Noel and Anthony Davis' blocks record...

  • I've been on the record here as saying Nerlens Noel is the best shot-blocker I've ever seen at his stage. Many find that hard to believe after watching what Anthony Davis did this season, but I'm talking about as a high school senior. Noel is in a class by himself -- a once-in-a-generation type defensive player. The only guy I've ever covered who doesn't make me embarrassed to utter a Bill Russell comparison.

Will that carry over to college?

Here are some of the keys IMO to Noel having a shot to break AD's school record of 186 blocks this season:

    * Stay healthy. Like AD, a lean guy. Gotta avoid awkward falls and twists.

    * Stay out of foul trouble. Huge key with AD's success. Noel has shown same ability at HS/AAU level, but it's a whole different ballgame in college. I have also noticed that Noel has a tendency to go for the "highlight reel" rejection more often than Davis, who would simply deflect it and grab the rebound on many occasions. That style helps you stay out of foul trouble more than the "power rejection."

    * Team success. Play 40 games. Not a given by any stretch. If the Cats make another Final Four run, the opportunity will be there.

    * Pick up some blocks away from the basket. People didn't challenge AD regularly around the rim, so he picked up a good number of his rejections out on the floor and in help defense. That's a big question I have with Noel right now. There's no doubt in my mind he's the best post shot-blocker I've ever seen. Guys simply don't score on him -- ever -- in the lane. But can he get out and guard on the perimeter like AD did? Davis had that huge advantage in being a 6-2 guard a couple of years ago, so he had excellent footwork. I'll be interested to see if Noel can do that, too.

  • I always laughed at the thought of Noel being anywhere near the shot-blocker that Davis was but I think it's just because I just watched Davis do all of this and it's fresh to me still.

If he's even in the same league as Davis then we're going to be fine.

I loved that Davis would keep the ball in bounds instead of sending all of the shots 10 rows deep. I think Cal and the staff will work with him on that, hopefully, and make sure he knows that those plays lead to extra possessions for the team.

  • I can't fathom Noel breaking Davis record. I will be happy if he gets 150 total blocks. :)

  • Did he average 3.6 bpg in high school?

i just saw 12.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg, and 3.6 bpg. That doesn't seem very high.

Why are people saying he is one of the best shot blockers to come out of high school? Now did watch Nike Hoops Summit, and he did get nice blocks. 4 in that game.

    Just wondering.

The one where the guy drove to the rim, pulled up, shot faked and then tried to go up and under the defender and Noel came from the other side of the lane to block it out of bounds was ridiculous.

Shows what kind of force he can be defensively. Had four blocks in that game and didn't even play a hell of a lot. Only 24 minutes.

  • I think Davis really blossomed with the shot blocking last year. I will be pleasantly surprised if Noel turns out that kind of season, but it may be unreasonable to expect it to happen. He may be more foul prone than Davis. The surrounding pieces may not be as good at defending as those surrounding Davis- Doron Lamb was amazing last year and really was underrated on defense. There's a bit of a team effort in making this happen.

Guy was getting 8, 9, 10... heck, sometimes 12 or 13, in almost every AAU game last summer.

Eventually, people just quit challenging you in HS games IMO. It's hopeless.

So, maybe he doesn't break the record, but he might end up deterring as many shots. Know what I mean?

  • Davis benefited from playing in the post with Jones. He had a bunch of weakside blocks on the guys Jones was bodying up. Poythress is awesome but I don't think his defense as a freshman will be as good as Jones as a sophomore, so IMO Noel won't touch the record. But I will love watching him try!

    That's an interesting point.
