NCAA plans on re-training refs on block/charge calls

I think pretty much all of us were befuddled by what constituted a block or a charge last season and apparently we weren't the only ones. The NCAA is re-training officials on what the correct call is. I thought the statistics Sporting News cites in the article I've linked below were telling: Supposedly the officials in NCAA Tournament got 90% of all calls correct but only 65% of block/charge calls correct. That can't happen.

It's a damn good thing they're going to retrain them. The amount of charges were completely outrageous.

Get rid of the rule altogether for the secondary defender. Ruins the game IMO.

By definition, a charge should be *extremely* challenging to draw. If called properly, you'd only have charge be the outcome about 1 out of 5 times, maybe less. What we saw last year seemed to be about 3 out of 5.

Much, much needed. It's safe to say my blood pressure will be much lower next season.
Last year was maddening and UK and MKG specifically were one of its biggest victims last season. It was surprising when the refs actually got one right.
A charge is a devastating call IMO. It's a turnover and it counts as a foul. Like Jeff said, should be very difficult to draw a charge if those are the consequences.

While they're at it, maybe they can re-train the officials on what a constitutes a moving screen. If they start calling these when they happen, Vandy, Florida and UofL have to use different offensive sets.

I am glad they are retraining the charge/block call but they also need to go over players shooting jumpshots and jumping into the defender. I hate it when a defender has perfect position and the 3pt shooter jumps into the defender initiating the contact and the defender is called for the foul...

Yep. It's the rule of verticality at that point. If the defender jumps straight up or stands straight up with arms straight in the air and the shooter jumps into the defender, that should be a charge, if anything since the shooter is displacing the defender from his "established position". My brother Eric and I call it the Luc Longley foul. No player in NBA history had more fouls called on him for just standing there; it truly was amazing how many there were.

Better to get rid of refs and let the players call the violations - like on the street.

I fully agree with dustarm. It really irks me to see the shooter obviously trying to jump into the defender. It's to the point that I now see defenders trying to dodge the intruding shooter rather than to stop the shot, etc. I'm not sure that more of the same ole same ole training will improve things very much. Perhaps a re-write of the rules, with clearer, understandable description of charge/blocks would help more than training.
