Neal Brown?

  • Larry Glover saying that UK and Brown are in preliminary talks. Yeah I know who he is, but is this really the home run hire that Barnhart needs to make? I really hope we can do a little better than this. IMO, we don't need another former Ky. boy with no head coaching experience.

  • I also heard this. I can't imagine this is his first choice. I can't see anyone else offering Brown a head coaching position. IF this were true I could only hope that MB has already had feelers out to all of these other bigger name candidates and they had all turned him down. The only other thing one could possibly imagine would be if MB already has a coach that has agreed in principle to coming here and wanted Brown as OC.

I just don't see Brown as head coach this soon. And if we somehow are in negotiations with Brown, I can't imagine we are hiring him as an OC without even having a coach. I just can't imagine this is the road that MB is willing to go down after what just happened.

  • High Risk / Return Hire....

    Pros:
    Successful at previous coaching stops
Had been a head coach / coached in SE and Texas
    Great Offensive
    Young / High Energy
    Good Recruiter

    Cons:
    Not a house hold name
Never been a head coach at a large university
May have trouble building strong staff

Don't be surprise, if he is being approach about the OC position under another HC

  • Dykes with Brown as OC instead of Franklin makes a lot of sense.

I'd agree with this. I'd also say that Smart, Foster or any other defensive assistant with Brown would make sense. Brown has tweeked the "Mumme/Franklin" system a lot. It's a lot of the same concepts but it isn't as "silly" or unbalanced as the way mumme and franklin run it.

  • I would be absolutely floored if this was the guy to replace CJP. He's all of 32 years old, has three years of OC coaching experience at Troy, and three years OC coaching experience in a BCS conference. This is a guy MB would be paying less than the coach he just fired. Hiring Brown would tell me either MB has already struck out (and given up on) ALL the more experienced candidates, or he has no idea what he is doing.

No offense to Brown, he may be a great head coach one day, but this program needs an oak, not a sapling, to start the rebuilding process.

That's completely true. I'd be shocked if Neil is being courted as the head coach this early in the game.

Would it not make more since to let HC hire his staff for continuity?

Mitch still has to clear contracts with the staff. Main reason my mind jumped to Dykes is he and Brown already ran a similar system and since it's pretty known that Tony Franklin won't be back at UK maybe they've already talked to Sonny he has agreed and requested Mitch to go ahead and speak to Neal about the OC position. All this conversation is going through an agent so it's likely about numbers.

Also makes complete sense if Tony isn't coming with Sonny it allows Tony to be interim coach and then Sonny doesn't have to wait around for the bowl game for Tech to start working at UK.

Unless HC is already in place and they are piecing together staff with said HC's guidance.

Who's to say that a HC candiate hasn't been selected or a candiate has asked UK to see if Brown would be interested in the OC role, if they were hired. I'm guessing Mitch and Brown know each other quite well.

True, although I do not want Foster here as coach. No offense, but long-time assistants hardly ever turn out to be good head coaches. I just think there is a reason he is still an assistant. The man is close to 55 years old and has yet to be head coach. That can't be by choice. He has applied for a couple of head jobs and got none of them. Maybe I am wrong about that but it just seems that if he were that hot of a coaching candidate then he would be the head man somewhere by now.

  • Tuscaloosa yesterday...preliminary talks with Brown today. I could only hope, no...BEG that we could have Kirby Smart as HC and Neal Brown as OC.

Charlie Strong was passed over for numerous jobs too and he seems to be doing fairly well. Some guys just don't interview well (that was the word on Charlie) but that doesn't necessarily mean they won't be good head coach.

The other big pro is that he's a local boy and UK grad which means he'd be more inclined to stick around awhile if things go well. There's value to getting him into the fold, but hopefully it's as OC.

That is correct. Now that the obvious one (since I said most) is out of the way, name me another.

  • I think it is smart to reach out to Neal, and agree with Matt that there is a good deal of test and measuring going on now. It might be as coordinator, or in my opinion, if it is as a head coach, I would rather Barnhart go for an up and comer if the home run hires balk than damaged goods. We need a fresh start. You can sell that to the fans. . you can't sell Cutcliffe or Fulmer. unless they have someone like Neal Brown as OC.
