  • This is...interesting. The timing is weird. We're in on some nice targets.

  • I don't think I've ever heard of this guy. Can't find anything online.

Definitely strange, if true, given that Fant and Yancey are coming this weekend.

  • Perhaps a juco or an older PSU player?

I'm mobile right now and my search-fu is a lil limited.

    But, while I'm atit...

Welcome to the BBN, Jevontay Smith!

  • Jeff wrote an article about his a couple of weeks ago. He performed well at a camp and UK offered shortly after.

His video is solid, but looks like a player that we could have waited a little longer on.

  • This kid's video is pretty impressive. He does it all. Looks like a taller Cobb. I'm a little surprised by the commitment as well but I think he can play.

  • Well im sure we will be taking around 3 WR's in this class dont you think? And couldne Fant play DB? I hope they still commit to us. Ole miss has 7 WR's n we have 1 so still love the chance of a commit this wkend

  • We didn't take Tyree Harris but then we take this guy. Both Tyree Harris and this guy were in camp at UK and coaches got to see them both close up.... I'm hoping that this guy is one that the scouting services just hasn't been to see yet... I'm going to trust the coaching staff on this one though..

  • I googled his name and came up with some posts about him from other camps, Auburn, Bama,. He was listed as a top performer in a couple of them, but it obviously didn't yield an offer from those schools. One of those I'll have to trust the coaches on. So far I have no complaints with their recruiting. After the banner '10 class, half of them didn't make it. I guess it's better to retain kids to play special teams and get a few marquee guys. Better than them not being here at all and creating problems with depth.

  • with Boyd, Fields and King all graduating this year, 3 WR's in this recruiting class as a minimum

I watched his highlights. Looked worth an offer to me. At worst he looks like a nice possession receiver, at best a good playmaker with the ball. Some of the he pulled off in hs def can't do in SEC, but the kid had good straighline speed and got the ball at its highest point. I thought his film looked good.

Are yu 100% sure this kid verbaled? Wondering why 247 dosent list himas committ yet? Thanks for the good news though! We need at least 3 to 4 wr in this class, hoping for Timmons, Yancey, Cooper, and a Smith type.

Jevontey actually just texted me to confirm. Had been trying him all day. Trying to get some additional comments from him.

    2013 Kentucky Football Commits

The 247Sports rankings are determined by our recruiting analysts after countless hours of personal observations, film evaluation and input from our network of scouts. Thanks for the early update jehamm!!! Looks like we landed a pretty solid kid in Smith..nice size at 6'1 180...4.46 40..looks like he has nice acceleration and possession type hands. Makes catches in traffic..which is what UK needed so bad last year. Factor in AJ Legree, Sweat, R.Cunningham,Collins, Robinson..we have the makings of a deep and talented wr corp going forward~!! Nice job bro!! Voted 4 ya!!

  • I do have a question about this. Why take this guy's commitment when scholarships are precious and they are sitting well with Cooper, Yancey, and Fant? I would think they could take this guy late in the signing period if they were looking for another player to pick up.

I think they plan to take at least three WRs but I don't know about four. Still plenty of room.

We saw him and he performed drills for us, in person. He was offered a scholarship and the staff can't wait forever. I can't see turning his offer down on the hopes that all three of the others will commit. I can see holding off on a kid in hopes that someone else will commit but when betting on how many out of a group will commit, it is almost always a certainty that at least one won't. Plus, the season will start in a week which will put considerable time constraints on the staff's ability to recruit until it is over. If the staff holds off and then others start committing in the middle of the season, they could be in a real bind. We're not in April anymore. Fall practice starts in one week.

    That's my two cents.

Good point, but I wish sometimes they would wait as better players become available/interested, and they may not have room for them. Smith could blow up this year though and become wanted by some other BCS programs. At this point, I just wish they would take players that had other BCS offers.

Just curious about this "At this point, I just wish they would take players that had other BCS offers." Why should our recruiters wait for other recruiters to think a player is good (i.e. with other BCS offers) before accepting a commit when our staff already likes what it sees?

Also curious, if they decide to wait, at what point should our staff decide they have waited long enough if the players they are waiting on haven't committed?
In this specific case, if theese three WRs hold out, how long should they wait for all three WRs to commit to UK before looking back to those who wished to commit previously?

  • Interesting prospect. He's clearly not as polished at Yancey, but this kid seems like a nice "project" that could turn into a player by the time he's a junior and senior.
