I saw the picture on the Herald Leader. You can actually twist our knew like that when you stand up. It looks bad but where knee injuries usually happen it's when the knee hyper extends or when it's hit from the side and completly displaced. I'm not saying he didn't ravage the ligaments in his knee. But it's not as clear a situation as when somebody hyper-extends the knee.

No way you can do that to your knee when you are standing up from a chair, unless you are Gumby. Just looking at that picture, I'd predict MCL is 95% likely torn with likely ACL tear just from the sheering force. Glad to hear the X-rays were negative as I was worried about a Tib Plateau fracture. Terrible either way.
