  • Was gonna post this in the thread about MKG possibly coming back, but I think it warrants its own.

    Every time I read about Poythress, it reminds me of Darius Miller...

    Jack of all trades - good outside shot, good inside game
    Good passer
    TEAM player - doesn't mind deferring but will take over

    For those more familiar with Poythress, am I dreaming that up, or does that comparison hold water?

    Been comparing Poythress to Miller for a long time. Very versatile and has the ability to work the middle of the floor. Can score from all three levels.

  • His high school team was upset last night in the opening round of the regional tournament. He got in foul trouble and would up with 18 points. He had a great season averaging nearly 30 points a game.

    How great would it be for Poythress to be the next 4 year anchor like Miller has been the last 4?

    Obviously, it depends on his progress, etc, but does he seem to be a guy that will be here for a while? That probably will be determined most by his mindset. Is he aggressive offensively, or is he quick to defer like Miller?

    Don't think Poythress is a one and done but not sure he's a 4-year guy either.

    I think part of what hurt Miller is all the talent that Cal brought in around him. Tough for him to contribute consistently with guys like Wall, Cousins, Knight, etc. That put him in defer mode and he's been fighting his way out of that for the last year and a half.

    Now, at least, I think he's starting to develop more of that killer instinct.

    Last year, it was more like a single player making the shot, to win the game. While this year, defensively they work together, and offensively they work together.

    Even Indiana game, we were up till the buzzer. We went down, but came back ahead at Indiana. This team doesn't try to do spectacular plays Like 2010 and 2011. They instead becomes better team.

    Which is amazing really. YOu see that from Senior laden teams, and even senior laden team not to this level, i don't think.

    Or.....he's been the most clutch guy we have on this team. In the last two games nearly all his points have come late in the game when things were tightening up. I think Chris is right, he has developed quite the killer instinct, and deserves credit for it. Let's not over analze things and give credit where it's due. Opposing coaches have gone as far as calling him what holds this team together FWIW.

    Agreed somebody is going to get pretty good value for where he'll be selected which will probably end up in the 2nd round.

  • Poythress is definitely a player I'm definitely looking forward to seeing in UK blue / white. I could see him taking Miller's role, in all honesty, but he won't be a replacement for him, simply because Miller is becoming Mr. Clutch the past couple of games (and all tourney last year, see his MVP performance)

    yeah, Harrelson and Liggins both taken near the end of the 2nd round. Harrelson was really getting minutes for the Knicks and had some double doubles. Liggins is working on getting into the rotation at his club himself. Not sure where he ended up, thought it was Orlando??

  • Poythress is a freak athletically and with him being up to about 225 when he played in Lexington in December, he's just going to be a force of nature.

  • Miller had a lot of pressure placed on him by the Kentucky faithful. There are many top 50 players that don't average 20 ppg over their careers and can still be said to have had solid careers. I place him on that list. He was never a kid that would carry a team.

    Poythress seems like a different player altogether. I bet he's closer to a PPatterson type player than Miller.

  • If UK wins the title I will be surprised if Miller isn't one of the most important guys on the team during that run. He was excellent during the post season last year.

    Miller will be huge come tourney time. People are quick to label this team as "inexperienced" but tend to forget this team has 3 players that played significant minutes in the Final 4 last year.

While there are some Miller similarities I can see, I don't think the Cats have had anyone truly in his mold of size/athleticism and the skill set in many, many years. There's a little bit of Mash in there, IMO. Less perimeter skill, perhaps, but more bounce.

  • Poythress is freakishly explosive. I've seen him play 3 times this year. He truly plays above the rim.
