Opinions on Charlie Strong Moving to Univ. of Arkansas

  • Charlie Strong was born in Batesville, Arkansas. After lettering for four years ( 1980–1983) at the University of Central Arkansas.....

I normally wouldn't bring up a U of L topic on our football board, but since this could impact the future of the in-state rivalry, what do you think are the chances that Charlie Strong would be offered and/or accept the University of Arkansas head coaching position if John L. Smith and the Arkansas football team continues to struggle or underachieve this year?

  • I'm telling you now, Strong will coach a SEC school after this season. I guarantee it.

  • If Strong has the year that his schedule looks like he will have, he will be wanted by many schools that is for sure. But if he would screw up and go 7-5 again or even 8-4, he could be back at ul.

    UKlaw82

  • All very, very good points OP and you would think that Uark would be knocking down his door during and/or after the season.

    BlueRaider22

  • It will be interesting to see what happens. I think the conference situation will also have a say inthis as well. I dont think Strong's career aspirations end with a Big East title and playing pathetic schedules.

  • Not that Joker is on his way out the door, but what if a spot opened here? That would be an interesting dynamic. Not sure I want what Charlie brings with him right now though and that is Hurtt.

  • How could you turn down an SEC job to stay at UL though? Especially one that is close to his hometown. He probably grew up an Arkansas fan.

The most interesting thing for me is how does the University of Arkansas administration sell the fact to boosters and fans that they would have had 3 straight head coaches from the University of Louisville.
Personally, I think that is a hard sell and I think it plays into the equation.

Keep UL job = annual 10+ win seasons and middling bowls (usually has shot at Orange Bowl)

SEC West job = annual 8+ win seasons and trips to Cotton/Capital One/Outback Bowl (occasional shot at Sugar Bowl)

  • this will probably be the last chance they have at a BCS bowl..That affiliation is going away based on everything I have read..

  • If UL goes to the B12 like alot are predicting, I think Strong would be smart to stay at UL.. Competing against the SEC west year in, year out, is a tough sell.. To me, the best scenario for UL is to have the ACC expand and them get added to there conference..The only way I'd leave UL if I were Strong, is if UL gets stuck in the BEast, because that's going to be nothing more than a glorified CUSA.

The Big 12 and ACC won't touch UofL. They would have to eliminate alcohol sales at their games for one. Improve their academics for two. But the first one will keep them down. That is probably $5 million+ in revenue that helps keep them afloat.

100% agree and if Arky comes calling, he's gone. He might take the Florida job if offered both.

  • Strong will never win the SEC West at Arkansas as long as Saban and Miles are there if he gets the job. Strong ins't nearly the coach Bobby P. is even though I despise him. Strong will be 3rd at very best and more likely 4th after Auburn gets their new HC after this season.

Arky fans have already raised the bar. Strong won't be able to meet that. I think he's a good coach and recruiter and not a great coach or great recruiter.

Not many are talking about this, but I have to think he would be on Mitch's list. I don't think he'd want the job though, because he would be looking for an SEC job where he won't have to competely rebuild. I imagine he'd also want to go somewhere where they are more comitted to football as a whole.

Completely rebuild? That's a pretty low shot at the team and is flat wrong! Do you ever get tired of bashing this team and administration? You make yourself look like a little child. banghead

  • If we're not rebuilding than what would you call it?

We're not completely rebuilding. If you can't see there are some nice pieces already in the program then you don't know football.

    bluecattn,
UofL is not going to the B12 anytime soon...Not w/ the B12 signing a $2.6billion contract that will pay each of the 10 member schools over $20M / yr...They are not going to slice that pie any thinner if they do not have too...And they do not HAVE to!

I could easily see Strong leave UofL for either ARK (which we know will be open) or FLA (which would/will come open if Muschamp screws the pooch & goes 7-5 again!).

If I were a cardinal fan...I'd actually be more worries about the FLA gig vs ARK...I expect that ARK will go for someone w/ TX recruiting ties over a homegrown product like Strong. (But FLA would be VERY VERY interested in getting Strong back in Gainesville!)

    catcard202

  • Honestly, who cares? I concern myself with UL and their coaches prior to our yearly game and that's about it.

    JDHLaw11

  • A lot of us care.

Auburn is going to be open as well... They aren't keeping Czick and he will go down as the worst coach to ever win a title.

Arkansas will be very happy if they can get Strong.

Strong will be one of the top three guys available this off season whether anyone here wants to believe it or not.

Why do you just follow me around and try to find a way to glean something you consider hateful towards the team out of my post? You do realize that Charlie Strong's team plays an entirely different style of football than UK don't you? I'm assuming he will take that style with him wherever he goes, and most SEC teams are already more built for it than UK. Hence, he would have to rebuild much more at UK than at Arkansas, Florida, or Tenn.

Get a life man. I'm sorry you seem to be obsessed with me, and my post.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. While Kentucky isn't exactly an SEC football powerhouse, it's not the worst job in NCAA football either. By far.
And not that I'd want it to happen either, but if CJP was to be dismissed as our head football coach, Kentucky could certainly do worse than "Cholly ". JMHO.

not sure what you are disagreeing with by what you said? I didn't say UK was the worst job in the NCAA. Just the worst SEC job that may possibly be open next year. I would think Strong believes his stock to be better than UK. He did tell A&M he wasn't interested last year, leading me to believe he's holding out for something better.

You think pretty highly of yourself don't you? Follow you around? What a joke! Really? All you do is trash UK players, coaches and admin and when someone calls you on it this is the best you can come up with? LOL!

And for what it's worth Coach Strong system would fit very well with the young talent on this team. Do I want him? Hell no! He hasn't proven anything yet? Give it a rest! And quit trash talking the program!
