Notre Dame to Big 12?

  • I always thought ND should totally join the Big East. All their other sports are already league affiliated. The FB team would be almost guaranteed the title year in year out, which would set them up for a BCS bowl/Nat'l title shot. It keeps their travel costs low and natural rivalries intact. (although who isn't a rival of ND?).

All the commissioners of the other power conferences (SEC, B12, B10, ACC, and PAC) should come together on the Notre Dame football issue. They should all agree that nobody will offer Notre Dame conference affiliation in any other sports unless football is also included. This would leave ND 2 options. Either stay in the Big East in all sports except football, or join a major conference in all sports, including football.

If that won't/can't happen, then all the conference commissioners should be sure to exclude any independent teams from the new 4 team playoff format. Even further, I'd like to see all the coaches and AP writers refuse to vote for any independent teams in the polls. They should also be excluded from participation in any existing bowls. If Notre Dame, BYU, Army, and Navy want to remain independent they can go form a new bowl just for the top 2 independent teams each year.

Personally, I think independence across the board would serve the top 60-70 NCAA programs well. I am positive that UK would benefit from operating independently in basketball. It would open up all kinds of flexibility in football scheduling, too. If we are all honest, we have more in common with West Virginia than South Carolina, Indiana than Auburn, or Illinois than LSU. Independence would allow the epic MBB, WBB, and football game weekend that Cal suggested a few days ago with a school like UNC. I know it is a pipe dream, but I do understand where Notre Dame is coming from by trying to keep their independence. If UK could formulate their own football schedule without the existence of conferences, can't you see us playing more flagship regional games like Illinois, Indiana, West Virginia, the occasional Ohio State or Michigan, as well as the Viriginia Tech and Purdue type opponents? We would still keep rivalries like UT, UL and Vandy as well as the new addition Missouri. Kentucky is in a unique geographical position for the SEC, and having some semblance of northern connection in football would serve us well.

You guys remember when I posted that ND would likely be moving conferences? Remember what I said about the acc wanting them for all sports except football? Some of you bashed me. Guess who i sat next to on the way back from the final four? Mike Brey.

Just curious: Why didn't you name Brey at the time when a couple of us asked what coach you were talking about? Why wait 2.5 months to reveal the name?

That would be a disaster. I'm not sure you could give away tickets for UK games against Illinois and IU. Without the SEC, UK becomes a MAC-type football program with a quickness.

ahem, sounds like the rumors of late last week are dying down, and the prospects of the Doamers joining the B12 or ACC soon were not true. Understand the frustration many have with them, but in theory if you exclude them you will also be excluding military service academies - not a smart political decision.

The Irish ought to be lumped in with the other independents and the non-power conferences - if you finish in the top 4, you might get in the playoff alongside 3 conference champs from the B12/SEC/B10/Pac12/ACC. Maybe.

By the way - since we are going to a playoff, can everyone please drop the garbage "Football Bowl Subdivision"/"Football Championship Subdivision" designations, and go back to what we all knew and were comfortable with: D-1, D-1AA?
