Nerlens Noel out for season

  • LEXINGTON, Ky. – – University of Kentucky men’s basketball freshman Nerlens Noel will be out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL injury suffered during Tuesday night’s game at Florida.

According to the UK medical staff, surgery should be expected in the next two to three weeks. The normal timetable for recovery is estimated at six to eight months.

The 6-10 freshman was leading the nation in blocks (106) and blocks per game (4.4) and ranked second in the Southeastern Conference in rebounding (9.5). He was also averaging 10.5 points per game for the Wildcats.

  • Love ya, Noel. Get better. You have a long career, and life, ahead of you.

  • I hate that for this young man. He has a bright future ahead of him, just hate to see it happen to such a good kid.

  • so now that the news is out and final. what are the experts opinions on what this does to his draft stock, moves him well down right?

any chance he comes back to prove himself post-injury and regain his top 5 pick status?

draft will be inside of 4 months from his surgery date. the absolute worst thing Noel could do is rush this.

  • Will be interesting to see how this impacts his draft stock......

  • oh and btw the way don't have Dr. Andrews do the surgery. what he did to RGIII should be looked at as malpractice.

    goldenbearcatz

  • He won't be back.... Good luck Nerlens!

  • Best of everything Noel. Recover soon and get ready for your NBA team where you will play with John Wall, MKG, or Anthony Davis!

Tell that to Adrian Peterson! I think he may disagree.

  • Get well Nerlens.

  • Hope a speedy recovery for the flat top.

  • Thoughts and prayers go out to Nerlens and his family. I really hope this doesn't damage his stock too much and a team takes a chance on him.

Per Twitter, at least one of the ESPN analysts, Paul Biancardi, says Noel will still be drafted this year in the top 3.

  • Yeah, this is a crap draft anyway, so he's not going anywhere on the draft board.

Dr. Andrews is the best. What happened to RGlll was just a freak thing. Most of the pros go to him for ligament surgery. All players don't respond the same after a serious surgery. I don't know who did Adrian Petersons surgery, but, he came back fine. It all depends on the player and how he rehabs.

true however, when you have someone who injures their one ACL in college and that repair is performed using patella tendon from the other knee, who have weakened both knees.

now a few years later the same guy injures the other ACL, Andrews with RGIII went ahead and harvested patella tendon off of the knee RGIII had surgically repaired at Baylor.

so he purposely weakened a knee that has already been surgically repaired. this is where i have issue and RGIII now has had both of his knees operated on twice.

just sayin, there are other methods for repair.

Best of luck to Nerlens in his recovery. Don't rush it big fella, take your time, your body will tell you when your ready, don't let some GM do that for you.

Here's a great article on AP's reconstruction (with images and diagrams to explain the injury) .... and it was Dr. Andrews who did Adrian's surgery.

  • Andrews is the best in the world when it comes to this surgery so hell yea you want him doing it. Nerlens will be just fine in a year but he will be gone Cal cant afford for him to stay. But Alex and Willie have no business going pro but if Coach Cal thinks it will cause him to lose Randle or Wiggins he will push them out the door and he should. I hope the best for Nerlens and hopefully our Cats will learn now they have to guard knowing Noel won't be there to erase their mistakes.

Have to admire this kid's attitude.

He'll still be a lottery pick, probably top 10 and maybe top 5-6. It's all based on potential anyway and he can recover from an ACL and still possibly play half an NBA schedule next year. At worst, they get him back for 2014-15. I can't imagine he'll come back with the risks associated. He could re-injure it, play poorly, any number of things that hurt his stock even more. Plus, if he goes now he can go ahead and get his clock started toward a second contract, which is where guys make their money anyway.

The bigger question is how this development affects Willie Cauley-Stein. He was considered a borderline lottery pick based on potential alone and now with the lion's share of playing time he could either work himself higher than that or perhaps show enough flaws that he comes back for one more season.

  • Chris he played with heart and passion that's why he's probably still going to be the number one pick. This was very devastating for him but he will be fine because he's a hard worker. This team should feed off Nerlens more now than ever and if they do we could still make some noise but if we don't we are NIT bound.

  • Derek Anderson:

@DerekLAnderson @nerlensnoel3 I'm headed to Kentucky NOW to help you get thru this. This will make u much stronger, physically & Mentally. C u Soon LIL Bro

@DerekLAnderson If it wasn't for the BBN support in 97 I never would have played 11 years in the NBA or won a NBA Championship. And should have a 97 one too

    Wow. What a gesture. Inspiring.

  • Good piece by Dana O'Neil on what this means for Nerlens Noel the PERSON, not the NBA commodity:

After injury to Kentucky Wildcats' star, let's not forget about Nerlens Noel the person - college basketball - ESPN

Everyone is talking about what Nerlens Noel's injury means for the one-and-done rule and Kentucky's tourney chances. How about we pause to think about the 18-year-old kid and the arduous and tedious process he now faces?
