OK, here's why we WIN on Sunday

  • From a Rick Minter interiew yesterday-

Kentucky hopes its strength is in its defensive line, which returns starters Ukwu and tackles Mister Cobble and Donte Rumph as well as regular Taylor Wyndham. They want to keep the quarterback guessing on Sunday at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

They're going against a Louisville offensive line that has three sophomores (who all played significant minutes last season as true freshmen). The Cardinals allowed 41 sacks for 232 yards last season, ranking 110th out of 120 major-college teams in terms of protection.
"We'd like to think we can hold our own up front, match up physically, maybe better than we did last year at times," Minter said. "Our D-line's full-grown men. We expect them to play extremely well on Sunday."

OUR FRONT 4 MUST DECIDE THIS GAME!!!!!!! THEY CAN DECIDE THIS GAME!!! UK has jurniors and seniors with a ton of experience on the DL going up a group of young pups on the UL Oline that gave up a ton of sacks against EVERYBODY last year. There's no reason that difference alone can't win this game.

I agree. Cobble and Rumph are really only entering their second years with significant playing time. UKWU was also BEAT UP last year.

If those guys hold up and provide pressure it could be a long day for UofL.

If the reports are true re: our o-line then we could be in pretty good shape.

IMO if our d-line and o-lines hold up and we win the turnover battle we win the game.

  • Plus if Bridgewater played like he did against NC State (a Mike Archer defense) he is prone to throw an int with pressure on him.

  • And this:

“This is as healthy as we have been in 25 years of coaching,” Phillips said after Thursday’s practice. “A lot of that has to do with us being a little bit more athletic, a little bit stronger."

  • I love it minter. This is an excellent post. IF, and a big IF, kevin micthell is greatly improved like the staff says, then Zach west, who i love coming in this year, is the weakest, relative, link on the OL, the DL has all the makings of a dominate OL, like 2008, I think we have a legit shot in this game. This game is won in the trenches. #weareuk # dayafterlouisvillehateday #2daysbeforekicklouisvillesarseday #legoo #sorryforthehashtags biggrin

  • I think the linebackers are going to be the X Factor. They have to contain Bridgewater. The line will likely get pressure on Teddy, but can the linebackers and corners step up and prevent those long runs?

  • Also the weather may make it harder for UL to pass.....this may help out our defense as well since passing will more than likely be our weakness.

  • Football comes down to the LOS. If UK's OL protects Smith and the DL gets pressure on Bridgewater, the 'cats win. It's that simple.

  • Controlling the line of scrimmage has always gone a long way in winning this game. What I remember from last year's game:

Morgan Newton running for his life and Dominique Brown gashing UK's run defense.

Nope, it's the other way around. Rain will help our passing game. The defender doesn't know the play on a slippery field. Remember those 4 infamous words from Tirico on espn when we beat florida state in the monsoon? "Ragone rolling, throwing, TOUCHDOWN!!!"

We all assumed ragone was still roadkill!
