I may be mistaken, but I believe this is one of those years where UK is faced with either extending Joker's contract or letting him go. If they keep him and don't extend his contract (he has three years left), IMO, they are setting him for further failure.

Wow? His job security has increased because of injuries? What does that say about the state of the program? Why do you think our guys get injured so much here? It's because we ask them to play as true freshman/sophmores, with underdeveloped bodies, against RS jr's and seniors week in and week out. I'm not blaming Joker for the injuries, but the fact that we have such a young team, every year, and continue to get injured is more of an indictment against our staff's abilities than it is an excuse.

IMO this is very real and could very well be how it plays out. In regards to the fan base, more season tickets will not be renewed and attendance at an all time history low starting the season.. And from there there it will go one of two ways: 1) In 2013 team comes out, competes and wins 6, 7 or 8 games and fans come back. 2) In 2013 its more of the same and coach is released.

It may hurt us in the short-term if we stick with Joker, but if Mitch thinks Joker is the guy and Joker DOES end up leading us to improved seasons, then the past becomes moot. The long term will by far outweigh the short term. I know some of you don't think there should be a long-term, but Mitch has to take into account the progression. Are we really going down or is the youth a sign of rising from the ashes?
Also, we won't get any bond help until February at the earliest, but what if an announcement comes down that we are expecting the bond to go through? That is going to increase interest and people are going to donate/renew season tickets anyway.
Look at it this way, the fans at Commonwealth Stadium this year, that renewed their tickets, have been GREAT. I really think we have a great base of football fans. I don't expect the decline in sales to be as significant next year if they stick with Joker. I think a lot of those were weeded out prior to this year. That's not a good thing, but it is something to consider.

I think this is an excellent point. I'm in the new coach camp-- but only if we can bag a big fish. I'm not for switching for the sake of switching. I'm for switching because if you hire the right guy, it can make a huge difference in the health of the program.

Some people here are haters. That cannot be changed. They are that way in life I assume. Listen, I grew up with Joker playing here and loving him. He loves this place and frankly I will always think well of him and his love for UK. Here are the facts.
1. Football keeps the lights on for so many of UK sports that they are too time consuming to list here. 2. With dropping revenue, the improvements for any and all sports are scaled back or put on hold. 3. Kentucky has never instituted any major investment and improvements to the football program here. 4. Kentucky enjoys its revenue from the SEC and its lucrative contracts with networks and immediately funnels that back toward other sports or the university as a whole. 5. Kentucky football is treated like a single mother who holds down 2-3 jobs and brings home the groceries and food for her children. She never indulges in herself and her well being.
Frankly, it is time to invest in the game that makes things happen here at UK. Basketball will always be our calling card. But, as a founding member of the Southeastern Conference, at least be active in attempting to improve the conference's signature sport.

I agree. Good post.
There are too many other posts on here to quote so I am just replying to several things.
We will find out Saturday if this team is improving. Part of me wants to believe they are after the last two weeks. Having said that, each of the last two weeks were trap games for our opponents. They slept walked through the first half and woke up a little in the second half. Especially USC. Florida is not as good as USC. If MIss St comes in here and beats us by 20 then this season is more than likely done. If we can keep the game competitive then I do believe this team is improving and IF we can pull out 3-4 more wins (Ole Miss, Ark, Vandy, and Samford are the targets) then I believe Joker will get another year and I will be okay with that.
What I won't be okay with is only winning 1-2 more games and having Joker brought back. I keep hearing people say "You have to give him time to win with his players" or "we just have a young team". What those people fail to realize or simply choose to ignore is that Joker was named 'Coach-in-waiting" so that there would not be any instability in the program. Recruits knew coming in who the coach would be. And lets not kid ourselves, the recruiting now isn't really any worse than it was. We were lucky with a couple of classes in the fact that several players turned out to be a little better than people thought they would. Tamme, Woodson, Burton, Little, Johnson, Woodyard, were all 3 star players who turned out to be pretty good players. Joker is still getting some 3 star recruits and sprinkling in a 4 star here and there. Two big factors going against Joker now is an 8th conference game and a rapidly rising Louisville program. When Brooks was here, U of L was on the decline when Petrino left and we were simply better than them. Now it is completely reversed and we are the team in decline. Let's not forget they could have beaten us by 50 had Strong wanted to. And adding that 8th conference game has eliminated one of our "guaranteed wins" that were on the schedule every year. And speaking of guaranteed wins, you think UK is looking forward to going to Nashville next year to play WKU?
Someone said "empty seats wont matter". Wrong. They will. A two win season this year and I can guarantee you that you will see another drop in ticket sales. The "old farts" that always came to UK games are, to be blunt, starting to die or not be able to come to games any more. It happens when you get old. The younger generation of fans doesn't necessarily care more about football than the older folks do. We (the younger generation) are just not as willing to keep pouring money into a program for a university that has basically laughed in our faces for the past 50 years about being seriously committed to football. We would rather stay home and have friends over and watch from the comfort of our homes on our 70" TV's so that we can change the channel when things get out of hand and not have to fight traffic leaving the game. We are tired of paying the salaries of those responsible for putting a watered down product on the field. We don't have to win 10 games every year. We would just like for the team we support and pay for to be competitive. Win say 7 games a year on average. We understand there will be years where you may be down and win 4 or 5 games. As long as it's not 10 plus years in between bowl appearances we will be okay with it. We just want the University to care about the program as the fans have for the past 50 years when they have shown up and supported the worst of teams.
These are different times and different people. Saturday is a big game for UK. At home against an undeated ranked opponent. 15 years ago it would have been a packed house. Saturday, well with forcast of 55 degrees and early rain on top of being opening weekend at Keeneland, I'd say they will be lucky if there is 40,000 people there if the forcast holds. That isn't the direction the program should be going in.

It was quite amusing having been at the game to see an attendance reported of 49,500. I about ran off the road laughing on my way home. Normally you can get away with that because the lower bowl is full. Not even close on Saturday. I would say if they were lucky there were 35,000 in attendance, and that is pushing it. 30,000 is closer to reality.
Yeah, nothing is wrong and the program is headed in the right direction. Keep telling yourself that UK. The more you lie about the situation the worse you are making it. Even Patrick Towles couldn't fill the seats.

I noticed the attendance on television and no way it was almost 50,000 there. Maybe that amount of tickets were sold but many didnt show and I was really sad to see it that empty. I wrote in another stream that the changes needed at UK starts at the top not at the coaching level. I do think a change is needed at the coaching spot but not in the middle of the season and whether or not many people agree or not I dont think it would be fair to Joker or the players. I also think the Athletic Department needs to put a contract out that a big named coach couldnt refuse it and also upgrade asap the facilites so that big named coach could use that like Cal uses the basketball programs facilities. I think that all that is needed to fix the football program but its going to be difficult to pull in that coach even with that terrific contract and new facilities we can all hope.

Ok, What Happens When Mitch Says This....
