QB injury creates no-win situation

The Kentucky coaching staff made the decision to not put quarterback Maxwell Smith at further risk of injury against Florida, but it also left the Cats short in 'The Swamp'.

  • I'm sorry, but if it has been the intent all the time to make Whitlow the #2 then he should have been ready to go in. This is on the coaches! No way around it! IMO!

Can't think of one, single reason as to why Joker left Morgan Newton in the game as long as he did and didn't have some type of contingency plan for Smith not being able to go today.

This team just seems ill-prepared in so many ways. That has to fall on the staff.

Sigh. Agree with^^^. Sad to say..but I think we should have put Whitlow in to start..and run an offense like the option based attack we used to beat Tenn last year. Kudos to the O-Line, they blocked well..there wasnt much pressure on Newton..kid just cant throw a birthday party..way overthrows short passes then throws at the feet of a wr 15 yrds downfield. I really think the defense should be applauded. Forced 2 3 and outs..a pick..several tfl's and then ran out of steam as Newton couldnt muster any drives.
Had Max Smith been behind center..I really think we would have pulled an upset..but we will never know now will we?
Gotta put this one firmly on the staff..we had 3 true frosh corners out there and really played well..Quinn looked pretty good. I hate this..we ARE super young..but its getting worse and worse. This team could do big things next year..and for the next few seasons. But i dont see Joker making it into 2013. The good news is this team has young talent that can fit just about any scheme, if a new HC takes the reins..Smith is a very good QB, and you have Whitlow and Towles for a run/pass spread attack.

  • It didn't matter if Whitlow would have started this game, he wouldn't have given UK a chance to win either. Whitlow is just not ready right now; how many true freshman QBs are ready?. This year, if Maxwell doesn't play, UK cannot consistently move the ball through the air. It is that simple.

How can you presume this? That same WAS said about Max Smth last year (i.e. OL is so bad, WR are so bad..it isn't all Newton's fault) and look what Max did when he got the ball?

Whitlow probably isn't the greatest passer in the world, but I'd bet the kid can move the ball with his feet and he can hit John George with a 4 yard route out of backfield (vs. Newton throw it behind and high for int) or hit a wide open Collins for TD (vs. throw is 8 yard over his head), or hit a slant hit guys close to chest (vs. at ankles, etc).

And finally, that silly quote by Morgan Newton was so typical of his whole career. His sulky demeanor, yelling at Sanders on side lines, etc..the kid not only sucks balls as a QB but is a immature person and not a leader of anyone. For those that wonder what I'm talkign about here it is by your one and only MOrgan Newton.

“I never really got in much of a rhythm, just out of sync. … I just tried to be there for my team and the situation didn’t work out very well. … It’s tough. Over my career, it seems like it’s (always) inopportune. Bad timing. Bad situations. Bad circumstances. You know, post-Randall Cobb, post-Chris Matthews, but pre-(DeMarcus) Sweat, pre-Demarco (Robinson) and all these other guys. It’s just been tough and it makes me look like a much worse player than I really am, but that’s kind of how life goes.”

I saw enough to see that Whitlow's passing accuracy would be a huge upgrade from Newton's. I'd rather risk INT's & wrong plays due to not properly reading D's than knowing before the release that the pass won't be near the receiver. Why not let him learn vs. known Ground Hog Day performances?

  • Forget whitlow, they should have played towles. If he is as good as we think he is, he could start the rest of the year possibly. It wouldn't be unheard to unseat smith, he's not elway. And why not have him ready next year instead if learning on the job then? Every coach keeps acting like next year, blah blah blah....start putting the best players on the field now, at least lose bc your young, that's respectable

  • If Joker thinks that Newton gives UK the best chance to win thats fine. I'm not at practice so I can't really disagree. But here is my problem. If Newton is the backup QB then he needs to practice at the position.

  • Newton is not a SEC QB and no matter how much lipstick you put on that pig it is still going to be the same old oinker.

No one has said as such.

  • The error in evaluating and using Newton has been the defining moment in Phillips' tenure as HC. Couple that with the failure in roster management by having no other QB's with or behind Newton for two years and you have the current mess. If Max Smith had not fallen into their lap as basically an unrecruited prospect who found them and then agreed to gray shirt we would be relying on a red shirt or true freshman behind Newton now.

I usually don't buy all of the points/perspectives from "sports" writers. After watching UK first 4 games I thought Bozich got it pretty much right in his commentary (look on WDRB website). If the spirit moves you or any other "blue" fans I encourage to take a read. There was more to that loss than just Newton playing as long as he did. It's so sad to watch our team (be it young or old) not compete (except in 2007) with the big boys----even when the big boys, i.e., Florida are not world beaters. I don't believe Florida is anything close to what they were a few years ago. Do they have some athletes? Hell yes. When the coach(es) know about the injury to your starting qb and your back-up quarter qb---be it Newton or Whitlow or Jlow---doesn't get some real coaching and reps during practice something is missing in the leadership role of coaches. It's so sad because "D" was giving our offense a chance for awhile. Yes we took a bunch of "pups" into the big bad swamp. And that's a factor to consider. But come on Joker and staff we keep hearing the same things---not lined up right; missing receivers, ...........................................
I at a loss as a fan. Go Blue give us some hope.
