Here's the way the Administration sees it. All bowl revenue is split anyway as a conference so what does an extra investment in football actually get us? If you get to a BCS bowl versus a let's say Music City bowl you are only talking an extra 750-900K toward what is already coming in. The SEC shares all bowl money anyway so you get 1/12 of the pie every year regardless how you do. To UK it is free money for putting 11 guys out there on Saturday no matter the product.
Basketball however, is where the merchandising money comes from so they have to keep that up to keep the majority of the fans happy and keeps those merchandise dollars rolling in.

Clearly the recruiting expenses are so very important. That is why our extra expenditures over and above the likes of USCe, LSU, and aTm (among others) have led to us landing recruiting classes that are so very superior to those of the same previously mentioned teams.
