Projecting Success

Nobody knows better than the Kentucky Wildcats how challenging it is to recruit and sign ready-made SEC defensive linemen. Enter players like Collins Ukwu.

  • Would love to see Ukwu follow through on all of his hard work and have a huge, huge year. UK's DL could really use a dominant edge rusher.

  • We had a run of great linemen there for a while. Sweet Pea (in spite of his injury plagued senior year), Pryor, Jarmon, Peters... Those 4 would make a pretty good NFL line. We also got good play out of Dominic Lewis (?) for a year, Johnny Williams and Jenkins all at end. To take the next step we have to get DL play like that. Last year was just a huge regression along the line. I like our top 3 tackles going into the season and DE may be better than expected with Ukwu, Ridge Wilson at the hybrid and possibly Wells. Can't wait for kickoff in 2 weeks!

The key is getting 4-5 of them on the same team together. UK has had some nice ones, but too sporadic.

  • Minter is 100 percent correct and I've said that before: You're not going to beat the big boys enough on the recruiting trail to be successful going down that path. UK's bread is still going to be buttered on talent evaluation, something they were great at during the Brooks era.

  • We will likely never recruit the "ready-to-go" guys. I agree that we'll have to make a living off of "farming" the players. Next yr Ukwu finally has size and playing experience. Wyndham won't be asked to play straight up against an SEC tackle.

Minter's new system alone will bring about an increase in production. Our DE's will be a nice surprise, I think. We have depth, we have talent. The DT's will be the wildcard this yr. I still expect them to be improved over last yr (but how much?), but the depth is still lacking.
