No. It's an academic powerhouse, with several of the best Professors in the country. I've looked at their Graduate degree program in Ancient History. SEVERAL professors educated at Harvard, Yale, Brown, etc. First rate academic University. Their basketball program has taken a dip, sure, but that's no reason NOT to go there. JMO.

Wow. I think this was a joke....and a hilarious one at that, but if by some odd chance you were serious...it's still funny.

  • UCLA has ancient history and location. Not to mention the Adidas tie in with him, his sister and AAU program.

They have a horrible conference, are only on National TV a couple times per year because they are tied into FOX Sports whatever regional broadcasts... Sure, the scouts are going to follow him and still draft him high but what about marketing himself nationally? He would be able to do that much easier at either UK or even puke. And that isn't really even debatable.

UCLA is a team that has major issues and poor 'team' concept. I don't think the combination of Bazz and Kyle Anderson are going to be able to fix the culture of curruption and lazy attitudes that are persistent around campus if you believe that SI article.

  • I see what you're saying, cobby, but I think that SI report was a bunch of sensationalist crap for the most part. It could have just as easily been written about Mississippi State. But Mississippi State isn't sexy. Doesn't sell magazines.

All that was (IMO) was a horribly-dysfunctional team with a couple of bad apples that made things worse. They're bringing in two really good kids in Kyle Anderson and Shabazz Muhammad. UCLA will be able to turn things around.

  • I put Ben Howland on the hot seat before the season even started because IMO he has not lived up to expectations in UCLA. He has missed the NCAAT 3 times in 9 years and had two losing seasons!. Has a mere 205-96 record at UCLA, and then that article showing how he let's the team do whatever and lacks control... IF they struggle again next year with Bazz/Anderson, and I think they still will, he will be gone next year.

  • The thing I found funniest of all in this, and a true indicator of the passion of the BBN, was what Evan Daniels said about each players' Twiiter account post-announcement. Bazz lost 4K and Nerlens gained 10K.

Shabazz is going to one of the premier schools (all-around) in the country, on beautiful campus, for a program that's won 11 national titles and a head coach who's been to three Final Fours. But you'd think he chose UC-Irvine. lol

This part, I am not sure i agree.

    1. Premier school? Butler went to 2 championship game in a row too. Does that make them premier school? What makes a school premier is consistency. One reason many believe UK to be the top b-ball school of all time is how they consistently do well. Every generation, and 5 different coaches have won national title.

That's why Duke/Uconn still has ? mark. Can they win after Coach K or Coach Calhoun?

    2. Going to a coach that's been to 3 final four is nice. But it's about style of play. How to show case your talent. There is a reason why Chad Ford said "If Shabazz and Noel goes to UK, they will stay in this ranking, however if they pick elsewhere we have to rethink about the ranking." That's a big statement! What was Shabazz's thinking process?

"Oh beautiful campus, style of play that hurts my style, and school that won 10 championship with coach Wooden...."

    Does that make sense?

Even Paul B, from ESPN, said "Coach you have to play faster now!" Again..is that what Shabazz wanted to hear?

    3. Of course it's not a terrible school, but compared to UK...it's night/day different. with Drug allegation, Missing NCAA tourney with the current coach, and etc.

Yeah, UCLA is freaking beautiful and an excellent school. Actually, UC Irvine and Stony Brook are great schools, too. Many of the "city" schools have improved. UC Davis is a great school.

But that doesn't mean I have to respect UCLA. Not one iota. biggrin

They have been absolutely terrible and had a SI acrticle talk about how awful the program is. Their arena is half full on average, they play when NO ONE can watch them and as bad as the SEC was, the PAC 10 was MUCH worse. Compare that to what he turned down in UK AND Duke, and you would have to think the kid is crazy. Sorry but thats how I see it.

Bazz went to UCLA because he wants to be THE MAN....he didnt want to play team ball and pass ...thus ..im glad he didnt come here. WE want team 1st guys.

I think Shabazz knows that he and Kyle Anderson will control the tempo there. Howland's kind of like Tubby in that regard. If he's got the horses, he'll run.

    Really?

    Signed, Rajon Rondo

Tubby screamed at Rondo to "Push it!" every game. True story.

Rondo ----> pound, pound, pound, pound, pound

He was distant and difficult to work with at times while at UK. Not a bad guy, just a challenge for any coach. (As Doc Rivers knows, too.)

  • Yea but Tubby also started Srockton over him at times also. I can also remember him yelling at Rondo for his passes essentially being "too good". I understand the concept, but at UK that really shouldn't happen.

I recall that but you dont think that perhaps it was because Rondo got conflicting info from Tubby? It looked like to me that Tubby would scream push it and when Rondo did he would get yelled at for doing so. Rondo was in a lose lose situation under Tubby. They just did not jell. Rondo got the brunt of the fan criticism that he didn't deserve, imo.

He is a difficult guy to coach but if you give him the freedom he thrives on he is much easier to coach. It's only when you try reigning him in that he shows attitude.

Any coach worth his salt would do that when the starter doesn't run what is called.

Ultimately, as much as we liked watching Rondo at his best, it probably wasn't a good fit for him at UK.

I wouldn't be surprised if they struggle. Howland is terrible at coaching young superstars. Just terrible especially at Guard.

Probably so. But he didn't help matters by being kind of detached and "self-interested," according to some around the program.

He's just a different dude. Like I said earlier, I don't think he's a bad guy, and I love watching him play for the Celts.

  • Rondo is a guy that likes to be off to himself and is standoffish but that wasn't the main problem on that team. That team lacked chemistry on multiple levels.
