Petrino & UK picking up Steam in National Media

  • Hi All, long time lurker feeling compelled to post about the coaching search.

I've noticed several huge news outlets posting stories about how logical it is for Petrino to UK.

I hope with this picking up steam in the national media, that the heat is turned up on our AD, BOT, and Eli to really go all out to get Petrino here.

Links to some of the big outlets:

Bobby Petrino is interested in Kentucky job

The dad of the former Arkansas coach told the Louisville Courier-Journal his son wants to coach again and the opening at Kentucky interests him.

Bobby Petrino To Kentucky Is A No-Brainer - Forbes

Kentucky needs a new head football coach, and Bobby Petrino wants to coach in the SEC. The school has said it has no interest in the maligned former coach, but it would have much to gain financially by bringing him aboard.

  • nice articles, especially the one by Forbes. Should be sitting down with Petrino as we speak and coming to an agreement. Nothing to lose and everything to gain. Go get him immediately Mitch before someone else does.

  • I hope this happens, but I don't see Mitch making the hire. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

  • You guys do understand that it's not just on Mitch. Is BP really interested? Is he just using UK to get the other schools calling?

Sure do. His dad said he might take the first job he's offerred. Worth a shot.

I just meant I don't think Barnhart will offer.

I understand that he might be playing poker with some other schools on this, but if money is no object, then why don't we roll the dice?

In our case, being one of the lowliest football teams in the land at this time, I think the reward would be greater than the risk.

The only things we have to very careful about is ensuring the contract has clauses for any possible embarrasing situation BP might get himself involved in if he hasn't truly learned his lesson. Oh, and a $10 million dollar buyout if he's hoping to stepping stone his way back to a greener pasture.

I personally hope he learned his lesson, now has humility, and is looking to turn UK into the greener pasture he might otherwise want to move to.

  • He is suprisingly a hotter commodity now than when he got the Arkansas job.

Then they had all the leverage to be able to put in all the buyout clauses.

Now I think he's in a stronger position particularly at Kentucky and would not sign off on a contract with all the restrictions.

For somebody that nearly wrecked his life 6 months ago he sure has more power right now than anyone ever expected.

Nobody will hire him without a huge buyout clause. Arkansas had one, so will anyone else that hires him.

I question if he's really as hot as he seems. His record and coaching ability are exceptional, but the other schools mentioned that might have interest have a lot more to lose than does UK.

The very worst he could do here would be bring negative attention to our program by thinking with the wrong head again. He can't make us lose games any worse than we already have.

At Auburn, they just dealt with a cesspool of media during/after Cam Newton, do they really want to buy the risk? If GC is even let go, I'd rather take Dan Mullen if I were them, and I think that's what will happen there.

Tennessee, Dooley is most likely gone. Gruden is a fantasy. They just got rid of Kiffen (wonder if he deflated game balls there too), who ran a circus there. I also don't think they'll jump on the Petrino bandwagon, for the same reasons as Auburn.

    Arkansas... heh, no.

I don't think the market is as big for Petrino as it seems. Great positions coming up, but I think as far as equations go, Kentucky makes the most sense. We have nothing, absolutely nothing, to lose with his hire.

We hired a BB coach who was in the midst of an NCAA investigation, had vacated games in his past, and is constantly slandered by the national media. It was a risk, but we took it because we wanted the absolute best coach available.

Not to say Auburn or UT won't use the same logic we did for their hire, I just can't rationalize that BP is their best option at this point.

  • I think it's entirely possible, if not probable, that Petrino (or his agent) orchestrated this to some degree to get Auburn/Tennessee to jump into the fray with a little more vigor.

I agree it's possible, but in a way, I hope this is just genuine interest.

He has ties to the state, kids in the state, and he knows we are at a point where we must pour some resources into our program.

All speculation, of course, but hopefully he's not playing chess and just genuinely sees UK as a great opportunity to prove his prowess as a coach to pick us up and carry us up the ladder.

  • There is another topic on the board saying Auburn reporting they are prepared to fire Chizik. Looks like Bobby P's dad could have been a ploy to get other schools on board. If that is so, then Bobby P is still the same ole person and I feel UK will be better off without him.

Ya know, I agree. Would not surprise me at all.
In fact, I agree with a lot of things I read on CP. My problem is I love UK football and sometimes what I agree with changes daily.
    I want to WIN.
Hell, I live in Louisville. I absolutely HATE UofL and everything to do with them. I personally can't stand that dog turd Petrino. I can't stand orange and UT. I have never wanted Fulmer.

What I do want is for UK to have a winning football team.
I have sat throught so many sorry years and games it is hard to count. I'm real tired of losing. Real tired of being the butt of jokes by terrible ESPN announcers that shouldn't be announcing PeeWee football, let alone major college on TV.

I've been mad, embarrassed and then apathetic over the past 3 years. At this point I almost don't care about a coach not having scruples and being a little bit of a POS.
Don't cheat, don't be a total jerk, just WIN.

Was never on the Petrino or Fulmer bandwagon but if that is that it takes for us to get 3-5 years of GREAT football before they would bail and move on, then so be it.
We really have nothing to lose.
    We're rock bottom now.

    Bring on Petrino.
    I want to win.

    Go Cats!
    cheers

  • Well, point being is that I don't care any more. Petrino, Fulmer, whomever. I want to win and I want to win now.
The right coach can do that.
    No more experiments.
I've been through my "45 years of hell" in watching UK football.
Even a fleeting "five years or so of heaven" would be nice even if it may be short lived.
    Go Cats!
    cheers

  • I think everyone should pay close attention to the line where Petrino's father said

"He’s stayed a student of the game,” the elder Petrino said. “He told me he might take the first job he gets offered."

This doesn't suggest to me that BP was asking for UK to contact him. If anything, it's an attempted warning to UT/Auburn that he's not planning to wait for the end of the season.

    Will it work? Who knows.

    JDHLaw11

  • The problem is that Mitch is mentally unable to separate his personal wishes vs what's best for the UK FB program.

Before the BP's dad broke silence about his interest...It was very unlikely Petrino would even get a look from UK about the job. Now...After all this broke & fans are in an uproar...Mitch is in a VERY sticky situation.

Option A: He can either hire Petrino, knowing he'd have 1 foot out the door...And take the heat for hiring a "slimy" character that's left his last 3 jobs in not-so-nice ways...And hang his job on the line that BP will not screw the pooch....

Option B: He doesn't give Petrino a look & goes another way w/o even talking too him about the job...Allowing BP to do what BP does...potentially at TENN or AUB or even back at UofL (if Chally leaves this yr)...It will come back to bite Mitch in the nuts!!! It will be exponentially worse if Mitch's guy struggles out the gate w/ the transistion to the SEC...The BBN would go balistc & would justifiably be calling for Mitch's head!

So, Don't be surprised when it's option C:...It'll be leaked that UK offered the job & BP turned it down w/o much explanation. Mitch will offer him a deal that no one in their right mind would accept...And then act like he tried to get BP to UK, but no deal could be reached...All as a ruse, an attempt to provide himself cover for not hiring BP & justify going in a different direction from the obvious home run hire!

You know what the worst part is...Either way, UK will be looking for another coach in 3yrs...Just instead of having to replace Petrino, after he's turned UK a 10 game winner & moves on to TX (when Mack Brown retires)..They'll still be be looking for another guy that can turn a 3-9/5-7 UK team into a 10 game winner.

How about Plan C take some time and find a good coach who will do things the right way and win at the same time and has a history of being a good and faithful employee.

Sleepy I'll ask again? What college football team has Petrino left in less than 4 years. I'l also give you two names that have hopped from job to job and are considered to be some of the best in the their business. Nick Saban and Larry Brown.

  • Does anyone else find it funny that the 2 guys that could possibly be the next coach at UK is Phil Fulmer and Bobby Petrino. I dont think anyone on this Earth would have imagined that 5 years ago.
