Phillips planning on RB committee

Joker Phillips doesn’t just have depth at running back this season. He said Wednesday six men are competing for reps, and all six could end up with reps by season's beginning.

  • Thanks for the article, James.

I am confident in our backs this year and think our OL is going to be good for it.

  • If we can have just a serviceable passing game to get defenses out of the box we'll be successful at RB. Fresher the legs the better we'll be too. Sounds like a plan.

  • Really excited about our run game this year. Injuries really hurt us last year, both at RB and on the O-line. We'll know where we stand in game 1: we rushed for a net 35 yards against the Cards last year, and lost by 7. Wow. I think averaging 150/game is a realistic number, and last year that would have translated to 1-2 more wins IMO. Can't wait until Sept 2nd.

  • Joker stated earlier this spring that he wanted to pass to set up the run this year so the depth at RB and the variety will be extra nice. Of course our offense flows best with RB's that can also catch the ball out of the backfield.

  • As long as we stick with the hot-hand. Let's not play RB merry-go-round just because we can. I see this as a major plus if we handle it right.

  • IF Clemons is healthy and can stay healthy along with Oline staying healthy we'll have a dangerous run game. And if we're having trouble put Mister Cobble at fullback.

  • I've said it once and I'll say it again and I'll continue to say it through out the season when Josh Clemons isn't playing up to snuff.... That dude really needs to be redshirted... We've got enough depth to where if he is redshirted he won't be missed.

I understand that Joker is trying to use all weapons to make sure he has a job next year but I hope closer to the UL game they recognize that Josh Clemons needs to be sitting on the sidelines for this season....

  • I would sure hate it if we burned both Mobley & Taylors redshirt years for only a handful of carries. same for Clemons. Coshik, George, and Sanders are veterans and have made plays for us in the past. That ought to be enough depth to keep one of the freshmen out of the rotation.

I do think that if Clemons isn't ready to go, a redshirt may not be out of the question. UK has more quality depth at RB than I can remember. Shouldn't just shove him out there.

  • Depth at RB is very important. However I hope that once the season gets started one of the backs can emerge as the Man and get most of the reps. Most successful SEC teams have depth at RB but have one guy that is the go to man. I would like to see one of these guy earn 20 or so carries per game.

  • Yeah, I hope we don't really rotate through 5 or 6 guys each week. Its tough for any one of them to get the feel for the game and how the defense is reacting. I want to see us rotate in fresh legs when needed, especially late in the game when the opposing D is tired, but not every series or every few plays just for the hell of it.

Oh its pure speculation on my part. But in the summer months Joker says that he wants to use 9 WRs, since fall camp started he's cut that number down to 6 or 7. The story comes out that he could do a RB by committee this season. He's talked about the dynamics at TE and how many different options we have. And in the early part of the offseason after the Tennessee game he said that the Tennessee game showed that they need to have the Wildcat as part of there offense. So if you are keeping count that is 6 or 7 WRs, 6 RBs, 3 TEs, and 2QBs. That is a lot of personnel. So combine that with the thought of Joker is less conservative than Rich Brooks and Randy Sanders and is a fighter. Once you take all that into consideration and you understand that this is the job that Joker has always wanted then you know that Joker knows that this is going to be his last shot to show that he's worthy of the job and if he wants to keep it he's got to show improvement on the field and post a better record so in order to do that he's going to throw everything out that he has and what ever sticks that is what he's going to row with for the season....

I don't doubt we use 6 RB's throughout the entire season given the fact that we will have some injuries and some of the guys on down the depth chart will get carries against cupcakes. But I doubt we use more than 3 backs in games to start the season. Clemons may or may not be one of those guys given the nature of his injury.

Huh? Use weapons to make sure he has a job next year? You think that's what he's thinking and basing his decision on?

I take it that you don't know Joe Phillips very well, do you?

Why would Joker play a dinged up Clemons when he could be in better shape to wins games with the rest of the healthy backs on the roster? He'd be cutting his nose off in spite of his face and I don't see that happening.

I do agree that Clemons may need to redshirt if he's still that hobbled. That said, Clemons would have to agree to redshirt for it to happen and there's always the possibility that he doesn't want to do that.
