OT: NFL Free Agency

  • Just wanted to get some chatter started. I'm a Bengals fan, and I'm hoping to see us make a few savvy moves over the next couple days to shore up some spots. Love the re-signing of Gilberry. Great rotation guy, and we got him fairly cheap.
    Would love to see them take a shot at Nnamdi. Where he is in his career, he has Zimmer project written all over him. But more pressing needs are on the roster. Also wouldn't mind if we signed Mike Goodson, who I believe visited. Gives us a nice 1-2 at RB.

    Side note: Denver just signed DRC. Our boy Woodyard getting some serious help! Can't believe they got Welker for the price they did. Kudos, Elway

    Love to hear what you guys have to say on the topic for your team or in general.

  • Well, my 'Hawks have been busy.

    Traded this year's 1st and 7th plus next year's 3rd for Percy Harvin, then signed him to a big new deal at 6 years/$67 million. I'm kind of a draft nut so I hate to see them give up draft picks, but they weren't going to be getting a player of his caliber at 25 anyways, so I'm on board with the move. He makes the offense a ton more dynamic and, as long as he stays out of trouble/drama, will be an awesome pairing with Russell Wilson for foreseeable future.

    They also picked up Cliff Avril from the Lions to be a fill-in/replacement for Chris Clemons while he recovers from his January ACL tear. Most people had him as one of the top edge rushers in Free Agency and he's coming off a 9.5 sack year under the franchise tag (roughly $10 million). We got him on board for 2 years/$15 million, which is a great deal, IMO. The big concern with him was how much his numbers were aided by Detroit's great DT pair of Suh and Fairley, but its less of an issue in Seattle's scheme, which will keep him single blocked 90% of the time. He's an ideal physical/athletic fit for the Leo position.

    Only other move, besides tendering some minor RFA's, was cutting Leon Washington in the post-Harvin trade shakeout. He's still a great return guy (Pro Bowler in '12), but Harvin is also elite in that regard and he was due around $3 million, which is far too much to keep him around as a #3 RB.

    Going forward, I'd expect a couple of cuts (Obamanu at WR being the most obvious) and continuing to look for a trade partner for Matt Flynn. They're also still in the market for a 3 tech DT and possibly a WLB and DB depth.

    It's a good time to be a Seahawks fan though. Finally. biggrin

    would be nice if they could swing a deal with Washington for a lower cost.

    hate the idea of them continuing to use Harvin on returns. he is talented at it, you bet. however your investment in him is too much now and he is to important to want you are trying to accomplish on offense to risk having him injured on returns, especially with his head injury history.

    It appears that way (and yes I was being kind). Boldin was a big, big loss. Ellerbe leaves a gaping hole in the middle, and Kruger was a great pass rusher. If, IF, they can get Reed back, that would be huge (obvious), seeing as how they also cut Pollard.

    I am still not sold on the whole Flacco deal. I know you had to reward the guy, and frankly, he was lights out in the playoffs. But is Joe Flacco elite? I'm not buying it.

    I'm just hoping the Bengals can make a few savvy moves (not holding my breath). The division is opening up for us.

    I'm thinking they might only be using him on KR, with someone else on PR. Maybe Tate, although I don't think that worked very well the last time we tried it.

    I agree its risky, but he seems like he's a pretty tough guy despite his lack of size and, with the D we have, we won't be returning that many kicks anyways. biggrin

    I'd love to bring Leon back on a cheap deal though. He's a talented player with enough left in the tank to help. That contract was just too much for the PT he was going to get. It sounds like they cut him as a favor to him, to let him test the market and pick his spot. Word is they turned down a potential trade to Tampa because he wanted to test the market, so there has to be some mutual respect there. If he doesn't find more money anywhere else, I'd like to think he'd be back next year.

  • Kruger is not that great. I donot blame Baltimore for letting him go at that price. The guy is not an elite pass rusher. The Bengals want make any flashy moves I think they are content to draft well and sign there best players they develope themselves. I wish we could get some more weapons for Dalton but it will be in the draft. Maybe Beanie wells but he has been a relative bust so far.

  • Would not be happy with Beanie. Waste of cash. I do like that we may go after Mike Goodson.
    Ted Ginn visited. Not sure exactly where he fits outside of special teams, but for the right price....
    Was hoping for a safety, but that appears to not be happening. Just hope we sign Andre back. Hated to lose Pat Sims and Manny Lawson.

  • I'm a Browns fan. I want to separate three thoughts.

    1. I was not happy when they announced a switch to a 3-4. Inconsistency breeds defeat. They need to pick a coach and support him for the long haul.

    2. I love what they have done to this point. Their two biggest expenditures were on the defense. You need a physical defense in the AFC North. Kruger and Desmond Bryant are two guys that are going to give you 110%. It doesn't matter when their contract is up. I still think they need to sign a pass catching TE like Fred Davis and a veteran corner. Outside of Haden, our corners are terrible. A safety like Rhodes next to TJ Ward would be huge. Also need a guard.

    3. For the draft, I see Cleveland targeting Womack or Milliner as of now.

  • Nice thread. However, being a Packers fan it is mostly a mute point for me since they tend to shy away from FA like the plague. Love to see us get a bigtime OT or cornerback or RB. But highly doubtful.

    I'm not as high on the Kruger signing (I like him, but I think you guys overpaid) but I really like Bryant. I was really hoping the 'Hawks would find a way to bring him on board. Having a pair of really active DE/DTs (Dockett kicked in to 3 tech a fair amount, if I recall) was key to that scheme working for Horton in Arizona, and Bryant plays both the run and the pass at a pretty high level. Rubin, Taylor, and Bryant would a really tough 3 man front to run on, if either of the big guys can kick out to End.

    I think Milliner makes a lot of sense, if he makes it to 6. Its hard to say how the top five is going to shake out, so he could very well be there though. I love Warmack, but can they afford to take a G that high? That's a ballsy first pick for a new regime. Think there is any chance they cut bait on Weeden if Geno is there at 6?

    That has to be unbelievably frustrating as a Bengals fan.

    According to a couple different places, they're sitting at roughly $35 million under the cap, and have not been a factor at all with any of the tier one free agents. Not that its a great crop this year, but they could have certainly filled some needs. Still a long way to go this offseason, but if I was a Bengals fan, I'd be restless.

    Am I right that Mike Brown is the both the Team President and Acting GM?

  • I'm not completely sold on Kruger. I'm afraid he ends up being a product of Baltimore's system and he only did it one season. He will have a great defensive line in front of him and he did finish the season with 13.5 sacks. He's an effort guy. You can't teach work ethic. Look at Randall Cobb.

    We will just have to wait and see. The thing is, the NFL had made it to where you have to spend X% of your salary cap or it is divided amongst the other teams anyway. So they HAD to spend money. They had the most available. It gives them great flexibility to lock up some of their younger, talented players too though.

    I think Phil Dawson is undervalued. I think letting Josh Cribbs go was the right thing to do. Paying a kick returner that kind of money is ridiculous now given the new rules.

  • If Alex Smith can be post-Singletary Alex Smith then the Chiefs will make the playoffs this season...other than QB their team was pretty good.

    Could be the second year in a row that a team goes from #1 pick to postseason.

    Adding D Robinson and DRC to go with Brandon flowers was a fabulous move, especially since Denver is loaded. I agree with you, Josh, and unlike Indy the year they gained the #1 pick, KC was not nearly as bad as their record last year. Pieces are there to be a pretty damn good team. I won't be shocked, and I may even be slightly disappointed, if the Chiefs don't make the playoffs in an AFC that is considerably weaker these days.

  • There is a reason that KC used their resources on re-signing their own players: Eric Berry, Dwayne Bowe, Jamaal Charles, Tyson Jackson, Brandon Albert, Glen Dorsey, Javier Arenas. I mean, are you kidding me? Those are all young, talented players.

    As a Browns fan, it killed me to see the Colts go from Peyton Manning to Andrew Luck. Meanwhile, Cleveland is going through a quarterback every two years.

    As far as Flacco goes, everyone was wondering if Flacco was the right guy to lead that team mid-season. He runs off about eight to ten good games and all of a sudden is making the most money in the league. The contract was way too much in my opinion, but that's where the NFL is now. If the Ravens hadn't given it to him, then another team (the Browns) would have.

    also about the Broncos. i get asking Dumervil to take a pay cut from his $12 million due next season. he did restructured for $8 million and stayed with the Broncos. a smart move for him.

    but i guess i don't get why they didn't even attempt to squeeze $1-2 million out of Peyton. is he untouchable, the monster pile of $20 million he is due?

    just seems odd that's all. i would think if they asked Dumervil to do it for the betterment of the team whats wrong with asking your franchise QB to tighten the belt a little for the betterment of the team.
