  • I agree WCS looked really good the 1st half and showed some good things on offense and played really well on defense. Im a true believer when it comes to Wiltjer now, I had some doubts about how much he has improved from last year but I saw a lot of that improvement although it was the Blue/White game. He looks more confident and quicker with his feet, last year he looked at times he was moving in slow motion. Overall I was pleased with the freshmen especially with Noel/WCS blocking shots. We have a heck of an athlete in Goodwin. PS: I hardly noticed how Harrow played and thats not a good sign.

  • This team has SOO much potential.

Let's see how much they tap it by end of the year.

  • Cal is gonna have to work some of his usual magic with Harrow, Noel and the team as a whole. I have confidence it will happen. No idea where that confidence comes from, right. cool

  • For the first scrimage it wasn't bad. Did what it was supposed to do, it shows Cal where we need to improve. Work on them Coach!!

I was impressed by Harrow's quickness and defense, he didn't stand out as a star scorer but I thought he was just fine. If he can consistantly put the ball in the hands of our scorers and play solid D then he's a perfect PG for us. He was an interesting bit in the All-Access too

  • Seems like Noel needs a lot of work to get up to speed. I'm just going from the box score though.

He looked a tad out of shape still, and seemed discouraged on offense. I imagine him being close full offensive potential by SEC play. He will be tough to score over from the get go

    Drewd33

  • Why no mention of Goodwin? This guy always gets overlooked and may end up being our leading scorer.

    BlueGhost

  • Goodwin is a scoring machine. He goes all out all the time. He'll D people up too.

Noel did look a little out of shape. Looked a little soft at times too. I think Cal will get that out of him. WCS is aggressive though. Wiltjer can flat put it in the basket. We already knew that. Jon Hood looked good offensively. We'll have to see though what he can provide defensively. This team has much better depth than I thought. We've got 8 guys that can play but those 8 guys can move around and create several different lineups. Cal is good at finding which lineups work.

  • So much potential is correct.

I can see this team as better than last years team... I was impressed!

    Wow!

I can also see an 8 or 9 player rotation being necessary to win the NCAA Championship...

These guys are good... err... great!

  • Honestly, I don't see how you don't start WCS.. IMO, he's a more skilled offensive player and better rebounder than Noel and is just about as good on the defensive end.. I could see a starting lineup of:

    PG-Harrow
    SG-Goodwin
    SF-Poythress
    PF-Wiltjer
    C-Cauley-Stein

    Off the bench:

    Noel / Mays / Hood

    bluecatntn

  • cal is not going to start cauley stein. For one noel was the top recruit for a reason why dont we let him catch up and see were hes at. Noel had a near triple double not to shabby for a guy people r down on all of a sudden. This kid will be beasting before u know it. Cauley Stein will get his minutes but Noel will start bank it.

I guess I was as impressed with WCS as you were but I was thinking how does Cal get both Noel and WCS in the starting lineup at the same time. I dont really think that will happen and Im sure that Noel will be the starter. He is behind on conditioning and remember that the other players had the summer practices that Noel didnt. Its going to take awhile for him to catch up but again WCS looked pretty darn good even though it was a scrimmagerockon

Once he figures out setting his teammates up he will be my favorite player. Absolutely love his tenacity and willingness to attack the basket.

  • Agree that WCS wont start, maybe here and there. But he's a heck of a 6th man. Its one thing having a great shooter coming off the bench but having a 7 footer that could start anywhere come off the bench will be huge. Especially knowing we wont be losing anything on the defensive end when we get into the first couple guys off the bench

    Drewd33

  • Cal doesn't promise anyone they'll start and Noel said that himself.. If WCS is playing better, he'll play and I see no way in the world that Wiltjer doesn't start, as well. We need his outside shot.. I don't think being the #1 HS prospect has anything to do with anything.. Quagmire, no one is down on Noel.. He's going to be a huge factor on the team, regardless of the role he plays, but, at this moment in time, WCS is clearly playing the better ball..

    bluecatntn

  • This moment in time they're still practicing. I was impressed by WCS as much as anyone but I think we might need to take a step back and see what happens. I gotta feeling Noel will catch up. Regardless they are both excellent talents. The fact that we got both on the recruiting trail just like Wall and Bledsoe should continue to scare the hell out of opposing coaches. Lol.

  • I missed the game last night but all I heard was how good WCS looked. I agree with others on here that Noel will be the starter. I don't think you can risk the psychological damage it could do to Noel by starting WCS over him. He was the #1 or #2 recruit in the country, depending on the service. Give him time and I think he will be really good. Remember, Anthony Davis isn't walking in here every year. And I don't think Cal can afford to play both bigs together too much, especially early on. This team must stay out of foul trouble and to run the risk of getting both of them in foul trouble at one time would not be smart, IMO. I think we will lose a couple of games this year because of foul trouble. We don't have a senior and two sophomores for them to lean back on, and will make some dumb mistakes for a bit. It's all part of their growing process. If this team follows the path of Cal's former teams, they will be a tough out come March, as long as we can get steady play out of our PG position.

  • We have mays and hood both guys will be invaluable as far as leadership goes. I flat out love what mays brings to the table for this team. I can see him averaging double figures off the bench and knocking down clutch shot after clutch shot.

    quagmire

  • I was not saying cal will play Noel because he was the top recruit. I am saying the kid was rated that high for a reason.

    quagmire

  • Cauley looked very well...played great d not only with blocks but had a couple steals and batted some post passes away. Looked to have quick feet also. Noel looked a little out of shape but I heard his back was a little sore so idk how much that of an effect that had on him but I was impressed overall. Goodwin and Poythress are athletic freaks, both can be very graceful when needed. I thought hood played well, looked in his element. I know it's a scrimmage but I'm hoping he can contribute. Harrow may not have scored much but I think he ran the offense well and made sure everyone was in the correct positions. Wiltjer looks poised to have a great season, his feet are much quicker and he's added more ball handling to his repertoire. Lastly I was very impressed with mays...that kid can absolutely shoot the lights out and not just from 3. Has great strength when he finishes lay ups. We're young, rusty, and raw...but so much potential and I'm excited to see what this team is capable of. The scrimmage was very fun to watch last night, rupp was pretty electric over a scrimmage

  • Agreed about Mays quagmire. I think he's more than just a shooter also. He made a fe sweet passes. Hes just a pure basketball player.

I was excited about Hood also Cambell. I'm cautiously optimistic he can bring seething to the table this year.

I wonder if we won't see some zone out of this team especially if cal wants to go big at times.

Cal doesn't play zone. As much as I have screamed at times for him to go to one, it just isn't happening.

Whoa!!! slow down a little. I dont think I can agree that this team will be as good or better than last years. Last years team was something special. I think by Feb. this team could be very good especially on defense with a double dose of shot blockers clogging up the middle and Goodwin being a rabid dog defender on the opposing teams off guard. With all that being said I think this years team can go pretty deep into the tourney but Ill wait awhile before saying we will win #2 in a row.
