Newton

  • To me, the most discouraging part of his game involves the basic fundementals of the position. In 3 years, Newton has not improved his footwork at all. It's still horrid for an SEC QB in his 3rd year in the system. HIs lack of pocket awareness and presence is beyond obvious. He just doesn't look like a natural qb when he's back there..

    MinterWonderlnd

  • He looks scared, like he's so afraid of making a mistake that he is either holding the ball or rushing it.

  • I'm normally a pretty positive guy and don't like to post during games. Newton is disturbingly bad. That is all.

  • Newton lacks any type of qb instincts.

  • Play for the future and put Smith in, Newton has had a very legitimate chance and has gotten nothing accomplished.

  • Who is wishing for Moss now? He was a true QB and Joker ran him off.

  • I really feel sorry for the kid in some ways. He hasnt had a lot of help but he isnt getting any better or correcting his mistakes. I wonder how much real work he has put in since his freshman year? Last year after he lost the job it was probably easy to just slide. He didnt get many reps until bowl prep. Then heading into spring he basically gets the job because there was no one else to give it to.

  • To me, the biggest reason you take Newton out and leave him out is, he doesn't want to be out there. His body language speaks for itself.

    Katonic

  • You have to take him out. He just doesn't have what it takes.

This is a ignorant take, IMO. Why would we be wishing for a guy who had two years and couldn't beat the very guy we are complaining about to even become second string? If Moss had stayed he would have gotten a shot, that isn't the coach's fault it is his.

  • 3-17. That is just nuts. Where is Dusty Bonner when you need him! Seriously play Smith. Newton looks petrified . . plus he has no excitement. It almost looks like he goes in and wants to get the series over as quickly as possible. I am not for sure Joker is any better. Nothing but defeat in the eyes of the Wildcat coaching staff.

  • Exactly pb. I have rooted for Newt through all of this hoping he would come out of this funk but 9-37 or whatever it is now cant continue. Max needs to start 2nd half then work with him the next 2 weeks. Allow him to play Jax state and then be ready to finish up the season. That fumble by Newt was pathetic and CANNOT happen. On the bright side we are in better position than we were last year.

Can't argue that. I've supported Newton the entire time but at this point you have to make a change if for nothing else but to get a different look.

  • Smith has to play from here on out, regardless of the results. Newton is mentally done.

  • I think we likely will see Smith to start the half or at lest sometime in the 3rd quarter after the staff has had a further chance to realize that Newton isn't moving the team.

One thing I will say about the passing game today is this, USC's secondary is playing lights-out. Newton has put the ball on the money at least 4 or 5 times only to see a USC defender making a very good play on the ball. It's hard to move the ball through the air on a secondary like that especially when the upfront group is getting decent pressure.

My question is why have they given up on Clemons so early? He was getting some nice pickups early on and then they just started trowing it around for some reason.

  • I'm not blaming it ALL on Newton. We don't have ANY playmakers at all. What he does do wrong is squeeze the football too long and throws every pass as if he is trying to fire it through a brick wall.

i don't know if he ever had it mentally. i think you play smith...and let him and Towles fight it out next year too. Newton is the worst HS all-american i've ever seen

It's almost as though they blame it on him that we settled on a FG on the 1st drive. He has hardly seen the ball since then (where he essentially walked down the field).
