  • I'm going with E.

Announce that he is being let go at the end of the season now to save the players wanting to transfer but let him finish out the season as HC.

  • I think that would qualify as a B.

I just assumed firing him at the end of the season was not announcing anything/making that decision until then. shrug

    Question...

I wish we can separate Football forum and Basketball forum..sheesh...

    Question...

Why would you waste your time interjecting on a football topic. Seriously... Why?

  • B. I see nothing to be gained by firing now UNLESS they had someone really good that they could strike a deal with that is currently unemployed. Firing him now just disrupts the program, causes recruits to decommit, and may encourage current players to transfer since they don't have to sit next year if the coach is fired.

There is never a good time to fire a coach but I would look towards making an announcement around the first of November and allowing Joker to finish the season. That is essentially what we did with Curry under similar circumstances.

In the meantime it gives you time to get your ducks in a row regarding a replacement rather than feeling pressure to get someone in right away and forcing a possible mistake.

  • Let em transfer. They quit today anyway. A lot of them did. Flush the ones that don't want to be here. They'd probably applaud Mitch for firing him.

  • There won't be any firing, I strongly believe Joker is going to resign fairly soon to save some face and allow UK to get it moving finding a new coach. Timing was just not right for him to be the man yet

    Why so serious?

  • Why do some people worry about transfers? It's not as if we have Bama's roster. There's really no one on this team that can't be replaced. With the exception of a handful of guys they're all unranked up to 3 star players. Besides, I'd have to think another coach would have some recruiting ability outside that one HS in Georgia we recruit like mad.
We used to get a few players from Ohio and Pennsylvania. With our SEC connection and being the most northern school, the right coach might try to recruit the void left by Penn State. Some of those kids would look good in blue.

Really? I would sort of like Towles, Sweat, Collins, Taylor, Dupree, Clemons, Mobley and about 20 or 30 others I can think of to stay around a while.

  • They're not going anywhere. If they did they would have to set out a year.

None of them are game changers. I'd dump them and everyone on the roster if it meant Joker was gone and we could start over.

  • OK, 1st..the players didnt quit..the defense just ran out of gas after having to stay on the field cuz Morgan Newton cant throw a birthday party...our defense actually played well..up untill about the 5th time of Newton either throwing a pick or going a very quick 3 and out. The O-Line played very well..if I saw anyone taking plays off it was mabye McCaskill..but at that point why get drilled to catch a horribly thrown ball? Had Max Smith been behind center we woulda been praising Joker and our defense..but now we will never know. We held thier run game in check for most parts and got pressure on Driskell untill we ran outta gas.
As for firing or hiring..I cant change Mitch's mind..I'll leave that to him. But if Joker ever allows Newton to play QB again I think he should be committed...to an assylum. Newton is a good kid..hate it for him..but he just isnt a QB..not even close. AS this year goes on...the coaching situation will sort itself out..we have talent..young or not..and if we wind up 2-10 or 3-9..thats not good enough. If we turn it around..scratch out 5 or 6 wins..then Im sure Joker will be back. the odds are stacked against him. I think this is Jokers last year myself. So C.

The only people who quit was the coaching staff. Carl what an awful post.

Dupree was one of the few silver linings in that game yesterday and his name was called several times. Clemons is a fantastic back when healthy. Towles could end up being pretty phenomenal if he pans out. Sweat and Collins are some of the best talent we've seen at WR in quite some time.

You think it's bad now. If those guys leave and Barnhart flounders we'll be in a world of hurt. Those guys can't do it alone though.

All of that talent will be a total waste if we don't have an intelligent, savvy coaching staff to teach them, manage the game and get them in the right sets and schemes.

  • We have some very good talent: Sweat, Collins, Mobley, Taylor, Towles, Whitlow, Dupree, Harmon, several good young OL and DL and several others who are SEC calibre. With that said, about 25% of our roster is Sunbelt/MAC/CUSA calibre and another 25% OVC level calibre. This is what people don't understand. Teams like Bama, LSU, Ga, UF, Aub, ect don't have half there roster filled with FBS or less talent level.. Even Vandy, Miss St, Ole Miss and Mizzou have a higher level of talent top to bottom than UK does. We get excited about beating out Buffalo, Youngstown St, Memphis and Middle Tn for kids. Where else in the SEC do you see that? I think the staff does a very good job of seeing the diamond in the roughs undervalued kid and you can take a chance with 5-6 of those a year, but, you can't make a living on 40-50% of your roster with those type kids. Chances are, alot more of those are not gonna work out than what these other SEC teams are putting out. And, if you're gonna pull out 5-6 of those type kids, they need to be Ky kids, who, at least, bleed blue and can bring some intangibles to the table if there talent level doesn't pan out. You think a borderline Ga kid or Fl kid will give you 110% for the school like a Ky kid would? I don't.

I think our recruiting has gotten better, but, only slightly better, under Joker. Still not a level that will produce a competitive product on a year to year basis. If we're gonna replace him, the 1st priority is getting someone who is a proven recruiter of bigtime talent. Who knows if a coordinator is that guy or not, so, 2nd priority is a guy who is a proven X and O guy. 3rd, he needs to bring an exciting style of play. Petrino does seem like that kind of guy, but, will he bolt at the 1st better offer. something to think about.
