  • Good story Darrell. When is the first day of practice

  • Guess that means no redshirt if he doesnt win the QB job. Hope he finds a role and can help us.

Why would they redshirt him? If he is completely healthy I don't see the point. If he doesn't get the starting job this year there is no way he would get it next year. His best option for this year is putting him in the wildcat formation.

  • Wonder if he can catch the ball? Maybe working in as a flexed TE would be a good thing?

    Clever stuff here.

Put both Newton and Whitlow in the backfield. Either could play qb with other going out for pass or either could run the option (to the other).

  • Morgan would be a good fit at tight end IMO. Kind of like what Tebow will do for the jets?

  • Tight End or some kind of slot WR. I don't think he would do much in the backfield, as we have too many legitimate threats back there to take away from by putting someone with his lack of speed back there. I always hate the idea of putting him in a wildcat or end around pass play because it is just taking a pass attempt from our starter, and giving it to the backup when the starter is perfectly healthy, lol.. Just my opinion. But, I could see him catching some passes, he definitely is tough as nails, and has taken plenty of punishment as a QB here, so it would not be a tough transition assuming he has decent hands. I hope he stays involved, bc I don't think he is winning the job this year, but he is a great kid!!!!

  • I do think Morgan Newton can make some plays with the ball in his hands but has never shown himself to be a pure passer so I agree with what Randy Sanders is saying.

He has nice top end speed once he gets going and his tough to bring down. Too good of an athlete to be holding a clipboard all season. Plus, all indications are he's gotten himself in great shape as well.

I agree with this assessment. Newton is a good athlete, just not a good QB. He can fit in somewhere on the field doing something. I just hope we do not have to see him lining up under center for us anymore for 2 reasons: 1)no matter what they say about his recovery from the surgery, he will not be 100% ready to play QB for us, not this soon after surgery, and 2)based on past experience with him at QB, Newton IS NOT the answer.
I wish him well his senior season and hope he can contribute something tangible to the program.

  • Awesome. As said the kid has some size so he could probably serve well not just in moving the ball in that Wildcat position but blocking as well (could be really beneficial there depending on how the line fills out). Good to have that additional wrinkle offensively as well.

I think most will say when he's successful we're successful. I look forward to seeing him in this capacity.

No. Not quick enough. Hasn't shown good decision making either.

    vhcat1970

  • I don't see playing him at TE simply because of his shoulder. Perhaps slot WR?

You beat me to it. I don't want to see Newton in the Wildcat. Designed runs for this guy have been a nightmare. Newton is nowhere close to being able to do what Cobb did in the Wildcat.

  • Just the fact that Sanders seems to be thinking outside the box a little gives me hope.

  • I think I'd like him best as a short yardage Wildcat option.

  • IIRC he had a huge reception at Vandy a couple of years back. Derrick Locke threw the pass

  • The problem I have with putting Newton at another position is whose place is he going to take if he gets on the field? Is he a better TE than T.Robinson or Shields? I don't think so, not this quickly. Same at WR, is he better than D.Robinson, Collins, or either of the freshmen? That's not even counting his fellow seniors at WR.

I just don't see Morgan making the transition to a new position over the course of fall camp and being better than players who we already have there. Also the guys he would likely replace would be young players, and frankly I would rather give them the snaps and let them develop and get some experience for the future. JMO

Agreed but we could come up with some special packages for him to run and they could be effective in the right situations.

  • He has decent top end speed when he gets up a head of steam but he is not quick and takes time to accelerate. He is easy to manage out of the backfield and as a freshman the defenses just covered up receivers and let him run. That allowed the LB's to control him. He runs upright like a TE and has no wiggle. I have no idea what to do with him but he is not suited to be either a running or throwing QB at this level to my eye. I think he could have been a good TE or H back if they had worked on his flexibility and cutting a lot. At this point in his career I don't know where he fits in.

There has yet to be a package implimented (with him in the backfield) that proven to be effective.

Sorry, love the kid. Love his dedication and spirit. BUT, he doesn't have the speed to make the edge. Rarely throws a "catchable" ball, especially when on the move (which would likely be the case from the wildcat).

He is a world-class athlete. There should be someplace we could gainfully employ that talent. I just don't see that spot directly behind center.
