Position Changes *Football Question

  • To get away from the recruiting talk a little bit...I was wondering what everyone thinks about possible position changes that Stoops will make? I assume Simpson will no longer be a linebacker but I could be wrong.

  • He played rover saftey, he never played d-end.I think if we don't get another juco d-end Bud Dupree will move there.

  • I could see Whitlow moving to a TE or WR... I could see Forest moving from LB to S/DE/TE(any of the 3)...I could see Simpson moving from SS/LB to DE or TE... I could see Taylor moving from RB to SS or LB... I could see Dupree moving from LB to DE...I could see Harmon moving from CB/S to WR...

These are just a few of the many possibilities...

  • Simpson is 6'2, 223 lbs - It seems as though teams ran at him a lot last year, and he had trouble with TEs and OL getting on him. why do you think he could move to DE?

I am interested to see what happens with Forrest. I would like to see him bulk up a little for SLB (IF he can maintain his speed), especially if Dupree moves to DE.

    WLB - Henderson, Simpson
    MLB - Williamson, Thomas
    SLB - Forrest, Paschal

  • The hybrid positions are gone, so Dupree and Simpson will be looking for a home on Eliot's D. I would expect Dupree to play WDE and Simpson to play WLB. Also, with the size and athleticism the Blaylocks possess, they may find themselves getting shots at a number of positions. Everyone on the DL will experience a major change. Minter's 3-4 asked a lot of guys to play outside their comfort zone.

  • Simpson has a great physical set for LB. he needs to learn the game though. Many times he was horribly out of position. He'll be a good LB in the future.

Dupree is a perfect pass rush DE. He'll excel early.

Whitlow will move to WR but maybe not as soon as some may think. He may be needed to round out the QB depth chart.

  • Defense:
    1. Dupee is most obvious to DE
    2. Miles essentially played the rover in Minter's 3-4...which isn't too far removed from WLB in 4-3. I say he contends with Lowrey at WLB. (or is my hope we move Ashley away from safety spot due to his speed).
    3. Khalid Henderson moves to SLB and takes the starting job.
    4. I look for Tiller to move off CB and to safety....seems not quite as agile as Quinn at CB
    5. Forrest is an interesting guy...I love his speed and aggressiveness...but I think he doesn't have a spot today....hopefully he can add some bulk and be situational pass rush DE maybe.
    6. Douglas moves back out to DE...why he was at DT was silly IMO.

    Offense:
    7. Demarco Robinson moves from outside WR to slot...easy move for him.
    8. I'm not sure Darryl Collins stays as an inside WR or moves to outside hashes WR....
    9. I'm not sure the role of guys like Tyler Robinson and Warren. This offense doesn't use FB and blocking TE isn't a strength either but these guys played a ton of snaps past 2 years.
    10. I say Whitlow sticks at QB and may provide insurance to RS Towles....to opinions that Smith isn't going to win QB job...I have no idea how that conclusion can be arrived at. Max is the most accurate by a ton, quickest delivery by even further and we'll see about reading defenses in new offense..but I'd give that edge to Max in all probability.

I still would argue a starting DE isn't on campus yet, a starting CB and with all the RB offers...maybe not even a starting RB either.

I agree with most all of that except RB...I would have to assume George or Clemons will be our starting RB and thrive in this system.

No way lowery plays linebacker in the 4-3. He didnt even play rover in the hybrid 3-4 that minter ran.

Forrest will either be asked to gain 10 lbs and play wlb or lose 10 and play safety or could play tight end???

  • Any chance Warren moves to defense? If I recall correctly wasn't he originally recruited as a DE or LB? Looks pretty physical.

No. Warren was recruited exclusively as a full back. He'll play fullback in our goal line situations.

Mainly because I feel he's too slow afoot to play LB or SS, so, he's either going to have bulk up to 235-240 and play DE or move to offense as a TE.. Either way, I don't see him playing LB again this year..

    bluecatntn

  • Warren has not played well. With a new staff I don't know how much they will use him.

  • Simpson is not too slow for LB. Our offensive schemes and coaching were just poor. Nobody looked good on defense last year.

  • One thing this team is seriously missing is a big, tall, physical WR.. Yancey could give us that, but, most likely not for a couple of years.. I could even see Forest moving there.. He'd need to trim down to improve his speed and agility, but, the guy had great hands in HS and can go up over most CBs and get the ball.. He'd make a solid SS too..

If Whitlow ends up being #3 in depth at QB, and we do not recruit a QB that is more talented then him, he will stay at QB, just for the numbers purpose but he could still be used on offense in other areas. If we get that Elite Eleven QB, he will be playing another position if spring practice doesn't work out for him. Miles at DE, too small, TE, too many players there now. Taylor, stays at RB until we can see if his injuries are healed fully. Harmon, he stays at CB, he is the real thing, Brown will bring in all the WRs that we will need.
