Newton Needs to be in the QB mix

  • Hear me out now before coming unglued.

He is the QB with the most experience against SEC teams. He has beaten SEC team on the road. He is good enough to beat the likes of MSU, Vandy, Arkansas, and Samford.

He does not need to throw the ball 30 times a game to beat those teams. UK should be able to control those games with a good running effort without the need to throw 30 passes a game. Ball control and good defense.

Newton has had one really bad game against Florida and their speed but he won't see that kind of speed against MSU, and the team mentioned above. Newton may be a "bouncer" in horse talk. A horse that is great one race and bad the next. You never know. And he has experience. Smith is out, Whitlow is a freshman and so is Towles. Not looking at playing Newton is playing with fire if one of them gets hurt and can't play.

If the only reason you play Towles is to throw passes then don't you think MSU defense will figure that out and make passing impossible. And then what? You have burned his red shirt and he has lost so what is the point of the exercise.

Lets use the keep Joker logic for Newton. Let him play because he has given a lot to UK and is a senior and is a great guy. If it works for Joker it will work for Newton. And if he losses everyone can say, I told you so but if he might catch lighting in a bottle for that one game and win............................................My Oh My

  • Newton's only played in one game substantially. Why dismiss those results? FL didn't make him misfire so badly so often.

  • Yeah, that ship has sailed.

  • I won't watch if Newton is the QB. It's that bad to watch.

  • That would be a huge disservice to Newton. If he wants a future in football, it's at another position.

I think that ship has sailed also. I doubt Newton will make a living playing football. He might as a coach. As much as I dislike seeing Newton try and play QB, I'd rather have him taking snapps this year than to burn Towles redshirt.

    Derek Ramsey.

I agree with you though, I am not thrilled about burning Towles redshirt. However, it does kill a few birds with the same stone. Joker won't get torched for running Newton back out at QB, it gives Towles what he apparently wants, and with Smith down for the rest of the season the offense doesn't have to be completely scrapped.

I heard you out, but I think that you are not being realistic about the situation.

What in the world have you seen in recent history to think that UK can "control" games against MSU, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, UGA, and UT? Our run defense is still abysmal, giving up 192.8 yards per game. Our scoring defense is giving up nearly 31 points per game. With those numbers on defense, you want to rely on our running game (~119 yards per game) and the QB who is 33% with 3 interceptions on the year. You aren't dealing with reality.

Here are some numbers that may be of interest:

    MSU: 184.25
    Arkansas: 106.6
    Georgia: 250.4
    Missouri: 140.25
    Vandy: 169.75
    Tennessee: 177.40

These are the per game rushing yards for each of our remaining opponents, save Samford. You'll notice that, other than Arkansas, every other team has had more success running the football.

This seems to be rooted in the thought that removing the redshirt from Patrick Towles is a mistake. Doing so is not a mistake. It may be regrettable, unfortunate, or any number of other disappointing adjectives you care to use. However, it is necessary. Morgan Newton cannot play QB any more. He's is a great kid, I'm glad he's on the team, but he simply can't make the throws. Jalen Whitlow and Patrick Towles now have to play.

To think or suggest otherwise is foolish.

  • I would like to see both Whitlow and Towles in at the same time. D won't know who will get the snap, and plays will increase exponetially with both in. I think Louisiana-Monroe has done this in some games and its been pretty successful. Dual Wildcat!

  • I hope Morgan is still involved. Whoever plays QB is gonna go through some rough times. I've seen Morgan in the worst of times keep his head high and somehow maintain a positive attitude. A mature man who you want on your team!

    Oldschoolcat

  • I vote no for Morgan. Morgan has done what he can at QB. The results were not there. And I do not put it all on Morgan. The lack of success there for Morgan is for many reasons, of which I will not go into. Morgan has taken it for the team enough. He was thrown into the bowl game, he was thrown into the FL game. It's time for the coaching staff to do what is in the best interest of Morgan and the team and that is to find the position that fits Morgan and give him the opportunity to help his team. I have always supported Morgan each and everytime he has taken the field and I will do so at whatever position that may be in the future. It is clear with the coaches moving on to Towles and Whitlow that Morgan is out of the QB equation. With that being said, I sincerely hope this coaching staff finds a spot for Morgan on the field. He is athletic and a talented player. To have him standing on the sidelines and not contributing in some way with his ability is not doing Morgan or the team justice. This could be exanded to a couple of other players I feel the same way about, but that would be a whole other topic and not going there.

  • Guys, I am not saying to start him but to totally leave him out of the QB mix is a mistake. Like I said, if Towles plays thats fine and whenever Smith comes back that is fine to but if history repeats itself as it does at UK, playing Whitlow and Towles as some tamdum QB will get one or the other hurt and then Newton will have to be ready.

Hopefully that never happens but a good coach needs to expect the unexpected at UK

I think it's a mistake to not at least get him some QB reps in practice, because we're only an injury or two away from needing him. But he should be our last option, IMO.

  • I think we put a TB or WR at QB and go 90% run / wildcat before playing him at QB again.
