Nothing Else Matters

  • I know my opinion will be chastised by some, but I am a very conservative person, who concentrates on problem solving using my head instead of my heart. I believe this thing can be handled in a way to give Joker the very best shot possible, because I truly believe it is the most direct path to where everyone wants to get to. I believe the USCjr AD in his statements made available by another poster. I truly believe Mitch wants what we all want but knows it will not happen overnight or with just a new hire. To position this program to where it has the best chance to succeed, an integrated approach is what is needed. I have thought about this to a great degree. If this makes me hilariously delusional then so be it. I tend to believe it makes me wise, patient, and mature. I do not believe in hope and change.

  • Man, everyone has an opinion and none of us is perfect. You are not alone in your beliefs and don't let anyone change your mind.

Myself I try to look at the future and think what is the best Joker can do record wise 2 years from now. I still see a 6 win season at best and I think that is the best you will ever get from Joker and his assistants as well as the players.

I want a coach that can get us beyond the Capital City Bowl and into a real bowl game. I am not saying that Petrino is that coach but it is hard to say anything bad about his record as a coach and that is all that matters to me. He recruits the same kind of kids Joker recruits but he turns them into players. How he does it I don't know but he brings that "it" factor to Lexington that has been missing until Cal. came to town.

    And you are not delusional.

this has been discussed. Large contractual buyout. At Arkansas it was $10 million they would be due if another school wanted to hire him away. And it worked, he was not rumored to be a candidate for other jobs during his 4 1/2 yrs there. If he were not willing to sign similar language then your assertion about his motives of comming to UK would be accurate, and UK doesnt hire him.

He was happy at Arkansas, not chasing other jobs, he loves coaching in the SEC. At UK he could do the same at a program not that much dissimilar from Arkansas....without having to bang heads against LSU and Alabama.

^^^^^^^This is exactly the same thing that I was going to post.

I'd love to see BP on the UK sidelines!

I actually agree with you. We won't be able to see what Joker will really be able to do for another 4-5 years, if even then. Kentucky football has been in such a hole for such a long period of time that any movement to the top 25, in an capacity, is going to take years, if not decades. And there will be steps backward along the way.

My personal opinion is that we should give Joker a good shot at it, not 3 years. My minimum expectation was 6-7, but I'm realistic in that it probably won't happen. My other opinion is that if we don't give Joker his full shot and fire him after this year that we should absolutely do everything we can to hire Bobby Petrino.

Not that much dissimilar from Arkansas?

Arkansas has a 10% higher all-time winning percentage than UK (58% to 48%). They've been to nearly three times as many bowl games as UK ... with nearly twice as many bowl wins. Arky has 8 times as many all-time conference championships as UK with multiple SEC West championships and multiple appearances in the SEC Championship game. They've had 12 10+ win seasons while UK has had 2.

While Arkansas is not historically an SEC power to the level of the Bamas and LSUs ... their football history and tradition is still immensely better than UK's.

Nope, not that much dissimilar. Are they better, sure. Bottom line is Arkansas football has more of a resemblence to UK than they do the power of the conference (Bama/Auburn/LSU/Florida/Georgia/Tennessee).

They are not among the elite of the SEC, like UK. They do not produce much homestate talent to lean on for recruiting, like UK. In a small state away from the power centers of the conference, like UK. Good but not fantastic fanatical fanbase following, like UK.

  • I see what you're saying, JHB. I don't know if I agree with you- I would call Arky middle of the road between us and Bama. I would give us more if a similar situation to Missouri or Mississippi State, just judging over my lifetime of watching. I do think that Arky is closer to us than they are to Bama though, so it's not an awful comparison.

  • I don't know if anyone has brought this up. But there is a very strong connection for Petrino and UK. Mike Summers and Joe B. Hall.
Summers is where he wants to be and is very close to Petrino. He could have left Arkansas many times but chose to stay with Petrino until UK came calling. As you know Summers is married to Joe B's daughter. Don't know how much influence Joe B has but I bet he'll push for Petrino so his daughter stays close. JMHO.

  • I'm all for bringing in Petrino at this point. My only worry is that he'll be offered better jobs. I'd say Dooley is probably out at UT. Will they offer Petrino? The Auburn job might be opening as well. Would Petrino want to go back to the West though. As long as Saban and Miles are in place Auburn will be playing 3rd fiddle in their own division. I have no doubts that Petrino at UK or UT could elevate the programs to compete with UF, USC and UGA. At UT he could probably even surpass them. I'm sure he wants to continue coaching in the SEC. But can we beat out UT for his services? At this point I'm probably gonna have to say no especially with Barnhart as AD.

c'mon, he hired someone he was in or had been in a personal relationship to a job he controlled. Do you know how many coaches all across the country in every sport have hired sons onto their staffs who more than likely were not the most qualified candidates for their positions? How many fathers hired their boys, Bob Knight, Steve Spurrier, Paterno, Beamer, Pitino, Bowden....you going to tell me every one of them were the most qualified and would have been hired if their last name were different?

Oh, and didn't Mitch get into some trouble by the way he attempted to hire his daughter to a graduate assistant position within UKAA last year?

Petrino is the very best coach that UK could ever hire at anytime in our recent history. Heck yeah he has warts, if he didnt there would be zero chance he would consider us. Ask any national college football writer or analyst and they think the match is beyond perfect....think I've heard Bruce Feldman say so already, and Paul Finebaum, and Clay Travis, and Stewart Mandell. A terrible program in need of a great coach, a great coach in need of rehabbing his image and currently unemployed....a logical fit, for everyone but some moralistic UK fans, questionably biased local media, and of course our pious mountain climbing AD.

But none of your examples had sex with their hires. Its good to know who are the sluts on here. lol

I actually agree with this, but it won't happen.

I would, however, make one STRONG recommendation to Joker- Get rid of Minter.

I both agree with Suchy and that it won't happen. As to Minter, I'm waiting to see. Last year, the defense improved a lot over the course of the year. So far this year, it's awful. I'll give him a chance to turn things around the rest of this year.

I'm more sold on Coach Phillips not being able to cut it than Minter. The defense last year was almost a "bright spot" in an otherwise disappointing year. It is the overall steady decline is wins and overall preperation that has me concerned.

Can't win the Kentucky Derby with a pony. Talent is really deficient on the defensive side of the ball. Some promising young players, but our LB's are really struggling, and the dline has not developed physically like it should have. I cut the dline a little bit of slack because, bad LB's really make the dline look worse. If they are eating up blocks but the LB's are unable for whatever reason to fill the gap, fight off blockers, and make the tackle less than 7 yds down the field, people scream at the dline. Their main job is gap control, and to eat as many blocks as possible to keep the LB's free.
