Murray beats Kentucky in baseball

  • Murray State beats Kentucky 7-3 in baseball tonight. According to radio voice Neil Price it is the first win for Murray over UK since 1997. Bad loss for Cats to start final week.

  • Hate to see that. This team is built for weekends, though. Just not enough depth to use on mid-week matchups.

  • There goes the super reg 1 seed, unless UK can win a few more SEC games.

  • That's not good. Really need to sweep MSU this weekend for obvious reasons.

  • Uhhhhm...Looking at this like the loss at the SEC Tourney Men's BBall Final?

    Maybe, a good thing overall?

  • If UK can beat MSU and then make it to the finals in the SEC Tourney they have a good chance to host a super reg.

I don't think so in this case. They're struggling with some of the "little things" right now. Need to get it fixed quick so they can go into the tourney with momentum.

To expand on this thought, baseball is MUCH different from football and basketball regarding "upsets." I am sure Murray was jacked up for this game and UK was not. I am sure UK was resting anyone that had any type of a tweak of any muscle, etc. I am sure UK pitched someone that will not be pitching this weekend. I am sure Murray threw their ace pitcher. Baseball is truly a "game of inches." I did not watch or listen to the game but there could have been a flare that barely landed in fair or foul territory. There could have been a ball(s) hit in the infield or outfield gaps that were just out of reach. There are many other examples on this issue, but I will spare the obvious. With all of that being said, UK should still have been able to "out-class" Murray with its "younger" players or reserves, As I said, I did not watch or listen to the game so some of the assumptions or possibilities above may have not occurred. However, in any close baseball game, you can probably look back to one or two plays which did not go your way that cost you the game. I guess what I am saying is we do not need to over react to this game. As someone else posted, this could actually benefit the team in the long run. GO CATS!!!!!

  • This loss is meaningless in the big picture.... and certainly nowhere near the VMI / Gardner Webb level on the basketball side.

For a little perspective, take a look at what else happened around the SEC last night.

    Samford 12 Florida 7
Arkansas State 10 Ole Miss 5
    Middle Tennessee 11 Vols 4
    Jacksonville State 8 Auburn 7

And in the final OOC game for our next opponent.....

Central Arkansas 2 Mississippi State 0

Midweek games hold as much importance as MLB spring training games.

This league and this sport in general are built and evaluated on what happens on weekends.

Nothing has changed in regards to our seeding or standing based on last night, what we get or earn will come in the next 10 days.

  • my comment about VMI was a joke and not to be really taken seriously..... sorry if some of you did.

yeah, we know our bread is buttered winning the SEC and having a good SEC tourney. That's our main focus right now. This weekend

Exactly right. So long as Kentucky takes care of business this weekend and wins the SEC East (or overall title) they'll be a top 8 national seed. That's what Kendall Rogers told me yesterday. Their overall resumé is still too good.

  • Agreed. The primary purpose for mid-week games is to get work for guys that aren't getting in the rotation on the weekends, and sometimes some experience for younger position players that you will need next year on the weekends. Having said that, this team has taken care of the mid-weeks really well as opposed to last years team. I think that bodes well for future depth.
