Neglected to mention earlier... Maxwell Smith

  • Saw Max working out with some of the Cats after camp today. He looked really good. Rock has done some work on him. I bet he's 15-20 pounds heavier, good muscle addition in upper body, legs.

That is great to hear. I truly believe that taking the first team reps all spring and this fall is going to give Maxwell the confidence to play at another level. I've said all year that I believe Smith will have minimum 2500 years and 25+ TDs. Can't wait ro see this kid play this season. This offense imo is really going to surprise a lot of folks, begining with Loserville.

sounds very promising JD. Let's hope he gets some good chemistry with those WR's and like Tommy said, his numbers should really be able to jump off the page and give out RB's some running lanes. RB's could be our strength alone with DL

  • I love what I'm hearing from this kid. He's physically ready and is a leader.

Couldn't agree more. He has become a leader on the team, which is definitley needed in the QB position.

  • The only thing that scares me is what Joker said a while back about "Curtis Pulley won the job during the spring then Andre came in and acted like the starter and the rest is history"... Talking about how Morgan could come in and win the job over Max once healthy. I really hope Max can keep the job he is twice the qb IMO. He has all the intangibles, it really would be great if he could throw for 2500 yards and 25 td's while Josh Clemons rushes for 1400 and 10+ td's... How is his knee doing? GO CATS!!!

I think what you are forgetting that both Andre and Curtis practice during the whole spring against one another and the main reason Curtis was ahead was due to Andre not showing much leadership during spring.

    Why so serious?

I see very little chance they bench Smith for Newton going into the season, but the only thing that scares me is how good Newton apparently always looks in practice. I hope Joker doesn't once again buy into the fool's gold that is Morgan Newton the practice player. Smith has clearly won the spot, IMO, and Newton once again doing well in practice should not change that.

If he has that kind of year we win seven easily. I think he has the talent to put up those numbers. If the OL holds up and the recievers can get open and catch we may have something here. RB is the least of our worries, we have plenty of able bodies/talent there.

Leadership wasn't the issue. Understanding how to read a defense and running our offense was amdre's issue. That summer he lived in the film room. Curtis didnt. If maxwell does that then he will
    Make a huge jump.

Bottom line is that the season boils
    Down to uofl, mizzou, miss
State, vandy, Arkansas, uscjr and Tennessee.

  • There's a lot to be excited about with Maxwell. From all accounts... big strong kid who throws a catchable ball... quick release... great work ethic... and seems to be a good leader. Still has to do it on the field but he now has some experience, been in the system for a year and a half, and seems to be doing all the right things to prepare himself for the season.

Agreed. There is NO way this kid does not have success and show great improvement this fall. King is a proven WR, although not as a #1. I look for Robinson and Collins to have HUGE years. But, ultimately, it all comes down to the OL and their ability to run block. If they gel, and stay healthy, UK can have one of the better O units in the SEC.

To be honest i'm not worried about our ability to run block it's our pass blocking that scares the crap out of me. The next time any of you guys see the Saints playing watch how they use their Rb's/TE's to help pass block. The Saints will use a TE and RB to chip block a DE/OLB for a split secon then the OT will do his thing. With the TE and RB both getting a quick shot on the DE/OLB it gives a OT time to set up, it allows him to get back into position and works very well. This also doesn't take as long to happen as one would think. It all happens very quick. I really wish we could do this. I've read alot of teams are now doing this. We all know the NFL is a copy cat league...

Randy, Summers and Joker have great schemes but I would love to see them add this. We will often keep a RB/TE in to help but our RB's don't attack like i'm talking about. Our RB's will sorda wait until the DE/OLB gets upfield before helping, the Saints RB comes out of stance and attacks the DE/OLB like they are blocking on a running play then release on their route. Guys like George, Sanders and Clemons would do very well at this with their low center of gravity... In truth you are using 3 people to take care of one pass-rusher but it happens so fast it doesn't really hurt the TE's/RB's chances of getting open.

  • Feel like Smith has been a leader on and off the field since the moment he stepped foot on campus. Never seemed like or had the mentality of a freshman.

He's a guy that's going to put in the work.

  • You guys who are just assuming that our recievers will be great, and that the O-line will be solid are crazy. Now I am hopeful about our recievers developing and someone young stepping up, but to assume that is definitly going to happen beforehand is a little delusional.

Also, our O-line is so young, there is just going to be a major learning curve for them. Fortunately, the first 3 games (w/ UL beinig the toughest) give us some time to gel, but we also lack depth, which generally spells disaster in conference play. It always amuses me when I see predictions that have the caveat:" if our some position can stay healthy." You can never expect to remain healthy in the SEC, hence, the need for the kind of depth UK never has.

Personally, my two biggest concerns are O-line and Defense. We are asking a lot of youth and inexperience to step up in these positions, and though I think our 1's will probably be fine, the lack of depth will catch us in conference. Still sticking with 5 wins, but as always, I hope I am wrong.

Good to hear about Max though. I have a pretty good feeling about him this year.

I wish I had a before-and-after picture to post now. You would be really impressed by how much he's changed in just a short amount of time.
