Nightmare in the trenches

“We had to win up front and we didn’t win up front,” Kentucky coach Joker Phillips said after Kentucky's 32-14 loss at Louisville.

  • The biggest negative I saw on offense was King STILL drops easy passes. I think I saw him drop two today...one over the middle and the other on the sideline.

  • Our defense didn't get better in the 2nd half. Charlie just showed that he's a gentleman and took his foot off the pedal. UofL could just about name the score.

  • I didn't see a gap in talent in this game. I thought our defense attacked from all angles with numerous blitzes?? Where was that philosophy in this game

  • Our defense played poorly. It will take a couple more games to see if it was poor schemes or poor play (out of position, leaving assigned area, bad tackling, etc). I believe it was the latter, which means the staff has to kick some butts or replace players who don't "bring it". Some have complained that we are too young...we may need to get "younger" by playing the more talented but less experienced players if the "older" guys (Sophs) can't turn it around IMMEDIATELY.

Then you didnt watch the game. Not one second of it if you didnt see the superior talent they had on both sides of the ball.

  • 1. I thought Cobble played a really solid game. 1 sack and 1 TFL with 5 total tackles. Seemed to create some piles at LOS. Rumph and Ukwu were really dissapointing to me. I'm beginning to think Rumph is just another highly recruited kid at UK that never is developed and will be solid but not great at all. To this point, Cobble (a 2 star kid) has outplayed Rumph hands down. Ukwu is just Ukwu...looks like Tarzan plays like Jane. Ukwu has no explosion and just occupies blockers at best.
    2. THe Lber spots were really the difference in the game. Brause/Simpson never attacked a gap or call carrier. We have taken such a big drop from Trevathan/Guy it is very dissapointing.
    3. I like our OL play. Kevin Mitchell was really solid...played better than Darrian Miller. West, Warford and Smith seemed to hold the middle of LOS well.

All in all, our back 7 were abysmal and lacked any level of athleticism to ever be SEC legit kids. For all the schollies we toss away at DBs/athletes...we have none in our back 7. It is worth letting the season play out as UL may be a legit top 15 team....but it appears like a 3-4 win season is where we are heading.

UK fan without blue glasses on. Bridgewater had 1 throw away and one drop by Eli or he would have been a perfect 21 for 21. We had 314 yards in the first half and played our backups for 20 of the 60 minutes played.

BTW, our best running back and our speedy starting WR charles gains didn't even play. biggrin

UK fan without blue glasses on? What does that even mean?

Bridgewater had an excellent game throwing to wide open wide receivers with absolutely no pressure whatsoever. As it turns out, not pressuring a quarterback or covering his WRs will result in him having a banner day. I will say that his throw down the sideline on the opening drive was a very good finesse throw, and the WR made a great catch.

TB may turn out to be the next great QB, but defense like that will make literally anyone look like a superstar. If he repeats the performance playing against a defense without its head up its own ass, I'll be the first to say he's among the best in the nation.

The agression was taken out of our 3-4 defense because the LBs were asked to drop in pass protection to protect our weak secondary rather than stay home and rush the passer and control their run gaps. Rushing the passer is secondary for the DL in a 3-4. Their primary job is as block eaters to free up the LBs to make plays.

IMO our inexperience at LB and the fact that the LBs were being asked to drop in coverage made our DL seem inadequate when it accually was the LBs and the coaching plan that was at fault.
