  • Wilbon says it compares to Dean Smith telling Michael Jordan that he should evaluate his situation closer when he told him he was returning for his senior season. Said Jordan cried when Smith told him maybe it was best to move on. He understood why Cal was saying that, but he's hopeful that MKG will actually stay and graduate from UK. He'd love for a kid to buck the trend and do that.

    Kornheiser says it's time for Cal to go to the pros instead of spending the last few years sending guys to the pros. "If I'm Kentucky, I love him. I do. But every year I get new starters, and then my starters leave. I never really get a chance (inaudible)."

    Wilbon says it's time to go to two-and-done or three-and-done.

    I kind of agree with that. It's not Cal's fault at all but it would be nice to have players stick around and actually have a team team like back in the old days.

  • But he doesn't have to have it one way or the other. Every yr there are bound to be 5* or 4* players that would relish coming to UK that won't be ready to make the jump every yr. He could recruit these guys with several of his 1 and done players.

    Cal could always go on to the NBA. Right now he is awefully close to a possible NCAA championship. I would almost say that at the rate he is going it is likely more of a matter of time until we get #8.

    Now me personally I think the NBA is overrated. I would rather stay as the big fish in the college pond.

    Thing about it is Cal won't leave for the NBA unless he walks into a franchise that can win right away. For example, Miami. I don't think he'd walk into another trap like the Nets.

  • I can't see Cal leaving college unless he wins a title or three first. He would need a perfect fit in the NBA to make that jump again.

    The MKG story of will he stay or go is overblown at this point. I'm going to ignore the issue until the season is over and the deadline for a decision is over.

  • He's only sticking around to get a title. Once he's done that he's gone. And if he goes a couple more years without getting a title he'll go to the NBA anyway. He wants to get back to the NBA eventually. He's basically said so himself.

    Blue Raider, replace Lamb with Brad Beal and Miller with Harrison Barnes this year. Is that not an even better team? Would the Lakers keep Derek Fisher for experience and maturity over Kyrie Irving this year if they had the chance? Of course not. As long as Cal gets superior talent that has good character, keep it up.

    I don't kno if I'd rather have beal over lamb...as a college player lamb is better I think...beal will be the better nba player but in the college game I'll take lamb

  • Cal's only recruiting the same players that KU, NC, Duke, UConn and the like are recruiting.. There is a difference, though. The ones Cal gets tend to be more NBA ready after 1 year, than the ones these other guys are getting. You have to attribute that to Cal developing his players at a speedier pace. Therefore, UK gets labeled a One and Done factory or NBA minor league team. Although when people say these things, it's typically meant as a slight on Cal and UK, but, in reality, it's a compliment to Cals eye for talent and ability to develop kids at a rapid pace.

  • The facts are that Cal never intended to have 4 new starters each year as has been pointed out. The first year was an abberation. Last year one freshman left along with a junior and senior. This year remains to be seen but I think we loose a freshman or two and a sophomore along with our two seniors. All of this points to UK being more stable than the perception that everyone goes after one. The second fact is that these elite fresmen progress further with one year under Cal than any coach I know of. Cal is really gifted at melting a team and getting them to play to their strengths quickly. Honestly I think he is in the right place. He works with very motivated and gifted kids who listen to him and want to learn. On of the key components of Cal's success is defense. The NBA is a different mindset.

  • Kornheiser and Wilbon are complete idiots...Why anyone watches them is beyond me..Matt is exactly right..This MKG thing and many others are way overblown..

  • The problem is Kornheiser and Wilbon don't follow college basketball enough to have an intelligent conversation about it. And when they try to or are forced to by ESPN it becomes painfully obvious they are clueless.
