I was actually told this by a Hog fan before the season started. The plan is to bring him in as a Special Assistant. They want to Monitor his behavior in 2013. Then when Mack steps down he will become the new Head Coach at Texas.
They have the money and the power to get him. Question is: Can they control him?
I would bet almost anything it would never happen. You don't don't go from a great human being like Mack Brown to a scum of the earth type like Petrino. Those fans would never go for it. Texas is not the kind of place you need a Petrino. There are lots of good coaches who could win there and would take the job. Texas has zero need to be desperate. They can get a great coach. That is one great job.

I don't see him going to be on the bench for anybody. And in Texas he can ride his bike with anybody he chooses without even grandmas batting an eye. Football is religion.
No way Texas hires Petrino. They are going to get a good coach. Mack likely stays if they win out this year imo but their list of guys are Patterson - TCU, Petersen - Boise and Mullin - Miss St. They have the most money of any school in the country and are not going to bring in a guy with a questionable past. Petersen is the favorite candidate to be paired back with his former OC at Boise.

When you get beat as bad they did by Oklahoma you might reconsider.
As a head coach? Not likely. Texas has more money and more power than just about any school in the country. Plus they have probably the best recruiting base in the country. They can pick who they want.
Thanks for the comments Max. You will have a major told you so if this played out. Hard to imagine at the moment and I do agree that it seems odd UT would take on the risk when they have zero need too. They did do something stupid like make Muschamp the coach in waiting though so you never know.
