Phillips leaves lasting impression with area coaches

Joker Phillips has spent roughly 23 years at UK in a playing or coaching capacity. He will coach his last home game Saturday versus Samford but he has left a lasting impression on many of the area's coaches.

  • The Manual coach stepped up and did not toe the political line...

Oliver Lucas, the head coach of Louisville (Ky.) duPont Manual, felt that Phillips could have done a better job recruiting the state.

"Joker has always been a stand off person, but has treated me with respect. I felt that Joker didn't do a great job of recruiting his own state. Players from outside the state are a must also but you build your program from your own state," Lucas said.

LOL...they tried by targeting THE BEST players in the state who elected to go elsewhere.

This statement is one of the main problems with UK Football: It's supposed to be the refuge for crappy Kentucky high school football. The great "savior" Bobby Petrino pissed off the majority of high school coaches in the state with the way he did things. Charlie Strong isn't stupid either. Build the program with kids from real football states, where the actual talent is, and concentrate your efforts on maybe the 3-5 legit High D-1 prospects the Commonwealth produces each year.
