Pat Washington(ECU) new Wr Coach?

  • I think right now, Joker is going to hire what he believes is a good coach to help, if he does prove to belong and gets to have a long career here, you'll see him go a little younger at some positions but right now, he has to have a mix of both. Last year, everyone was complaining about having a bunch of recruiters and not having any good coaches. I believe as a young head coach, you do a lot of things by trail and error. He has a db coach that understands the dc style of play and now he's getting an more experience wr coach that understands his oc style of play.

    Why so serious?

Agree that he has a lot of experience and ties to the SEC which is a big plus.

He is probably nearing 50 though, do we have anyone on the staff younger than Joker? Must be the oldest staff in the SEC, which is not a good thing, IMHO.

I get the age thing but if you look at the SEC's best recruiters they are all moving into that 35-50 age group.

    Kirby Smart - 37
    Chris Rumph - 40
    Lance Thompson - 47
    Todd Grantham - 46
    Rodney Garner - 46
    Ron Cooper - 50
Frank Wilson (one of LSU's youngest) 38

And I could list more but you get the point. I think we need a younger Coach as well but sometimes age is overrated in recruiting. I don't care how old or young they are as long s we win more games.

  • Too old. Joker canned all of Brooks coaches because they were old and could not recruit now we are moving back. Our staff is getting older and older. How do 50 year old mean relate well to 17 to 18 year olds?

Better hire than Brohm or Parker. Wish he were a bit younger, guess that is the only knock.

This guy seems to have everything you could want in the position. I still think the staff could use a young presence, but that's not nearly as important as the other criteria.

  • I'm on the fence about it, but it seems to be solid if not spectacular.

Tee's recruiting juice won't be replaced, but Washington is a very experienced WR coach with some time on special teams. He's got southern ties and presumably contacts in the HS coaching ranks. Ultimately, I think he can be an asset, technique-wise, to our receiving corps, he can at least get in the door of southern schools, and his experience may be useful to Nord coaching special teams.

I'm not over the moon about this hire, but I think it's a solid one at the very least.

You'll be amazed how many older coaches recruit good players. Tee didn't sign our whole class last year, about everyone did there part and recruited. A lot of Brook's coaches didn't like spending a lot of time on the road and recruit kids.

That is a good point. As much credit as we're giving Tee (and he deserves a lot) it's not like he was landing 7-8 kids per class. He got 3-4 this year off the top of my head.

    This.

Age wasn't the reason for the lack of recruiting on Brook's coaching staff. One Coach had issues with knee's, one just didn't want to recruit and another wanted to play golf instead of doing his job.

The coaches that are here now may be older but guys like Nord, Summers, Cassity, Turner do not act their age. It would be hard to find another group of Coaches that put in the amount of time and effort, regardless of age, as this group.

3 by my count. And I would guess you could give credit to like 3 coaches for Taylor.

    Agreed.

Has NC ring with UT - check

Has ex-players that have played at a high level in the NFL - check

    Understands the SEC - check

Has coached WR's before - check biggrin

Starting QB for Auburn and from Mobile .. I'm sure he is known in Alabama.

    Solid choice.

  • Definitely an old staff as a whole but I think it is a good balance to go along with a young head coach and young team. Also, if Joker can win games, it is a staff that will get younger as 1-2 coaches will leave after each season. Not sure how big a role they play yet, but there is a good group of young guys working with the staff in Andre Woodson, Jonathan Martin, Tommy Cook, etc that I think all have potential to be solid position coaches in the near future.

I don't think you will see recruiting drop off much. UK obviously isn't going to replace Tee Martin but I think we will see Pardue have more success as he now knows more ins-and-outs on recruiting, as well as, there is no doubt Cassity>Brown in recruiting. Top it off with likely the best recruiting class the state has seen in years and the '13 class still has potential to be quite good.

  • Age is overrated. Tee was more of a fluke than the standard.

Also, after thinking about it, this guy CAN recruit. If he couldn't, Joker Would not have hired him.

I was going to say this earlier but thought I'd get hammered for it. I don't think youth in a coach is that big of a deal. I think parents of recruits look for more of a steady hand of a experienced coach than that of a young coach who will party with their son. JMO.

  • I don't think youth is as important as the "juice"/energy factor. If it's not going to be a young guy, it has to be someone who's young at heart, embraces new forms of communication technology, and can relate to the kids today.

  • He certainly would not have lasted 11 seasons under Fulmer if he couldn't recruit. Fulmer once said that he looked for coaches that can recruit first, and that can coach second. But, it does seem that this guy can coach based on his resume, which kinda indicates to me that Joker knows his WRs need some hands on help. Finally, gotta believe that Tee and Sanders have some input in this hire.

TS. Hate to mention Cal in a fb thread, but he's 53 and has more juice than any other head or assistant coach in the country.

What is exactly the rule with these GA's and unpaid assistants? Can they be/are they part of recruiting? I too have been in the camp of getting a "hot young recruiter" to get out there and get players. However, didn't see this coming. Washington has a great resume and I am sure is very well known in the south. Looks like a very good hire.

  • As far as age goes, it's tough to find a young guy with a lot of recruiting ties. Takes years in the business, most of the time as a college assistant, to develop those.

  • Who was that 4-star WR that committed to So. Miss a few years back?

    DACats86

  • Sounds like a good hire to me. I love that he has solid experience as not only a WR coach but ST too. I hope he takes over both roles. Still think Nord and Pardue should switch roles.

Or the Triplett kid. I think he was pretty highly rated also.
