On Second Thought: Miss. State

Kentucky endured another rough day on the gridiron, losing to Mississippi State and perhaps losing Patrick Towles in the process. CatsPause.com breaks it down.

  • At least Whitlow gives a little semblence of an offensive game. That's more than we had last year. I can't even imagine and don't want to imagine Whitlow getting hurt and being forced to play Newton. It just pains me to think of 2011s offense all over again. What a nightmare. I actually feel sorry for Joker and Sanders, at this point.

In saying that, I still question alot of there play calling. UKs O just isn't good enough to run up the middle for no yards or 1 yard on 1st down and put themselves in 2nd and 3rd and long situations. They must find a few plays they can rely on to get them 5-6 yards on 1st down and not waste any plays. At this point, just moving the chains and keeping the defense fresh is key to having any chance at pulling an upset in SEC games.

  • Agree with the play selection. If I am going to trying and power run it up the middle, I would at least keep the ball in George's hand. He runs with authority and power.

  • I understand trying to run the ball in the first three quarters. What pissed me off was trying to run with 5 minutes left. At that point in the game it's time to open up the playbook.

  • Why didn't Mobley play yesterday?

What about Mobley? He should definitely get more touches, but I wonder if his attitude is having an effect on his playing time.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and it has made all the difference (Frost).

Don't know what's going on there, but I too would like to see Mobley get more touches.

  • Why on Earth would you all question the coaching staff? I mean, they have complete control of the situation. I really hope you can feel the sarcasm coming through your computer screen. It took all of one whole play for me to be able to see that Towles simply looks like a QB that is ready to play. Will he make mistakes? Yep. But good Lord who hasn't? On the very first play when he faked the handoff and rolled out he just simply looked like he knew what he wanted to do and when it wasn't there he ran for a couple of yards. Then all he did was go 5-5 for 71 yards and a TD. Are you freaking kidding me?! It took them this long to get him on the field when Smith was out? Look, Whitlow is a good player. But he won't even be in the same class of quarterback as Towles will when its all said and done, if he stays healthy. It absolutely blows my mind that this wonderful coaching staff a lot of you so vehemently defend can't see this. Or maybe I should say, don't want to see this?

The coaches say that they want to run a pro style offense. They say that's what it takes to win consistantly in the SEC. So wouldn't it make the most sense that if that is what you want to play, that you would play the QB that best fits your style of offense? Case in point #1 - Morgan Newton vs. Ryan Mossakowski. Again, we want to be a pro style offense yet we play the dual threat QB who couldn't complete a pass to a receiver with me defending him. Case in point #2 - Jalen Whitlow vs. Patrick Towles. Again, we want to run a pro style offense. Max Smith is doing that nicely and he goes down, so we turn to another dual threat who hasn't been able to pass very well at all - in Whitlows own words. So, what are we to believe? The coaches are in practice every day. And you are going to tell me that after the small display we got from Towles on Saturday that Whitlow is more capable of running this offense? It's completely dumbfounding to me that this is the case! If I were Jim Bunning I would be peeved off too. Another example of great coaching was on Towles 2nd possession. 3rd and roughly a foot. MSU is lined up in basically a goalline defense. Pressure is coming. You have a 6'4" 245lb. qb and what do you do? We hand the ball off 4 yards in the backfield trying a misdirection no less. Good grief, can you not just run a QB sneak?! Or even hand it off to the fullback, or if you are goint to hand it off to the tailback at least run it up the gut! And if we run another 3-5 yard pass on 3rd or 4th and 10-15 yds, I just don't know what to say. On Towles very first posession it is 3rd and long and I'll be darned if we don't call a play where we throw the ball beyond the first down marker. Its freakin amazingj! But no, this isn't the guy we need running our offense. We need to have the dual threat guy in there where we call the extremely overused bubble screen on 3rd and 10. But please, lets keep defending the coaches. They obviously know what they are doing.
