Patrick Towles

  • A while back, I said I would like to see Patrick Towles get a shot at being the starting QB (even as a true freshmen). Many of you disagreed and said he should be redshirted... because the SEC is too tough for a freshmen QB. I always thought that the best way to conquer a quest, was to jump right in, suffer some bumps and bruises, take some falls, etc... because the one who suffers through that and not only gets back up, but comes back stronger... then becomes the one who has proven his worth. He leaves no doubt who the Go-To Guy is... and who the team respects and accepts as their leader.

With that said and considering the latest scoop on our QB situation... I was just wondering how many of you still think he should be redshirted (no matter what)?

  • This is just my opinion but I don't think Joker can afford to have a QB "take some bruises and take some falls" especially early in the season.

He has to find the one that can beat Louisville.

  • Smith will start against UL. Joker is just playing the same ole "don't know, no one has separated routine".

  • I would like to see someone hide Towles helmet before every game, just so nobody is tempted to be ignorant. I want the best chance to win every game, and that should be Smith or Newton. We have a receiving corp that will be finding their way this season and I would prefer to start Towles clock next year after he and the other guys have a year in the system.

  • I must be the only one who would love to see him take over the starting role... and take charge of our team. The sooner the better. IMHO

  • I'd prefer to RS Towles due to seeing the following..

    1. JLO was at times a TO machine early in his career. And then matured into a kid that was hard to get a TO out of later in his career.
JLO single handly lost to MSU his first year by throwing 4 picks, but with some maturity went on to have one of best seasons in UK
history in 2001 with 24 TD vs 5 Ints

    2. Woodson was very similar to JLO. Very rough around the edges early in career (and he got a RS) but put up 2 outstanding years later in his career.

    3. Towles, I believe, has similar potential to be a fine QB at UK. But the game is way fast, he isn't overly tuned in pro-style offense, he was in shotgun seeing the whole field at Highlands and the complication of UK's current offense appears to overtake young Qbs. He can learn as much seeing the system for a year vs. losing games for UK this year.

My biggest counter argument to RSing Towles is there is a temptation to stick with Smith the last 2 years due to his game experience and not give Towles as much a shot to let his talent overcome Smith's experience. But if Smith can be a legit SEC QB...then I'd be OK with letting Towles hold a clipboard for 2 years.

  • Starting a player early can help to push him but you can also risk crushing him. Or getting him hurt bc he wasn't ready. Look at Couch with Cleveland. He was t ready. The team wasn't ready. He got pounded, lost confidence, got banged up, and never recovered.

There are far more QBs who have been crushed bc they started too early rather than excelled. The staff recently stated that Smith and Newton are far ahead of the rest. I say redshirt towles.

You can never start a QB too late but you absolutely can start him too early.

  • Would like to see us be able to RS PT, but not no matter what. Hell, he may be the best come mid-Oct.

No you're not but you are asking for too much - too quick.

Patience in all things is good.

  • I would caution all on the accuracy of the "latest scoop." I had the privilege of being there yesterday. For fear of a permanent banishment from Commonwealth Stadium I won't comment on specifically what I observed. Two things I believe are very important for all to remember are; (1) the staff from this site and other sites are being spoon fed information right now, and (2) this coaching staff at the University of Kentucky is a lot more shrewd than given credit for. It’s like watching Byrne v. Fischer on 10/17/06.

I honestly believe that after what I’ve seen in the last month, not what I’ve been told, but what I’VE SEEN, is that Coach Phillips will have whoever ready to go 9/2/2012 and this IS a much improved football team and organization.

Thanks for the info.....to be a fly on the wall would be sweet sometimes.

Now on to the topic at hand.
I really want PT redshirted this yr, unless he is head and shoulders above everyone eles. My reason for that is quit simple. PT is very used to winning, and 9 out of 10 UK fans (myself included) seem to THINK we are one yr away from a very good yr. So if we are suppose to have such a bad yr this yr (witch i dont think we will) why put a young man though he pain of losing this yr when he can set back watch, practice, and learn our system instead of maybe destroying his confidence?

I have no doubt PT will do great things for UK before he's through, but i think Mad Maxs is our best bet for this yr, and he maybe for the next 3 yrs. Whoever it is I just want us win.

Thats alot on a phone so hope it came out right. Go CATS

  • max smith is the starting qb. just like hartline was his sr year. joker is not going to let smith rest easy but he is the starter

    quagmire

  • Towles would be wasting a year if he doesn't red shirt. No way that he can get adjusted to the speed of the SEC in a month. Impossible. He may or may not win the starting job next year, but in the open practice, I didn't see anything that jumped off the page. His arm didn't separate him from the others, but then again , when he gets comfortable in the offense , it might.

  • I live in South Carolina during the summer. I have been at a ton of highschool games down there. I know this for sure the game there is faster than the highschool games here in terms of team speed and size.
PT has neaver played a game that will even come close to his first game in coll. If he had played ball in the south he might have a better chance of getting use to that speed. But no he should redshirt.

Towles has played in some tough games being in northern KY. The cincy schools are a tough bunch. But like Jaw, if someone on the staff could admit that Towles is ready to play, knew the playbook, and actually believed that the oline would protect him, I would say go for it. But Sanders has said both freshmen, have look like freshmen way too much in practice at this time so I will be ok with him starting his great career next year.

  • Thanks for sharing oldschool.

I think PT should RS unless he is demonstrable better and has the system down. I can't see that being the case as he is not familiar enough with playing from under center because his HS team ran out of the shotgun.

  • I can see both Smith and Newton playing in the UL game. Smith starting and if we have trouble moving the ball then Newton coming in for a shot. Or possibly in short yardage situations having Newton come in as a big guy to get the first down on a QB run.

It's still a good separation in overall talent.

Stephenson HS outside Atlanta, which we've gotten a few kids from, has a dozen or more Division 1 signees annually.

    That's just from one school.
