everyone can say my people or sources are saying this or saying that cause at this point, it's all up in the air. If UK wants to show that we're serious about football, than a coaching change is in order along with a ton of other things. You can't bring back Joker for one more year thinking that will work. Times have change and UK, fans, BOT need to change with it. I think Mitch has done a very good job so far. UK was leaning to retaining Joker for another year but that was after UGA. We got embarrassed by a bad Missouri team and look really unprepared. We're consider the 3rd best team in Kentucky in college football and if that doesn't bother anyone, than just cancel the football team cause I refuse to except that being this bad is fine. Youth and injuries only can go so far. Bottom line, is Mitch going to come out this coming week or the next and say Joker is fired, I highly doubt it. Joker and co are over. You think Brooks went to the Arkansas game and came back to Lexington for fun? Brooks was an adviser for Mitch last time when we was looking for a coach but ended up becoming our coach. Who knows who the next coach will be but it has to be the right hire.

Didnt Brooks advise Mitch the best person for UK football head coach a few yrs ago was....Joker?

So if it is Mitch and Brooks coming up with the next head coach sould we worry?

Love what Brooks did for our team as a coach, not so sure as an advisor. But untill we get bonding and renovations to most things football..will it even matter whi the coach is if this hands are tied?

At that time, Brooks felt Joker was ready and he had some coaches that could help him. It was the right call to give Joker his shot and it isn't panning out. Too many mistakes have happen that has just killed Joker. I agree we need to buy into football, only way to help improve but a new form of leadership is needed also. I have no idea of who the next coach will be but a change is coming. Who knows if it's gonna be for the best or the worst.

    Why so serious?

The true story here has been twisted.

Coach Brooks did give Joker his endorsement by saying he was "ready".

Rich was negotiating some things involving the football program with Mitch Barnhart, after the bowl loss to Clemson in December of 2009. He wanted the promised recruiting room and an increase in salaries for his staff among other things. Mitch would not deliver and basically indicated the time was right for Coach Brooks to move into retirement and Coach-in-Waiting Joker Phillips to take the reins.

I find it interesting that, to my knowledge, Rich Brooks is never interviewed about what he thinks of Joker's performance. Rich might be taking the high road, but if the truth of the facts came out, many of you would be most surprised or maybe even shocked.

  • I understand what ur saying and i agree i have been a supporter of Jokers all a long and I know that most if what's wrong is way deeper than Joker. I really wished Joker would have worked because i think it would have been a great thing for UK for Joker to have worked but it hasnt, but at the same time I think the was delt a bad hand. Im truly sad about Joker not working out

I think it is safe to say that everyone would have loved for Joker Phillips to have a long, prosperous career as the head football coach at the University of Kentucky. He was a Kentucky kid, former player, former assistant coach, and offensive coordinator. Everyone was rooting for this storybook situation.

It didn't work. It is past tense now.

It must be clarified what is meant by Joker being dealt a bad hand. I for one, think he was dealt a very good hand. Rich Brooks handed him the baton in the program's best shape any new coach has had since Blanton Collier nearly 60 years ago!

    Joker has totally mismanaged it!

I only agree that Joker was dealt a bad hand if you are referencing that fact Mitch put a little lamb among some big bad wolves in the SEC. UK had no shot in this league with CJP at the controls.

You said in an earlier post that you think Mitch has done a good job so far, are you kidding? I will say that him hiring Cal was a great thing but when it comes to the football program he has done a horrible job. I know a lot of fans like Brooks but he and Joker has left something to be desired to kind about it. Mitch hired Brooks 10 years after he left the Oregon Ducks and while at Oregon he had a losing record, then he coached in the NFL some and had a losing record there also. So Mitch had this great idea in hiring a coach who hadnt coached a college kid in 10 years and had a losing record at his previous college stop. He broght this guy here with all those glowing endorsements to a program that was begging for someone who could win in the SEC. He went 39-47 overall(bowl wins included) and 16-39 in the SEC. Then Mitch in all his wisdom hired Joker that had no HC experience because Brooks said he was"ready" look what Joker has done. You want the same guy to hire the new coach? I dont.

I must jump in and defend Rich Brooks on this one.

Rich Brooks' Oregon Ducks had gone to bowl games in 4 of his last 6 years in Eugene. After having an outstanding 1994 season, the Ducks played undefeated #2 ranked Penn State in the Rose Bowl. Ki-Jana Carter led the Nittany Lions to victory that afternoon, but Oregon in the Rose Bowl (at that time), was the equivalent of the University of Kentucky in the Sugar Bowl....unheard of.

Rich parlayed his success from the 1994 season and accepted the head coaching position with the St. Louis Rams in the NFL. He stayed there for just two seasons after Ram owner Georgia Frontiere was able to hire the coach she longed for.... Dick Vermeil.

Rich went to the Atlanta Falcons as their defensive coordinator and was briefly their acting head coach during the Falcons 1998 Super Bowl run.

These are the rest of the facts. Rich Brooks is/was a winner, regardless of what his career records were.

I wish he was still coaching the University of Kentucky. We would not be in this mess right now Trust me on this!

And yet the defense forced a pair of turnovers and held Missouri to 273 yards, the lowest total of the season for any opponent, by a lot. Defense wasn't the issue today.

With one QB who couldn't start at an NAIA school and another that looked like he just got out of a hospital bed. That is Mizzou I am talking about, not UK.

Sorry, but I wasnt really going after Brooks but it came out that way. My point was Mitch and his decisions. I have an idea how about Andy Ludwig the OC of SDSU. He is a great offensive mind. When I played at UK under Curci we went 26-18 and in 1977 we were 10-1 but we took our licks 1 year where we went 2-8-1. Yes you could actually tie back then. The players that played for Curci were extremely loyal I wonder how the players today feel about Joker? I bet they are pretty loyal but have to be awefully frustrated with everyone calling for Jokers head. With that being said I dont think theres anyway that a new coach needs to be hired I just dont know who that could be. Remember Andy Ludwig.

We also got drilled with probation under curci. We now know that Fran cheated to get the studs that got us those records. That was an era of excitement, but also an era of embarrasment.

Think what you will but I wasnt involved in any of that stuff and I still have fond memories about the way we played and how we were treated by coach Curci and for the most part by the fans. There were some problems that I wasnt aware of but what does that have to do with Mitch B.?

I thought you were implying that the era under curci was better than what we saw from 05-11. I think the job is a lot better job today than those years because of our facilities, the young talent and Brooks recent success.

Sadly "Hop", Rich Brooks' recent successes and most importantly, his ability to change the "psychological" culture of the football program (creative ways of losing winnable football games went away for the most part under Brook's watch), have been erased by the poor management of his successor.

Our players are beginning to play with the apathy that we saw many UK teams play with prior to Rich Brooks' third year with the program.

Attitude can't change overnight with the right coach. Talent can't. We have young talent something we didn't have when brooks got here. We also don't have probation nor the embarrassing facilities.

The job is much more attractive now than when we hired brooks.
