety...but I think we're well past that as an option.
    3. Enough of Tristan Johnson at DT...Christian Coleman is the superior talent by far...let him backup Rumph/Cobble.

I think we can improve in Minter's scheme to cover better and the offense can be adequate and we have a shot at UF in 3 weeks. Call it crazy...but UF's offense looks so un-organized.

...it's not about confidence, it's about ability. Yes, I hope things change and expect the defense to grow but if they were not prepared and ready for UL then I just can't see how two games against KSt and WKU are going to make them better.

Personnel wise, we are hurting on defense. As usual, we either have a decent offense and bad defense of vice versa; we just can't seem to put it together for some reason.

I agree it's about ability and technique... I just meant that the defense has lost confidence from such a poor performance, followed by having to hear that they are terrible and responsible for our potentially bad season. That can weigh on a young D mentally!! It all started with UL breaking their will mentally on that first drive, then getting the 2 pter. I think it's critical they get some of that confidence back the next couple weeks, and try to tune out what some are saying(minus the coaches of course lol)...

    shepp2700

  • Agreed. Time to move on. Can only glean so much from the first game of the season.

Next week against what should be a lesser opponent will begin to tell the tale IMO.

  • Improvement. As simple as that for me. I want to see forward progress from week one to week two, and not have to wait until the last couple games of the season when it is too late.

  • I would expect to see the Cats beat KSt by 4 TDs. The offense should continue to grow and our D should be mad as hell. Hopefully we get a chance to see some of the freshmen who have supposedly been so good in practice. Our D needs improvement across the board. I loved Dixon last yr, where is he? Man we miss Danny and Winston! I hope they can find a solution there. And our coverages on recievers was abysmal, it seemed every catch was totally uncontested. Lots of work to do, but sometimes a punch in the gut will wake some guys up. I think WKU is a tougher game, but after another week to play and prepare I think we still win by 14-20 pts.

  • No doubt we played bad on defense but I think we had just as many problems with our scheme as we did personel... Those of you that recorded the game go to 4:25 in the second quarter and tell me that front will work... UofL shifted and brought the TE over to the right side and only Dupree and Brause were in their way with Cobble lined up over the Center, Rumph and Ukwu were both on the weakside and didn't slide over... Cobble, Brause and Dupree will never beat 3 lineman, FB and a pulling OG/WR like on that play... That's 3 on 6+... Please go watch that...

My goal isn't to only bring up the negative plays that's why I also want everyone that recorded the game to go to 1:45 in the 2nd quarter and watch how our guys play up front the next few snaps when we aren't slanting, twisting, stunting, blitzing... On the inside zone play Cobble, Rumph, Ukwu and Dupree all show they are physical and strong enough to play like a true 40 front. Ukwu can also rush the passer and set the edge when he's lined up with out-side leverage however he isn't a DE like Justin Smith of the 49ers (310# monster 5 tech) or JPP that can line up head up over 320# OT and man handle him...

If I were Rick Minter I would stop trying to force a square peg in a round hole and scrap this 34 until Langston Newton, Ross (if he makes it), Swain (if we can actually land him) arrive and are ready. I would also find me someone better in space to plug in at SAM when teams go 3/4 wide because Miles is not good in space yet, however he may be a good ILB in those situations... I would find someone who gives great effort, athletic that isn't scared to get a stinger and plug them in at WLB, hopefully it's Rancifer or Henderson... Who cares if they don't know the playbook or are 190#, that's what the other 10 on the field are for, let them tell em were to line up and what to do... Programs all over the country do this when certain players don't work out... At the end of the day I think our woes are fixable our D-line can play out of a 40 front, I saw that...

  • I am a big Minter fan but I am truly disappointed in him. He had a chance in the first series to throw everything but the kitchen sink at Teddy in the end zone and he went prevent. Yes the ul receiver made a great catch but if we get pressure there, it could have changed the attitude of our defense for the whole game. I want aggressiveness when we play defense, the ul game we had nothing. But like others have said, I am over it, but I want to see those changes in the Kent State game.

Actually it's more about confidence in ASSIGNMENT than ability.

We had NO idea how to adjust to the motion and 'change of formation strength" that UofL was using against us in the first half on Sunday. If you notice UofL used a TON of motion to change the strength of the formation but you didn't see our defense shift to adjust to this. In the second half we did and we were better against their run game.

You also notice how "slow" we played. Guys were "catching" blocks. Why? Ability to an extent but it also has to do with the guys not being comfortable in their new spots.

I think the Braus Experiment needs to end as well.

I could be 100% wrong, but I think the issue in run defense has to do with us not adjusting to motion and having a couple of guys with no experience. Our d-line didn't get pushed around nearly as bad in the second half once we started adjusting to their motion. In the first half we got a push but often times they ran away from it because they had us outflanked.

You're a great poster, seriously, but you're off base here. We blitzed and LOADED the box on 1st and second down. On 3rd down they ran a quick 3 step drop on the pass down the sideline. It didn't matter if we had blitzed all 11 guys, you can't get to a qb on a 3 step drop fade. That's why they ran that, they knew we couldn't get there. He threw a perfect pass.

hop, I disagree, on that 3rd play, no wr could run that route (8yds for a 7yd gain) in a quick 3 step drop. There was no pressure on that play, no hands up by the DL in the passing zones, he had too much time and he did throw a hell of pass and catch by wr. I would watch it again but its too depressing, lol.
