Pistol

  • seen the pistol offense mentioned yesterday by one of the recruits. I can only see this working with Whitlow if we have the QB running a lot

  • As long as its not a pure statue guy, we would be good.

  • Exactly. The pistol does not need a mobile QB. It simply combines some pieces of the shotgun with a single back formation. As long as we don't have someone with lead in their shoes we'll be just fine. And none of our QBs are immobile.

  • i thought it was for a dual threat quarterback. seen Kaepernick say "It makes it 11-on-11 football," . only guys running it are Cam Newton, RG3 and Kaep

  • i've seen Alabama run some pistol formations so its not out of the ordinary.

  • It's not an offense, it's a formation just like the single back shotgun. They can both be run in the same offensive scheme but the pistol provides a bit more play action and ability to run between the tackles.

  • its just like the spread offense. its a formation also

  • Brown ran the pistol some at TTU. Has always been the plan here. It's one of his "tweaks" of the Air Raid

  • You don't need a mobile QB to run the pistol formation but it adds a whole new dimension with a mobile QB for the simple fact you can put in the read opition as a part of it. Main thing with the pistol that it will allow is more of down hill running game while taking away having your QB take a snap under center which increases the chance for speed rushers to sack the QB while dropping back to pass. Decreases your QB's read time which should allow you to make faster reads on coverage.

    Why so serious?

  • I remember ESPN had a stat that Alabama was better running the ball out of the pistol formation by at least 2 yards, it can be very effective in the run game and adds a dimension of confusion.

I can't wait to see the Spring Game, it will be interesting with a new offense and more aggressive defense.

  • offenses are just more complex than they use to be to keep up with the speed of defenders, the more formations you have the more the defense has to prepare for. i am a fan of using the pistol in different formations of the air raid. Brown also likes to run a little more than tradition air raid so it sets us up for big plays. will be hearing lots of TOUCHDOWN KENTUCKY!!

  • It's used mainly so the QB can receive the ball and already be dropped back a bit to be able to see the defense quicker and so the RB can line up directly behind him to even up the defense and make it easier to run to either side at anytime.

It's not quite as good for power running as the I but a ton better than the shotgun and not as good for QB setup as the shotgun but a ton better than the I or pro set.

The perfect set for a one back pass to set up the run system.

  • The pistol is one of the hottest formations in college football. And yes it is also a offense for certain schools like Nevada and many in the NAIA ranks. I look for us to use it 40-50% of the time. Can't wait until SG, this year should be a treet...

This. Tons of teams are now running the pistol formation as their primary set, and some of those teams happen to run the read option out of the pistol (like what the 49ers are doing); however, the pistol does not necessarily mean you are running the read option. In fact, it is RARELY run unless you happen to have a great running QB like Newton, Kaepernick, etc. Most teams running the pistol formation are NOT running the read option. It simply allows you to get your QB a little further back from the LOS while still being able to incorporate a downhill running game instead of the traditional draws and delay handoffs out of the shotgun.
