Newton: 'I need to be a passer'

  • Because we always seem to start out slow. We most always start the game flat for some reason or other.

  • I think Morgan can be a passer. He is not very accurate on the short and underneath routes right now, but throws a great deep ball. As he settles into the season, and the OL continues to gel and improve, he will hit those short and underneath routes as he gains confidence in his line. Right now, Newton is trying to get the ball out in a hurry and throwing lasers whether it's a 5-yard throw or a 40-yard throw. He will settle down and make the necessary adjustments, IMO. Joker wanting to run Morgan more will also help. If Newton can get out in space with the ball and get hit a little, I think that can settle him down and get his adrenaline in check. Ultimately, Newton is the QB and will be a good one. The game Saturday night could be the one where everything clicks for Newton and the offense. If so, the team will feel very good heading into the toughest stretch of games the program has faced in some time.

When did we stop throwing the ball in the second half? I remember a beautiful toss n catch in the second half. One could argue the running game opened up due to Morgan making throws (and more importantly catches made)

How the hell are people STILL bitching and complaining? Morgans stat line in the first half wasn't all that bad! With the exception of missing King in the endzone Morgan played ok. Roark holds onto that ball and Morgan was something like 9-18 104 yards and a TD. We looked good in the second half, and again had it not been for some misques in the first half and the F getting completley caught of guard we go into halftime up 23-13 or 23-7 if Guy wraps up one tackle.

Woodson IS going to help Morgan learn to better check progressions. Morgan will improve on his field vision, and to find the open man. You could tell that the game had slowed down for him in the second half and IMO will continue to do so. I want to be clear, I am not really high on Newton. I haven't been since his FR year, but he is capable of doing what is needed to win anywhere from 7-9 games IMO.

There are alot of things that need improving to get there and it's not all on #12. The playcalling (more screens, less reverses, quick slants and hitting RBs in the flats handout of the backfield) is a huge area of opportunity. (not Newtons fault) the WRs must improve on improve running running, and for the love of GOD catching the ball (not Newtons fault) the O line mist get healthy and keep improving continuity (not Newtons fault) The TEs must be involved in the passing game (not newtons fault) and maybe the Wild(insert last name if whomever runs it) into the offense to take some pressure of Newton (again, not Newtons fault)

I wanna be clear, I am not a big fan of Morgan Newton. I haven't since his FR year, bit he has enough areas of improvement as it stands to continue to pile on things that are not his fault.

Here's a crazy idea or thought...how about trying to support the football team rather year it down every week? Is it too much to ask to be positive about the things Morgan DID DO yesterday instead of the constant barrage of things he didn't and the massize list of things he's taking the heat for that are clearly not his fault?

Here's am even crazier idea...How about being happy and excited about the fact that we are 2-0 despite some struggles, that we are heading into a game with Loserville that we should without question win, and that we will more than likely be 3-0 and halfway to 6 wins and a 6th straight bowl game.

6 wins. Is that all the expectations fans have of UK football? Go to a bowl that no one cares about and get 6 wins? With the dumbing down of the schedule everyone should be happy with 6 wins.

I wouldn't be happy either. I have predicting 10 wins for the last 4 years. How is that for expectations?

    It is what it is.

Bitching and griping about it constantly wont get you ten wins. But it seems that some people actually think it will.

    I am not.

    2 things:

    1. What do you propose to do that would win more games?

Fire our coaches, right. Who are you going to replace them with? All those guys you're thinking of won't come here for even 4 million a year. If they can demand that kind of money they will go to the NFL or another big name program. You think if Auburn told Cal they'd match our 4 million a year it would work?

Remember the last time we looked for a coach? Brooks had to beg for Mitch to look his way and Mitch had to (thank goodness he did) because nobody else wanted it. UK is a tough job and eveyrbody knows it. As I have said multiple times... top 10 toughest coaching jobs. What we need to do is improve our brand... and we are slowly doing that.

How will they get the tallent here? It ain't in the state. Why would 4-5 star players leave Ga, Fla, S. Car, La, Tx, Ohio, etc and come to UK over their own state program that has years of tradition and championships?

I hear fans make these arguments all the time but they never have any real substance behind their arguments. Getting mad and cussin' don't make it better. If we make the moves we want to make (10 win seasons, etc) it will take 15-20 years of SLOWLY climbing the ladder. And yes... there will be some ups and downs along the way.

    2. How is having half of your schedule include top 25 teams year in and year out dumbing it down. Even those teams that are not top 25 are mostly top 50.

How will going to Texas, Fla Sate, etc and getting beaten help our cause?

Do I think we can get where we want to go? Yes. But... but it will take time, effort, and patience on behalf of everyone (fans especially) if we want to get there.

  • KY football fans always have the answer. Its always just hire they mythical coaching God that will suddenly make all things well at UK. My guess is they are a cult and secretly working on bringing Bear Bryant back from the dead to finish business at KY.

You bring up a good point and it goes back to the Bear Bryant years. Joker has a solid staff, I think he has surrounded himself with coaches who can win. There is a tremendous amount of UK "basketball" fans, and I'll call them fans but honestly I think they know very little about BB who love to critique UK football. I'm not sure why, but they love to take shots at the football team. I think we have come a long way in football the last 6 or 7 years esp. from where we were and how much better even the SEC has become. My God, this conference has practically destroyed the rest of the nation the last five years. There are teams (one in particular 60 miles west) who wouldn't win 2 ballgames on good years in this conference.

I've been happy with the last two recruiting classes. They maybe ranked near the bottom of the conference, but I feel we have developed and will continue to develop players. When you look at some of the big recruits for UGA, UF & UT they haven't made it to their soph. years before being tossed or losing eligibility. Everybody wants to look at recruiting rankings. The best way to evaluate teams and coaches should be after 4 to 5 years what did they accomplish from those rankings. UK has to get better, but I feel they are getting better and slowly but surely I feel we can start sneaking into the top 2-3 teams in the East. After that, who knows, hell we may play in Atlanta one day.
