  • Adam Zagoria reports that Kentucky is one of the schools showing serious interest in Mark Lyons from Xavier who avg 15 pts last year. Would be eligible immediately because he graduates this year but RS his freshman year. Could be a big pick up!

The interest is just preliminary right now but I'll have more on this tonight.

  • I believe he was one of the kids involved in the brawl with Cincy wasnt he? Surprises Cal would mess with a kid like this..Well I surely dont know the whole story so I guess we shall see..Tying up a scholly for only one year would be a good thing though and we need guards.

I know his attitude could be a precaution but do you see this going anywhere past interest? Definitely has talent

Yes. Cal has always been about giving kids second chances and usually works wonders with them.

I don't remember the specifics, and I know both teams were jawin throughout the game, but I watvhed that brawl lots of times, and felt as though the Cincy guys instigated everything that occured. I don't condone the retaliation, but at the same time, kids have to take up for themselves. Ultimately, if Cal believes he will be valuable, I'll trust Cal, cause he's earned it.

Don't think Lyons played a huge part in the brawl but he's had his share of problems at X.

  • Mixed emotions on this. A. Everybody deserves a second chance. B. If he earns his degree in 4 years from Xavier in 4 years its obvious the kid isn't an idiot. C. But he certainly said some really stupid stuff after the game with cincy. Bottom line? I trust cal.

  • I am fine with whatever the coaches decide. It sounds like Arizona has the inside track. I would still like to have a guard or two moving through the program who is a multiyear player who has some skill and can help with the transition from year to year and in case of injury.

I think the reason why is because this kid has had some issues with attitude. I think that Cal will get a better feel for him if he visits with him and I assume that his issues with attitude and focus will be brought up in the conversation. I trust Cal to be a good judge of personality. This kid did average 15 ppg and that should at least get Cal to take a look. I am all for second chances and getting your degree in 4 years is no walk in the park and Lyons has shown that he is committed to his education and that, to me, shows he may not be the liability that some think he will be.

  • I am not advocating that fight with UC and X. But I would have more of a problem getting a kid that walked away from helping his team mates in that than one that tried to help out his buddies. That was an all out fight and in that situation you have to protect your own side first. If you have been in that situation you know what I am talking about. If you have ever played some pool in a backroom for some cash you may know what I speak of here. As long as he didnt sucker punch someone at the start of the whole thing he is OK with me. If he was an instigator and blind sided somebody then no one should even talk to him. I think he was one just trying to help his team mates. Kenny Frease could have been killed by that blow he took and didnt see coming. That was sickening and the kid that did that should have been banned from all NCAA contests for life. He must have grown up an Artest fan.

  • Cal has a history of being able to take kids w/attitudes (or reported attitudes) and making them team players and contributors. Anyone remember a guy named Cousins?? Lyons can play and would be a big addition to a position that right now really has only 2 guys, 1 of which is an incoming fresman and unproven. If Cal could get him here, I think it is a very good move.

i don't think we need a shoot first PG, and I am not thinking he will help with us win a NT next year. He isn't what we need, I don't think. He could help, no doubt. However, unless he is the key piece that will provide us with NT, I would rather get player that could provide more stability like....

Torian Graham, who could be part of UK for more than 1 year. He has athleticism already to be part of UK, probably lacks basketball fundamentals. Hopefully his school problem works out.

If that doesn't work. I rather have someone like Hood force to start playing and learning on the rope. Which would be helpful in 2013-14 season.

No big reason, just don't think it's as necessary as people make it out to be. I am already satisfied with this class, adding Bennet will be crucial and amazing. After that, we should be fine.

  • It amuses me how UK fans can be forgiving to a player with a "past" when he's considering transferring to Kentucky. If that same player were going to Louisville or Tennessee, he'd be a "thug" or "loser"...ha...when that same player considers the Cats, they deserve a second chance.

I'm sure every fan does that...plus Calipari's shown he can change attitudes and there's nothing wrong with wanting a better future for a kid.

  • Xavier and Cincy is not like UK and Louisville or UNC and dUKe

They are two teams that really "hate" each other so anyone caught up in that brawl it is understandable.

I agree. I think we're fine where we sit and Bennet would be icing on the cake.

    Good point.

Lyons had his share of problems both on and off the court at X there's no question but he's a guy that is potentially worth the risk. He's a pro.

That said, I'm sure Cal will meet with him and vet him accordingly before taking this thing any further.

  • If the Cats offer and Lyons accepts, he will have to earn any playing time he gets. But the Cats need another guy that can defend at the guard position. Adding Bennett (hopefully) and playing Hood more does not solve THAT problem.

Adding Graham could help there but Lyons is a guy that has played at the major college level and would be able to step in much more easily.

    ukcat15

  • I'm not even sure why it's a discussion. The guy is basically a "no risk" get. We've got the scholarships available. If he pans out, great, if not, kick him off the team. I trust Calipari to make the right decision.

    BlueGhost

  • He would Definetly help...just cause have a short bench and rotation has t hurt us yet doesn't mean it wont eventually...what if harrow gets hurt game 2...we have no point guard or backup for a guard position rest of the season...smart thing to do is try to add Bennett graham and Lyons and for once in cals tenure have a decent bench...Lyons is a 2 who can play point so he would back up barrow and Goodwin and spell both when needed...graham might be another Stacey Poole looks great really athletic but doesn't get it and might never play...hood cant guard the 1 or the 2 and some team he prob can't guard the 3...poythress who most likely will be our 3 would abuse hood if he was on him all game...hood is not the answer
